Some of the most powerful tools we have to feel balanced and happy are rooted in some of the most simple principles. Meditation can be a powerful tool for calming an active mind and becoming present. When I learned how to meditate years ago it profoundly changed how I thought and allowed me to focus in a new way. I felt compelled to share the exact mediation I have done everyday for the past 4 years now. It's the first 20 mins of my day and the last 20 mins of my day and the feeling it gives can become addicting (in a good way) . Ultimately it's the meditation that has allowed me to let go of taking Adderall (given for ADHD) and balance myself out naturally. The power is within and meditation is a powerful tool to bring that power to life.

I have been meditating every day for 3 years now, for 20 minutes minimum ... It was either that or another burnout, the choice was easy to make. One trick that I have learned that calms the mind is to relax the tongue. With thoughts come micro-movements of the tongue and when the tongue is relaxed, less thoughts are produced. Thanks for being you. So inspiring! Lots of love to you too!.

Hello Aaron, I just wanted to let you know that you have changed my life. On July 30th, I decided to stop taking Adderall cold turkey and I haven't looked back since. Had you not made these videos, I wouldn't have known it was possible fix my attention problem at the core, rather than masking it with medication. After I stopped taking Adderall, I started meditating vigorously, and I've found parts of myself that I forgot were there. Without your posts, I would still be unhappy, still have problems with appetite, and still scared of social interaction. You've been a catalyst in my self-improvement campaign, and for that I am forever thankful. Anyways, I'd love to get in touch and talk more about our respective journeys. I followed you on Twitter, but if there is another method of contact that you prefer please let me know! Thank you so much, keep doing what you're doing, Gavin (:

Yes, saghibiya. He tells us that the "gap" between the thoughts expands gradually as we steadily observe/listen. And as the gap increases gradually, then those moments of silence are the ones in which one becomes more alert. : ]

Showing people with ADHD how to meditate is crucial so, thank you for taking the time. Aside from the length, (most people with ADHD will tune out after minute 5 of you still leading up to the topic itself) my only concern is using words like “cure” when referring to a cognitive disorder often concurrent with mental health disorders. I’m of the opinion that if you’re going to talk about ADHD (to the ADHD community or neurotypical folks alike) you should be mindful of terminology and language that promotes misconceptions by way of misinformation. It’s damaging. The last thing ADHD needs is MORE misinformation being passed off as fact. Especially considering most people struggle with ADHD enough without the promotion of bad or misleading information. I hope to try and watch this all the way through at some point and consider it a beneficial resource.

This is Trataka. It's a yogic Dharana (concentration) practice of candle gazing, and he's doing a type of body scan technique for Pratyahara (sensory withdrawal) simultaneously. The listening aspect also has a semblance of Pratyahara. All of these combined can definitely take care of mild to moderate cases of ADHD because their aim is to naturally make the mind one-pointed, but they require consistency and sufficient practice time. More severe cases may require Asana and Pranayama in preparation for the subtler techniques.
@mellang2817
@mellang2817 4 жыл бұрын
Let'sDoMath I am not sure what you mean or are implying by saying “take care” of ADHD. Minimizing/managing symptoms is one thing; Ive learned this is possible through mindfulness and meditation since I left my comment. It is still not a cure. I appreciate you sharing your knowledge and expanding on this practice. Know that I was not commenting on the purpose or efficacy of meditation, in any form. Simply, its benefits and limitations as it pertains to ADHD.
@letsdomath1750
@letsdomath1750 4 жыл бұрын
@@mellang2817 It will take care of the symptoms, but if there's a neurophysiological aberration that is behind ADHD, then this alone wouldn't be enough to correct that.

I had a very interesting & similar experience. I had really bad ADHD and wasn't on medication because I was fearful of the side effects. I was totally scatter-brained though. But I want to go to a top 10 law school and started studying for the LSAT exam. It was excruciatingly hard to beat this test (score near perfect, a 180) because I couldn't concentrate. This exam requires 100% intense focus. I got by in college with ADHD but not this test. After studying full time for this test, it did something to my mind, but I took a year off studying. I then went to a hypnotherapist for 3 months for helping to treat my anxiety and then embarked on a year's worth of heavy meditation everyday. I picked the test back up at the end of last year and noticed I had a totally different mind and my ADHD was completely cured. My IQ seriously increased by like 20 points because my mind actually slowed down and is now able to process complex thought without disruption. In fact, I'm almost at the LSAT score I need to apply to Harvard & Yale. There's something to this that's so real I can't even put into words. We live in such a false system where drugs are prescribed as the only solutions to this problem created by people who are making trillions of dollars.

Doctors told my parents a few times to have me tested for ADHD. Never got there. I've briefly tried meditation a few times but feel trapped in cycles of procrastination habits, the inability to take continuous action, and can't keep focus enough to pursue meditation to the extent that could/would help me. I'm a single dad of 2 and feel so overwhelmed most of the time that I cycle back through unproductive vices (vaping/nicotine dependency) and habits (like watching KZbin videos). I'll get motivation for a period, keep focus, then fall back into "comforting" patterns by exhaustion, because I don't feel I have the energy to maintain focus. I am a serial overthinker...like I wish I could think of 5 ways to say that to effectively communicate the amount I feel it. I feel stuck in a state of cycles that prevents me from raising my average state to where it could be. I even hear the answers to these problems in my head, like the idea that I see what benefit meditation could bring and what my average state "could" be, but I'm stuck...On some level I don't believe it, and/or I don't believe the people that talk the way you do won't crash and return to the state you're running from. I'm a programmer, and my overthinking may be my biggest strength in that regard. I feel like this is one of the things that keeps me in/returning to the overthinking state of mind.

@stephenr85
@stephenr85 7 жыл бұрын
EgorShalvarov I tried it for the first time last night. Planning to continue. As I described though, doubt and distraction may prevent me from sticking to it. I've been thinking, "5 years, EVERY night, this guy is somewhere that he has a candle and space to do this? Sounds like generality BS. Is he full of it or this just another irrelevant train of thought? Maybe both?" Have you done it on a regular basis?
@ShallShallShall
@ShallShallShall 7 жыл бұрын
Ironically, like yourself I also tried it for the first time last night. I have done some meditation before, so some things were not new, yet were a good reminder. Honestly, I think Aaron has done a pretty good job describing what is it that he's doing and why he does it. Would I fully take his routine? Possibly. Out of curiosity I would try and experience "his way" in the beginning, but I will definitely alter some things to my personal liking when the time comes. I don't think he's full of it. I'm sure he's developed his focus so well, that he doesn't need the candle anymore. He probably brought it up as a good "focus" example to start with.
@stephenr85
@stephenr85 7 жыл бұрын
EgorShalvarov, agreed. I think the idea that's already provided some clarity is not being so reactive to thoughts or entertaining them -- just recognize when you are lost in thought, and observe them come and go. I've been doing it for a couple minutes here and there when I feel my mind spinning out, and it's more difficult at times, but I think it will get easier if I stick to it as an "exercise". Good luck.
@ShallShallShall

Great Aaron - Different from other meditations I have tried, have you thought of actually making a real live meditation instruction, in other words, a follow-up to this one with less talk and with a gentler set of instructions with the candle and one that runs the whole 20 minutes so people could follow what you do, at least until they get more comfortable with it and they develop their own technique.

You didn't learn it in school because the established power that set up the educational system is corrupt and doesn't want conscious, powerful citizens that would be hard for them to control. Definitely needs to be part of the toolkit we teach though, in this modern society if you DON'T meditate I would say you have a 90%+ chance of developing ADD/ADHD symptoms. Check out YT video "Don't Stay In School" for more things that should be part of the curriculum.

"What if you never really had depression, anxiety, bipolar, PTSD etc. disorder in the first place?" People crack me up when it comes to telling someone that what they're experiencing and have to live with in a crippling state all their life isn't real when plenty of science and research notes otherwise and that medication and therapy proves to help many change their lives forever. No wonder why we have a world wide mental health issue. We're ignorant to the suffering of others that we can't visably see.

I really hope there's a way to cure cripping anxiety/panic attacks.. because I can't handle the scary feelings and thoughts any more. The good thing is I believe I can cure this by meditation and a simple life change, will power and self strength. I know I can do it. But I just want to find a good meditation specifically for that.

It is difficult to observe thoughts that can bring emotion. They are charged w emotion, which is where the effect of the vibration of the body comes in. Thoughts that have no feeling in them are easy to observe. It's the ones that you " feel" that effect your state. This is where I have difficulty. Positive thoughts w emotion aren't bad as that is the beginning of the manifestation of them into reality. We don't want to manifest neg thoughts into reality though!

Aaron. I haven't necessarily experienced the more harsh effects of taking Adderall, but I've recently considered stopping (30mg XR morning, 10-20 mg booster afternoon). What would you consider "harsh side effects"? I have to say, even while on my dose, following along with this exercise (and adding the candle) made me much more and observant of my thoughts. Thanks brother!

Hey Gavin! When i took Adderall the side-effects I experienced were not being able to eat as much during the day and having difficulty sleeping at night. I was taking the immediate release ones though and not the XR. If you begin meditating daily you may notice your attention span growing and may eventually not need to take as much, if any. I encourage you to experiment with meditation and see you it makes you feel. I'm happy to hear it helped! Much Love!

Excellent videos! Thanks :) My mind completely wanders away when I try to meditate. I find that 10-15 minutes have passed and I realize that one thought has led to another and another and another. I'll find that I've created a lesson plan for a student, managed to have a "discussion" with a friend or made a list that began with that first thought. Once I realize this, I bring myself back, but because this is pretty consistant, I end up giving up after a few weeks in frustration. Can you address this or, if you've already done so, can you direct me to the video? You've covered several things that have been incredibly helpful and I'm so appreciative. Thanks again !

Art Classes in Orange County from what I’ve read that’s how it goes and you must keep at it. The more you do the better you will become at bringing your mind back. Don’t be too hard on yourself. Just gently acknowledge the fact that you have wandered and then bring it back. Be gentle on yourself and don’t give up! Have u heard of the app called ‘headspace’ ?

@letsdomath1750
@letsdomath1750 4 жыл бұрын
You don't have to focus on the breath. You can focus on something external like the candle flame or on a sound like a mantra. You can also focus on your heartbeat. It serves as an anchor to give your mind something to do until it gets bored and the intrusive thoughts slow down and perhaps cease all together for a few moments. Deepening your breath and fixing your gaze both help relax the mind and make it one-pointed, but if it is difficult to start with those, try running, rock climbing, or lifting weights, followed by yoga asanas and controlled breathing exercises where you are consciously changing your breathing pattern and not just observing the breath. That way you will burn off excess energy and release more neuromuscular tension before doing subtler concentration practices. Self-inquiry questions could also be done instead of all of the above. It depends on which approach you can apply more readily.

Hey Aaron very powerful advise! I too have ADHD and didn't realize it until I google searched it. I can't seem to focus on anything, even when meditating I find myself thinking of things I should have done, should do now and even during work I forget what a client told me, like their email, their name etc. I have to go back and listen to the recording just to make my notes accurate. I am subscribed to your channel, can you please make a guided meditation video for people like me? I've lost several jobs because of not being able to pay attention to details and remembering things. I believe this could be the main reason I can't open my third eye, been trying nearly six months now.

Hi Ben, I meditate. There is a difference. When we recognize the nature of our thoughts, we become the observer. We who percieves only. We watch. It takes time to perfect, we step back, out of the equation, to view without construction. Then we examine our thoughts and what arises from them. 1 is to become the observer, establish a "platform to view from" that does not try to construct, only see 2 is to observe from that place, that is removed from what you observe. I hope this is helpful, and that I am right to place it here. ☺
