You’re welcome! I followed Dharma’s recipe. As you see it’s really easy. Urea isn’t absolutely necessary, but it helps the fabric stay damp during batching. The double batch sits under my dye table for weeks which is convenient. ❤️🌈

Urea really makes a BIG difference in keeping the project moist during batching. If it dries out the process stops. I highly recommend urea. ❤️🌈

So when I mix, say 8 ounces of dye, do I fill my dye bottle with the appropriate amount of dye powder and 8 ounces of urea water, or just 1 tablespoon of urea water and then just plain water up to the 8 ounce mark?

Good question! This was one I was confused about at first. The “urea water” is the water. So for mixing dye it’s 1 cup “urea water” and 2 tsp. dye, * 4 tsp dye, ** 8 tsp dye. How long is that urea water good for? Can it sit on your shelf for weeks before you finish it all?

I keep it under my sink. I’d say a month or so. If it smells strong of ammonia it has soured. When I’m actively liquid dyeing I go through it pretty quickly so it’s never turned on me personally. ❤️🌈

I have found that if using RIT dye the urea (which is what is in the dye fixative solution that RIT sells) is absolutely necessary to get vibrant and bold colors and preserve any white. I use Diesel Exhaust Fpuid for diesel engines and mix my own solution. I add 6 cups of water to 1 cup DEF. I use the solution instead of water to dampen my shirts prior to color application and I add about 1/2 cup to the hot water delicate cycle of my washing machine. It gives excellent results for me. Good to know that someone else uses it for the same reason I do.

So I mixed mine too heavy and it formed crystals around the jar I used. There is sludge in the bottom. Should I remix it with more water or should I start over?

Hmm… I’ve never had that happen. I suppose you could dilute it. When in doubt, pour it out. 😉❤️🌈

It’s a wetting agent. It helps stubborn dyes dissolve easier during mixing and then it helps the project stay damp for the batching process. It’s not 100% necessary to use it. As long as you have soda ash and procion dye you should be golden. I use it. If it came in the kit you might as well use it. ❤️🌈

Urea is a wetting agent. It helps keep the fabric damp during the dyeing process so the dye has time to react with the natural fibers. It’s not 100% necessary as long as you keep the item covered during batching. 👍❤️🌈

We mix dyes in water and then 2x concentrated urea water but i don't have the amounts with me to do it at home. How much dye would i put in 1c of plain water to mix 1:1 with the urea water?

Great question. It’s my understanding that urea does two things. The first thing, it’s supposed to help dyes dissolve better. Secondly, it’s a wetting agent, so it keeps the dye moist longer so it has time to react with the fibers in the fabric. This is information I received from Dharma. It isn’t essential to use urea but I figure I use everything else, so, why not... 🤷‍♀️❤️🌈
