Bento is a work of love. As many Asians typically don't say "I love you!", but show it by cooking, Japanese show their love to their children by making Bento boxes.

If I recall correctly it's a fairly new thing. A manga artist's wife made them for him, so he added them to his manga. The manga was about how this big tough guy salary man really loved to cook and made fancy meals but he attributed the cooking to his wife.

What an easy alternative to making onigiri or maki for bentos. We put panko breaded tilapia, spicy cucumbers and kewpie mayo in ours and it was ALMOST as good as a katsu sando... Now my kids want to try all the flavors.
