I decided to challenge myself to meditate for an hour a day for a week, and see where I ended up.
There were two main reasons why I wanted to try this out: I wanted to push myself to do something new and also I wanted to do something positive for my mental health, which had felt like it was sliding in the wrong direction for a little while.
Truly a fascinating experience, I highly recommend anyone that is interested to try this out.

I'm blown away by the amazing response to this video. I would have never thought that KZbin would promote a video like this (serious topic, slower pacing, etc.) but I just wanted to say thank you for all of the lovely comments and suggestions. There's a lot more of this kind of thing and my search for mental clarity on my channel, so feel free to check it out if you're interested!

Can you please reply to my comment? I did notice in this video you said you felt energized. I feel like after 10 minutes or so I’m not energized or full of energy but I definitely feel clear minded or grounded. Is that normal? Will practicing it more often not make me feel that way? Just looking to see if it’s normal to not feel “energized” after

I've been meditating for 1 hour a day for about a year now, I feel like I'm living in a totally different dimension, as if my reality has been turned upside down (but it was really like this the whole time and I just didn't notice). some of the changes I've experienced are: - Now I'm very patient, if I am forced to wait anywhere for any reason I can just meditate and feel even better the rest of the day instead of feeling like I've been inconvenienced by the world. - I can hear sounds and smell smells around me that I wouldn't have been aware of before (yes sometimes this isn't the best thing) - It's hard to explain but I don't feel like being indoors and being outdoors are different things, like being inside feels like I'm outside except with four walls, a floor, a ceiling and AC. Being outside feels like I'm in a really big house that I can't see the ceilings or the walls of because they are too far away. Sounds trippy I know but I looked it up and apparently It's related to something called "non-dual awareness" - I really don't get insulted when people say mean things to me, I either ignore it completely or I'll actually laugh because it's funny and true -You know when you go to a store like best buy and look at the newest TVs? You know how you can see all the little details? That's what my vision is like after I meditate and it's not like it gets wildly better after meditating, it's just that my consciousness is able to be aware of minute detail because it's not occupied with whatever thought I had in my head - Speaking of that, all my internal monologue goes away if I'm focused on anything like how I'm typing out this comment. It's really great because I get everything done faster and more efficiently. - Sometimes if I meditate twice in a day or just have a really good session, I feel the space between myself and the world disappear, or more like I realize there's no reason for thoughts or emotional reactions at the moment so all that there's left are my senses and those are just reflections of the world. Anyway long story short, I became mentally sharper, more spatially aware, and A LOT more agreeable/open and pleasant to be around. I'm pretty young so I can't wait to see where this goes by the time I'm old :)

Good on ya! What's your practice like? I've experienced similar and some very dramatic shifts and experiences during my time when I was meditating more consistently (including some incredible states of bliss, openness and clarity). But have felt like it wasn't impacting my core psychological challenges enough. so I've been focusing more on that. I had some very good instructions in indo-tibetan meditations around concentration, emptiness, non-duality and awakening but have been going through a period of less interest in meditation... or less commimtent. going through somewhat of a disillusionment experience but i'm working my way back into a daily practice. Glad you're having positive effects! Stay With it:)
@MadDannyWest

@@alchemyst2000 My practice is rooted in Vipassana and Zen Buddhism, I got my methods from a book called "The Science of Enlightenment," It's really cool because the author attempts to convey all the subtleties of meditation from beginner to enlightened using scientific language, but he doesn't make it dense and boring like you're reading a research paper. If you want to get a taste of his teaching here on youtube checkout the channel "Shinzen Videos" As for your problem, I think you might've hit a plateau in your practice if you feel as though you aren't making any progress or processing certain traumas, my advice to you would be to: - try different practices - Go to a retreat - keep doing what you are doing for longer periods of time or dedicate a day out the month to meditation and remember, there's no "right way" of meditation, the right way is the way that works for you :)

I started meditating every day for about 40-45 minutes for 11 months now. It has completely changed my life.. it is super important. I am now firmly believe that this should be offered to children in schools. Or better yet parents teach their children. It just makes for a much healthier Society. I could write a book on how it has changed my life. Sometimes I do it twice a day or more. Because when you get in that sweet spot of consciousness it is the best feeling you could ever ever experience. No sex drugs anything combined could give you that was for a loving peaceful just ecstatic overwhelming feeling. Now I know what heaven is.

I still "struggle" to find time on some days, but I've decided to stick to it and I just skip 1-2 videos on KZbin to do it. :) Seems like you are watching useful videos like this one, so the hours spent on KZbin might be not that bad after all. :)

I love the way our generation is embracing wellness and mental health, and being so open and transparent in their journeys to achieve health in all aspects of their life. And as someone with brothers, it’s even more heartening to see all the young men on this journey, particularly as the older men in my family always held in their emotions, which did not help many of them later in life. Love this move in the right direction thank you Nathaniel ❤️

Is anyone else curious where this consciousness journey will take us?.. If you look at the big picture- we're really in our infancy with many different types of awareness right now. Society right now is the furthest away from a status quo that it has been in the history of humanity. So where are these transient times going to take us? For all the changes our grandparents saw, we will see even faster change, and one of those aspects will be the awareness of the human condition, both psychologically and spiritually.

While I deeply appreciate the young people you describe, you need to remember that that is not ALL of that generation, just as all the Boomers you describe are not representative of ALL my generation. Like many other like minded Teen and 20 somethings back in the 60s. 70s and 80s, I was vegan, marched for CND, Anti-apartheid, gave money for those struggling in post revolutionary Nicargua (we weren't' to know back then how that would turn out of course), writing hundreds upon hundreds of letters for Amnesty. Every generation has it's social justice warriors - and I use that label with pride: don't let anyone use it as an insult against you; it's a marvellous thing to stand up for the oppressed. People were also demonstrating for a fairer world back in the 1900s, the 20s and 30s - the Battle of Cable street against British Fascists being just one example. Again, I appreciate what you are saying, but don't be so broadly condemning of one generation. We are your parents, your uncles and aunts and we care about he world too. Individuals did contribute to climate change and did vote in the assholes who screwed up the environment, but ultimately it is the politicians we vote in who screw this world up, and a political system that serves only the rich and vested interests.

Feel like meditating would just make me a negative person. I'm positive and perfectly fine, I don't really ever focus on negative things. However that's all meditation would do, it would just make me focus on all the missed opportunitys and mistakes I've made in life and how I'll never be able to change that. It would just make me feel helpless and emotional, it's makes 0 sense how it helps anyone.

For many years I have been naturally waking at 0400, and wrapping in a light blanket, and sitting in my chair in front of my bedroom window, and just being in the silence until 0700, and some days 0800. I slip into my aplha state...that twilight zone and just sit still. It just happens. I feel very blessed to be able to do this, and wish everyone else could also. I think for meditation ( I call it the silence ) people try WAY too hard. Just BE present. Give yourself this time. It is amazing how it sets your day.

The deeper you go in meditation, the happier you'll be. Unfortunately many people get stuck on the first part - when just starting out your mind is almost guaranteed to run wild, since you have no practice stilling it. This can be frustrating, or even scary to a lot of people who usually push difficult things to the back of their mind. If you're at that point and questioning whether it's worth it to continue, I assure you it is. I could make a strong case for meditation being the most important activity you can do in your life. When you are more experienced you get it. "Happiness comes from within", we've all heard it. But when you meditate, you feel it. Happiness springs spontaneously from within, prompted by nothing, and theoretically never ending. Do it for your own happiness.

That happens to me a lot, my mind kind of runs wild....if I am meditating or even just sitting by myself for a while and my mind starts to wander, I start to realize all the possibilities but sometimes for some reason, I feel overwhelmed thinking about it like there is so much I want to do and I am missing out on it or something. It makes me more hyper/excited sometimes while anxious or depressed other times...

Also the shadow self and deeper parts of the mind can be scary a lot of people don’t wanna relive their demons and dark times but they’ll come to pass but you have to do just that or they’ll continue to stay inside of you and it doesn’t help to ignore it because one way or the other it’s gonna come out or make itself known I’ve learned this greatly cause all of my guides or spirit are telling me it’s time to awaken because I got kinda scared of my shadow but everywhere I go I’m left staring at a quote that says it’s time to awaken and my third eye is extremely easy to get in contact with which makes me realize it’s time and should be opened by now so this is where I begin I’ll definitely update

One of my most cherished meditation teachers told me that "meditation is not another tool for self abuse". I completely relate to what you say about being hard on yourself. It's so interesting to see all these behaviors and patterns of thinking once we sit and look. I have been guided to sit with an attitude of friendliness with myself. That suggestion alone changed my practice entirely! Any time my mind wanders off on a tangent and I realise it, instead of getting angry with myself I simply smile and approach with an attitude of "aha! Welcome back!" With a loving and friendly attitude.

Placing yourself in a space where you begin to question your ego is probably one of the scariest things we can do. Our egos try to protect us and it's in this space where it starts to fight against the quiet. Noise and chaos is where the ego thrives, crazily enough it enjoys being in the fight for survival because it feels useful. "Steadying the ship" as you say is a process that takes daily practice. So much respect for your journey! Thank you for sharing this. It's a beautiful reminder to return to practice. Peace and light.

Hey man, meditation is extremely important. It seems that there is a growing audience as people begin to disconnect it with the spiritual/religious language surrounding it. Executives, Presidents of companies, and CEO's are the ones meditating these days. Meditation is simply the act of bringing your focus back as soon as you realize your thoughts have drifted. You can focus on absolutely anything, really. You can focus on your breath, your feet on the floor, a particular thought, question, or feeling, driving, brushing teeth and other routine things. Indeed, it would be possible to 'meditate' for an entire 24 hours by being in the moment! It seems like a worthy long-term goal!

About the anxiety: I cry and talk to my mom or my partner. I used to feel like I was burdening them until I realized they could cry/talk to me too and that I felt grateful that I could be there for them and share this connection. Some people take mushrooms/MDMA and do talk therapy while deep-diving into their worst fears and that seems to have a similar effect on PTSD and anxiety. Great video. This is so true to my experience in meditation retreats. The first few days you just realize how critical you are of yourself and the painful experiences that are still lingering in your body and mind.

Hello, Nathan Zak here Wow; impressive. I've studying meditation for three years now, and I must admit your video brought me to a very vulnerable state while watching it. Extremely powerful. Complete respect, amd keep it up. As an individual who struggled with substance abuse and was raised in a broken family. Meditation has shown me a new reality and lead eventually lead me to your video. Amazing. Much love brother.

I would just like to take a moment to congratulate you on your spiritual and mental journey. I'm so proud for you that you took the grand opportunity to meditate an hour a day for a week. You were doing extremely well with understanding what was going on in your mind and body. Keeping yourself warm certainly makes it easier to meditate and imagining that light passing through your body is a very good technique. I'm so happy you've done this for yourself and shared it with the world. Congratulations and I hope you enjoy your journey

Love this. I have been on a meditation journey along with one of my friends. I will either meditate by myself or we will get on a zoom call and play a guided meditation and reflect afterwards. There are days when I really struggle through it whether I'm struggling to center my focus or I may be fidgety but then good days overweigh the tough ones. I love the feeling at the end when you open your eyes and feel lighter and you can't help but smile. By the way, I love that "bean bag" chair and was wondering where I could get one like that!

Thank you for this! I'm touched by your openness about your anxiety (which I also experience, especially in the last few months since suddenly ending up in the hospital for a week--yikes) and about your commitment to trying a new way to navigate it. I'm feeling pretty inspired to try this out. I've been meditating 20 minutes in the morning for the past couple weeks, and I feel like increasing that would be an interesting experiment.

I haven’t had an anxiety attack for almost 4 months. Worth a try! Ashwagandha is another one that is amazing! Read, read, read and do what you feel is best for you! 🙏🏼Peace and calm for you!

Visualisation is a very powerful technique, I used to spend 2-3 hours visualising a candle while meditating just before going to sleep, I found some very profound emotions in this so called meditative state also known in eastern culture as the void. Something about it that’s beneficial for all of us.

An hour a day is mammoth! What an awesome video. I loved the music, the sound quality, the time lapses and your reflections on the meditations. And man, you're right about being hard on yourself. I've never had much anxiety in my life but I know about having pretty severe expectations. When you think about it, that's a mechanism of our minds, its a narrative that we choose to latch on to. Its the dark side of conscientiousness. You're 100% right about how meditation allows you to spin the spotlight around and shed some light on your internal world. Meditation has helped me see myself with greater clarity and non judgement. I will be subscribing to this channel. Thanks heaps for sharing mate. Peace.

Nathaniel. You have a huge amount of nervous energy combined with a sharp intellect. You are a natural to become a great yogi. You remind me one other guy in my life who was my spiritual son. He is multi-talented, moody and brilliant like you. Met him when he was 24 and very dissatisfied with his life. He's now 46, living in France in a small village with his French wife and with two young sons and is a university professor in Limoges.
