Thank you so much 🙏🏽 after the last couple years and recovering from long COVID chronic fatigue and inflammation I’m at a place I have to relearn! all these things I had picked up and intuitively discovered over the years. It’s genuinely a service you are doing here on KZbin reaching people everywhere when I think a lot of us who are inclined to want this practice aren’t going to find it outwardly (out worldly ;) easily. It’s great to know now that in counting it is with in and out because I naturally wanted to do it that way and it was a distraction thinking that each count should be a whole breath … also I’ve never heard of the tongue on but that’s actually amazing- I have an extra tooth in my front and it does create extra tension, I think intuitively at times I have eased it but now consciously I’ll know better to incorporate that. Thank you 🙏🏽 and blessings ☀️

Thank you for your appreciation, Juliana. I'm glad you noticed that I am creating a safe community for people who are serious about Eastern spirituality. Besides, replying to immature comments is pointless considering I don't know them and trolls are just looking to bait people into an argument. The whole troll thing is weird. We wouldn't say negative things to strangers on the street, so why people do it while they hide behind their screen is a sure sign of true insanity. Yep learn your senses and learn to focus then. You can meditate. To learn how to focus pick a small object and twice a day for 30 min only let that object be in your mind hold it in front of you and only picture that thing. Go into it rotate it make it bigger and smaller in your mind but stay focused.

Hi, I just found your channel recently and I'm so happy I did, because your videos are fantastic and the information that you share here is pure gold. Thank you!!! Do you have any suggestions on how to come out of meditation in a gentle way? Usually I'm pressed by time and can't meditate for more than 1 hour at a time, but having an alarm clock (though with a slow sound) to bring me out of the meditation state is a bit too intense for me and often the thought of it makes it difficult for me to go into a deeper state. Hope that makes sense...

It is not irrelevant my friend. It all depends on what tradition. In Zen it is best to gaze at the tip of the nose.

Thank you very much for this, blessings and love from Russia ❤️ may i ask you for suggestions for people who cannot naturally breathe through their nose ? by now i kind of adapted to not let this thought disturb me..but it still feels like i cannot dive deeper into the meditative state because of this.

Thank you Jason, this is a very helpful and clarifying video on meditation here! I have a question though and maybe you or someone else can help me here. I agree with you in meditating in the morning for at that time I have a more blissful, pleasant and peaceful feeling while meditating. Actually though I usually don´t meditate first thing in the morning but rather after 1h of swimming, running or studying, because I often still feel quite tired directly after waking up and when I try to meditate then anyway I almost always find myself drifting of to sleep, not feeling how I normally feel while meditating. I figured it has something to do with my sleep because I guess you are supposed to feel fresh and awake after a good 8h of sleep. I also tried eating earlier in the evening with 5h until I go to bed, but it didn´t really help. Did anyone experience the same or has some advice for me? Thanks a lot!
@johncopobano Жыл бұрын
I like to meditate after 30 minutes of sun salutation yoga first thing in the morning. It wakes my body up, but I try to keep my mind present in the body the whole time. I think as long as you aren't using the exercise as a time to let the mind wander all over the place then it's perfectly fine.

Great to hear from you Alexandre. You should obverse all mental activity, but it is important to try and remain as the witness and watch the mental activity like a cloud in a clear blue sky.

Yes, solitude is still best. Both the extrovert and introvert have to apply themselves to meditation. Meditation does not bend to suit our temperaments. It is a perfect technology for all.

I will address only the first five minutes or so of the video . the following will cover mantra meditation only - 1- Thoughts are NOT a distraction nor should there be any attempt to remove them . Thoughts are a natural function of the physiology and appear effortlessly. 2- A mantra is a thought whose meaning should NOT be known or inquired about and can be experienced as effortlessly as any other thoughts . Effortless being the key word here. 3- use of the mantra - the mantra should be thought as effortlessly as any other thought . Concentration or contemplation should be avoided . As stated in the video the main purpose of meditation is to minimize mental activity , no matter how subtle , ending in a state of no mantra , no thoughts . If one concentrates on the mantra it fixes the mind on what ever level of consciousness is present, preventing the possibility of realizing the source of thinking , that being consciousness awake to itself. a state of full awareness but no mental activity . Contemplation- contemplation or in this case knowing the meaning of the mantra will also create enough mental activity to prevent transcending the thought process. So how does one think the mantra effortlessly ? sit down , close the eyes wait for a minute or less and begin to think the mantra as effortlessly as we would any other thoughts .the effortless aspect is triggered by the initial intention prior to meditation of " i'm now going to begin my meditation . this does not have to be a conscious thought as when one sits and closes the eyes the intention is inherent in that process . Then when one notices that the mantra is not present , reintroduce it once and let it go . as the meditation progresses the amount of times one becomes aware that they are not thinking the mantra will decrease and pure awareness will increase , even though pure awareness doesn't increase or decrease , it just appears as that is what is happening . This is a simplified version . It's important to find a teacher that can make subtle corrections while learning because the tendency to try or make an effort is heavily ingrained in most people.

People don’t know how hard it really is to meditate
@shamanoturdiculous3 жыл бұрын
Overall, a very nice video.. My only problem was with the definition of Samadhi. Samadhi is becoming one with the object of meditation. It's not always blissful, it depends on the object of meditation. This is why it's important to know what you are concentrating on. Samadhi with God, the infinite universe, the logos, the prima materia, Om, the philosopher stone, the universe breathing for you, will all give bliss and higher states of awareness. Samadhi with deities can bring some pretty nasty stuff. Some do Samadhi for the purposes of power, which will cause spiritual heaviness.

Jason, I don't mind listening to a video on how to meditate. But to tell us that one way is the proper way or the ultimate way is hyperbole. There are many different ways to meditate from vipassana, shikantaza, Goenka, the Myanmar Sayadaws, and so on. I just finished reading a chapter in D.T. Suzuki's "Selected Works: Volume 1" on the differences between Dogen, Bankei, and Hakuin. Meditation is not complicated and there many different methods that work.
@JasonGregoryAuthor4 жыл бұрын
Keith I didn't say other methods were not authentic or the ultimate way is hyperbole. I would refrain from putting words in other people's mouth. I could have mentioned numerous methods as I stated, but I gave just some that are easy to follow and implement in one's life. And yes, meditation is not complicated, I'm not sure why you mentioned that. My video explains the simplicity of meditation. Again, please refrain from putting words in my mouth. I am only saying that to you because you usually contribute to the comment section in a nonemotional manner. But keep in mind that I am trying to create a community here that is serious about what I am talking about. I usually don't respond to triggered emotional responses, but since you are a friend I have. Hope you appreciate that. My channel as you may have noticed is for an intelligent and mature dialogue about the great traditions. It's not your stereotypical KZbin channel where trolling is accepted. Have a great day and hope my response makes sense.
@McLKeith4 жыл бұрын
Jason Gregory Jason, I should have put a comma after "the ultimate way" before "hyperbole" to prevent misunderstanding. It is I who is saying your title is hyperbole. I am not say you said "the ultimate way is hyperbole." What I am questioning is your title "How to Meditate Properly: The Ultimate Guide to Meditation" is a bit over and beyond its scope. Nonetheless, it is a good video and I know you mean well.

WHAT IS SPECIAL ABOUT BEING A HINDU? By Francois Gautier. Diversity in Divinity and Unity in Spirituality. 1) Believe in God ! - Aastik - Accepted 2) Don't believe in God ! - You're accepted as Nastik 3) You want to worship idols - please go ahead. You are a murti pujak. 4) You dont want to worship idols - no problem. You can focus on Nirguna Brahman. 5) You want to criticise something in our religion. Come forward. We are logical. Nyaya, Tarka etc. are core Hindu schools. 6) You want to accept beliefs as it is. Most welcome. Please go ahead with it. 7) You want to start your journey by reading Bhagvad Gita - Sure ! 8) You want to start your journey by reading Upanishads - Go ahead. 9) You want to start your journey by reading Purana - Be my guest. 10) You just don't like reading Puranas or other books. No problem my dear. Go by Bhakti tradition . ( bhakti- devotion) 11) You don't like idea of Bhakti ! No problem. Do your Karma. Be a karmayogi. 12) You want to enjoy life. Very good. No problem at all. This is Charvaka Philosophy. 13) You want to abstain from all the enjoyment of life & find God - jai ho ! Be a Sadhu, an ascetic ! 14) You don't like the concept of God. You believe in Nature only - Welcome. (Trees are our friends and Prakriti or nature is worthy of worship). 15) You believe in one God or Supreme Energy. Superb! There are multiple festivals every single day of the year. 21) You are a working person. Don't have time for religion. Its okay. You will still be a Hindu. 22) You like to go to temples. Devotion is loved. 23) You don't like to go to temples - no problem. You are still a Hindu! 24) You know that Hinduism ☺ is a way of life, with considerable freedom. 25) You believe that everything has God in it. So you worship your mother, father, guru, tree, River, Prani-matra, Earth, Universe! 26) And If you don't believe that everything has GOD in it - No problems. Respect your viewpoint. 27) "Sarve jana sukhino bhavantu " (May you all live happily) You represent this! You're free to choose, my dear Hindu! This is exactly the essence of Hinduism, all inclusive .. That is why it has withstood the test of time inspite of repeated onslaught both from within and outside, and assimilated every good aspects from everything . That is why it is eternal !!! There is a saying in Rigveda , the first book ever known to mankind which depicts the Hinduism philosophy in a Nutshell -" Ano bhadrah Krathavo Yanthu Vishwathah"- Let the knowledge come to us from every direction "

This is a great video, I just have a comment about the sleeping tongue technique. I don't think this is a good idea. Your tongue should naturally press at the top of your mouth to support your face. If it doesn't you'll get teeth issues and growth issues in your face. The tongue pressing against the roof of our mouth is what we did naturally in the past when we had tougher diets and stronger jaw muscles. Look up Dr. Michael Mew's research on this if you are interested. I've also seen Zen teachers mention that the tongue should be at the roof of your mouth before. Other than that great video, thanks a lot!
@JasonGregoryAuthor3 жыл бұрын
Thank you my friend. Actually, most Zen teachers recommend sleeping tongue technique. I know a lot of people on youtube try to challenge me without knowing my background, but I'm not new to this and I teach the traditional knowledge. As for teeth and growth issues, no damage will obviously happen during a brief meditation practice. I thought that comment was quite odd. You are not practicing it for every waking hour. Also, you may want to actually look at the actual medical research on how much impact your tongue has on facial structure and cheekbones.
