My mother taught us as children, (over 50 years ago) to pillow our cheeks on folded arms or extend one arm and sleep on our face or chin...never on our hair. ... important things especially as hair goes past mid back length: pin hair up...don't just wear it down. the weight over time will pull at the roots and thin if it is continually worn loose. This why locks longer than mid back are often very thin or balding on the very top of the head..this is due to TRACTION ALOPECIA. Edge hair is very prone to breakage and rubbing off, so it is best to not use gel or other product and stay away from up do's that require pulling or clean edges. Resist having clean edges and allow retightening on edges every other visit and tighten only to about 1 rotation less. edge hair is very fragile so is prone to thinning and breakage more as the top of your head is prone to thinning due to weight. Long hair should mostly be pinned up and cover hair when windy, very sunny, or cold outside. hair loss or thinning due to rubbing of wigs, hats, scarves or sleeping on one's hair is FRICTION ALOPECIA. With that in mind, be sure you wear your satin bonnet inside out with the finished ban on your forehead, not on your edges. Over time, if not corrected , both can lead to permanent thinning or hair loss.

Thanks for the tips, great video! I never thought of changing up which side I sleep on to prevent thinning. I've got sooo much to learn still.

Thanks for the video! Playing with the hair and/or touching it, pulling it, etc unconsciously also thins hair out. I learned that the hard way because my locs in the back thinned out until I started leaving my hair alone.
