Thank you Arthur for putting this excellent video together. I have been sewing all my life and occasionally tackling an upholstery project on my trusty little Kenmore. So my mother gave me a Mercury industrial machine to help make the tasks easier. Unfortunately, the machine was so intimidating that after I set it up it has been sitting in the same corner of my sewing room collecting dust for 10 years. My husband finally said that he would take it to the second hand store if I couldn't figure out how to use it. Your instructions were precise with the reasoning behind the functions which helped me understand the process. I spent the morning with your video and am now actually sewing with the Mercury. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and your reassuring manner to give me confidence. I'm keeping the Mercury and using it! I will look for more videos you have posted. Your happy student, Helen

Well Arthur, it's been a little over a year since I first watched your video and now I own two industrial sewing machines of my own. I bought the compound feed walking foot last year, and I just purchased a straight-stitch/zig-zag industrial machine. Your video title made me curious, but watching the whole video changed my life. People can't believe that I'm now making bookbags, purses, duffelbags, wallets, tarps etc.... Without your video, I wouldn't have been curious to this whole industry. So thank you for changing my life and opening a whole new world to me. It's been very frustrating at times, but when you walk away with a completed product, it's one of the most gratifying feelings. Thanks again Arthur, you're a good man, and you changed my life.

This is a wonderful video for people who have purchased second hand machines from owners who are less than knowledgable, and a great refresher for people who are going back to their industrials after a while of not using them, so thank you :) Also, to answer your question, the reason why these machines are threaded left to right is because the chassis that holds the bobbin case has a hook, and this takes the thread from the top needle and carries it under the bobbin case, thus creating a loop. The machine arm then pulls the top thread up, from under the needle plate, and it's at this point that tension issues occur. (For example, if the tension is too low, the disks will not grab the thread strongly enough, so that when the arm pulls up, it pulls thread mainly from the bobbin. This leaves a lot of thread still trapped inside the bobbin housing, thus creating birds nest, or eventual needle break. It's the same but in reverse for the bobbin tension, as both tension disks need to be set to about the same in most cases, however sticky materials such as leather or PVC add a minute amount of "tension" in that the thread is harder to pull through them, thus, the tension disks need to be increased to compensate. The reverse for thin fabrics such as thin silk or chiffon.) But basically, how you insert the bobbin case, is the same direction as you should insert the thread. For domestic machines, it's front to back, for industrial machines, it's left to right. And the reason why it's pretty much always left to right is that on the right side of the needle there's the arm of the machine, on the left side there's open space, thus it's logical to place something that can sometimes be difficult to handle in the area with little interference. (Though some industrial machines do have bobbin chassis that are on the left of the needle, or behind the needle or in front of the needle, so they will need to be threaded from that direction first)

Actually I'm too cheap to take my machines to get serviced. A machine service usually consists of the machine being opened up, cleaned, re-oiled, and then fixed back together. When I sent my first machine, a domestic Brother, to be serviced, the gentleman informed me "Your bottom tension was set to 0 so I adjusted it" and I felt my face drop, as on a drop feed domestic machine, the stitch tension is completely controlled by the upper tension dial. So I couldn't sew zig-zag stitches anymore as the bottom tension pulled the stitches like a corset. I vowed never to take my machines to be serviced again. And I've learned to clean them, strip clean them, fix timing issues, fix computer issues, fix motor issues, on both domestic and industrial machines and overlockers, simply because I didn't trust a guy that charged me £60 and then broke my machine. "I'm not paying some guy that doesn't know what he's doing when I can not know what I'm doing all by myself for free" But now I have a better idea what I'm doing. Perhaps a better step would have been choosing someone certified to repair my machine, but hey, I was young and inexperienced. (it still strange when I look at my manicured hands covered in black grease because I've been fiddling with a clutch motor, but I do my own nails too so it just gives me an excuse to repaint them) But, I'm glad I could help. If you know how that mysterious void under your machine works, you have a better idea what's going on when you're using it. If your thread falls behind the bobbin chassis then you have a better idea where to look. (Though obviously only open your machine up when you don't have anything to loose. I opened a £120 machine up after paying £60 for a service that was apparently required, so I had 'nothing to loose', probably don't do that on a £4k - £10k machine unless it's completely irreparably broken and you're wanting to learn why.)

I enjoy reading your comments you shared with Mr. Porter. I have been doing my nails for years. I am an army reserves veteran and your comment had me thinking. Since I was able to take apart a M- 16, clean and oil it, put it back together and pass inspection among other things for ten years, I know I have the capabilities to clean my two vintage machines because I am tired of paying these high price companies to repair my machine. You gave me inspiration. I have an old 100 year old vintage machine I never used. It's heavy and I've had it since being 14 years old. I guess it's time for me to use it especially after reading this article about a designer that makes expensive denim on a machine similar to mine. I am saving money to purchase an consequences industrial machine and half way there.

Hi Arthur, I started using sewing machines back when I was just a boy watching my mother sew. As I got older I would troubleshoot my mom's machine problems for her. I grew into a huge guy 6ft 3in tall and would still enjoy sewing when necessary. My guy friends found it funny but their wives and mothers had sewing questions for me to help them. Another pastime I had was welding up rusted cars and painting them. People asked how I knew how to sew, so I told them the principle was basically the same as welding new sections of sheet metal together. The difference is sewing the sections together with a sewing machine instead of welding them... By the way, thank you for the knowledge you gave me and I will pass it on..

I have always wanted to become a fashion designer; I made clothes for my teddy bears! Unfortunately, when it came time for me to go out into the world, I chose to go to a university and majored in Speech/Communications. I graduated, and I was a server and bartender. I then went back to school, and got another degree in English Education. So, I am 38 years-old, and I do love my job as an English teacher. However, I believe the dream(s) you have as a child and young adult are always with you...you cannot suppress that dream. Five years ago, I volunteered at a charitable thrift store for a summer, where I learned how to eBay and make money. After that summer, I struck out on my own. I started going to every thrift store in a twenty-five mile range collecting handbags and women's dresses. I learned a tremendous amount of knowledge about handbags; I learned every style, label, brand, designer, material, hardware, and more--down to the stitch! I finally gave up, and I sold the rest of my lot of handbags (Over 400) to one person. I was done! Now, I that dream I had years ago that I have quelled for so long is eating me up. I have no I idea where to start to design and make a (Preferably leather) handbag? Sincerely, J.Robson Koenig

Hello James, Thank you for watching our videos and for contacting me, I truly understand your story, when I was 15 years old I feel in love with fashion, I had this deep passion for designing, at 16 my girlfriend brother in-law was a Master Tailor and her wanted to teach me how to be a Tailor, I turn it down, because I did not wont my friends to know that I was learning to sew, I did not have real JOY in my life until I turn 42, that is when I learn to sew and started to do what GOD had put in me at birth, one of the hardest thing to do is to start, this what I have learn to do, when ever I wanted to start something, I would just start, making hand bag are not hard, you get you a machine and start making small products, you will start making larger products, GO FOR IT, YOU WILL ONLY LIVE THIS LIFE ONCE. Arthur

Dear Arthur, Thank you for listening to me. My friends and family do not know about my dream to become a fashion/handbag designer. And, if I did tell them, they would just laugh it off anyway. Your words to me were very inspiring! Honestly, I am a little scared to try and make a small leather piece, because I am scared of failure; I am scared I do not have the skills and talent to do this. However, I have to try because I do not want to have any regrets in my life! Can I just use any type of sewing machine with a specific needle? Should I go to one of the many thrift stores and buy an inexpensive/cheap bag and deconstruct it and try to put it back together? Eventually, I would like to make my designs/patterns! I do not know where to start!? Again, thank you so much for taking the time to listen to me and write back!! Sincerely, Rob

After watching the video, I came to the conclusion that I have to get one that I have complete control over. My other machines are treadle machines. I now have a 1883 singer improved manufacture. I got it for 200 CDN and it sews great. Had to take paint off the machine, but they painted it with oil on the base of the cast, so it was easy. The table is original and damaged a bit, but I can fix that. I had no problem going from the home version to the industrial version in the way of control. For the slow precise stitching, I can put my finger in the spokes and seems even easier than a motor type or hand crank. All I need to get now is a roller foot. Thank you immensely for the tips.

Mr Arthur, Thank you sooooooooooo much for putting in the time and effort for this instructional video. I bought a Juki industrial machine and when I first used it, it freaked me out how fast this thing was. Every time I used it (6X), it scared the living daylights out of me. I ran across some stitching problems but your instruction about threading helped me figure it out. I am excited about reacquainted myself with this purchase. Keep up the good work!

Arthur, thank you for making such an informative tutorial, I have been sewing for about 40 years and will be picking up my Industrial machine tomorrow, One thing you taught me was how to thread the machine even though the threading is similar to most domestic machines ,there are some very major differences when you showed how to use the foot pedal it reminded me not only of an accelerator in a car { I think for this reason it will always stay in peoples minds } also because of the similarities of my much loved and used singer treadle machine I enjoyed your hand wheel turning which most people seem to forget and most of all for passing on your knowledge to help others something many people are afraid to do your a great teacher , one I wished I would have had many years ago Thank you

Wow this is incredibly helpful. George Brown College requires you to know how to use an industrial sewing machine and i had no idea what it was and how it was different from my own sewing machine, but this helped so much. Saved me $400 from taking an introductory course in August!

Great video Mr. Porter. I was given my industrial machine as a gift and it is very old, but I'm so excited to use it. My husband has been helping me try to figure it out but when I ran across your video I was elated to hear all of your knowledge on how to use my machine. My machine is a Chandler but is very similar to the one on your video. Thanks so very much for teaching so many things I needed to know on your video. If there is any way possible I'd like to know if you can help me find the manual for my machine because I've been searching on the internet but haven't found anything. I've subscribed to your channel and am excited to see any other videos you have. I'll certainly pass it on!!! May The LORD bless you even more.

Thank You Arthur for a wonderful video. I have always tried to pass on things I have learned but some times it gets difficult when you are on "Auto Pilot" you tend to skip explaining steps you do not think about. You have done a wonderful job in getting into that void and with a great ease of understanding. Understanding how the machine works is essential to being able to sew without constant frustration. Tension in particular can be daunting. I recommend your videos to anyone who is interested in sewing on an industrial machine with fabrics they might be afraid of. Your patient's with your instruction is an admirable gift.

Thanks for your videos Master Porter, I learned the hard way how to thread my juki du-1181 by messing up a whole bunch of material, but, I learned from it. Your videos really helped me fine tune a lot of what I had learned, I really appreciate you sharing your knowledge. I'm about to upgrade to a Juki 1541 as I learn to upholster auto seats and interiors and whatever else family and friends ask for my help with, I love this hobby and the things I'm able to create. I hope my children show as much interest as I have and I can show them how to sew, I learned the basics from my grandfather, I only wish I had paid more attention back then. God bless sir

Hello TheBitterBeard, Thank you for your BLESSING and for watching our videos, I use to watch my grandmother sew when I was a kid, when I was 13 years old, my girlfriend brother in law was a master tailor, her wanted to teach me, I did not receive what he was trying to give me, that was a lesson that I tell young people this story all the time, when someone is trying to teach you something, receive it, I have 2 sons, they do not want to do what I do, so I know how you feel. Arthur you are so good at how you do it with the tutorial so easy to follow you. I have had a Mitsubishi Industrial sewing Machine Model Dy-349-Z looks similar to yours your GLACO nearly every thing about your is almost same but I use it first few time I got it but since then I started having problems with the tension and since then never looked back alt at just packed in my basement so far I have ended up wit 4 sewing machines but I do love this Mitsubishi so much. But since I watched your tutorial I have got interested again and want to learn more from you please because I can tell you're good at explaining.

Arthur Porter Hello this video is very helpful. i have another issue. I have a single needle Juki. The needle keeps breaking the thread. I can actually hear it pop only after sewing about an inch if that. I have doubled checked threading, bur on needle, changed the needle for a brand new one After 1" of sewing , the needle breaks the thread. Can you help and tell me what can possibly be causing this? I will really appreciate this. thank you Yoli
