I think its important to note the sellers description when you purchase safety eyes. I had a seller who claimed my eyes were 6mm, but they were reslly 10mm and the shaft (or screw) is what they measured for the 6mm.

I use my Susan Bates measuring tool for everything. If the safety eye does not pass clear thru the hole but the next hole is too big I go with the smaller sized hole measurement. Some of these safety eyes you order on Amazon or Etsy are made in other countries and their measurements are slightly off. No biggy. If the pattern calls for 8mm the one that is closest to 8 without going over is your best bet. And p.s. Those wooden ball insert tools going for $10+ on Etsy and Amazon dont work so dont waste your money.
