In this video we mix 3 parts sand, one part cement and some reinforcing fibre in order to make some reinforced mortar to repoint a lead roof valley. This mortar is mixed with SBR instead f water, which helps to make the mortar more flexible and waterproof. Links to the fibre and SBR can be found here-

We used to accomplish a similar effect to the SBR by adding 1-2 cups of bulk PVA glue to a mixer of concrete. Stopped moisture leaching the salt out of our retaining walls.

Love it hairy concrete, have to do this next year so need to track down that fibre reinforcer, only negative is the fast set time, so I guess mix small amounts throughout the day. Excellent detail and tips Master Handyman many thanks!

This seems like a good idea where cement needs to be waterproof and have resistance to cracking from frost and movement etc. Builders merchants should stock the reinforcing fibre.

Hello great video. Could this be used for a house foundation, or screed floors? Also does the sbr in the mix help it adhere to old concrete?

wonderful channel keep up the good work..I am thinking of doing this mix 3sand 1cement for bathroom walls and found equivalent to SBR here in Australia I am going for Bondall Silasec Water Proofer ..but cannot find the shreded fibre fabric ..but can buy the fibre glass fabric in 1 meter by 1 meter size.. if I then shred it using a scissors ..do you think I can get the same result or can I prepare the mix without the fibre

+Danny Dora Thanks, I just found some on ebay in Australia- fave.co/1Sd5C3y I don't think cutting up a sheet of fibre glass will be any good as the strands in the reinforcing fibre are very fine.

Flexible and cement are not two things I usually think of together. There is a lot to learn about this material. Your videos are so varied and informative, thanks. I could not see and you did not mention, I think, if you are working with this kind of stuff do you need breathing protecting and if so what kind do you recommend?
@ultimatehandyman
@ultimatehandyman 9 жыл бұрын
+justgivemethetruth I'm not sure to be honest. There was no heath and safety information on the bag that the fibre came in. I am sure the fibres are made from either polypropylene or polyester and so should not pose a health risk. Wearing a dust mask should ensure that non of the fibres are inhaled, but it's unlikely that they will be airborne if you handle the carefully. Thanks for the comment ;-)
@justgivemethetruth
@justgivemethetruth 9 жыл бұрын
+Ultimate Handyman I've always heard that you should not inhale cement particles for sure, but I have no idea how high they can float in the air. I thought the fibers would be made from silica/fiberglass and did not know about polypropylene fiber reinforcement. I guess you learn something every day on You-Tube. Thanks.
@ultimatehandyman
@ultimatehandyman 9 жыл бұрын
+justgivemethetruth Oh yes, cement is bad and if you are working in a confined space then definitely wear a dust mask when mixing. Plaster is also bad and should not be inhaled. If mixing inside I would definitely wear a dust mask. Thanks for the comments ;-)

Where can you get the SBR stuff in Australia? I guess it comes under a different brand name ? I just want to mix a small amount of pointing cement for a tile roof ridge, don't want to buy a bucket of the flexible roof pointing compound. Your formula seems to be ideal. Thank you.

Dear U/H Man I am trying to make a concrete bathroom sink top in a ( top fill mold) in place I f that makes sence and would be grateful if you could advise me on a good mix of cement ( maybe / not sand) and or SBR that will leave me with a good smooth finish without too much in the way of diamond sanding when finishing off. Many thanks Adrian. Great videos very informative thanks

Can we mixed PVA with plaster of Paris?
@ultimatehandyman
@ultimatehandyman Жыл бұрын
Not sure about that. I always use SBR when mixing mortar, but I’ve never tried it with plaster of Paris 🤔 PVA is not a good thing to mix with anything that could potentially get wet, as it can turn back to a liquid.
