I can't tell you how much this helped me. I just recently got back into doing oil's. A friend from Facebook liked a drawing that I did and wanted to pay for it. It's really not a great piece of art. So I decided to step up my game and take on the challenge to give him a better work of art. I've been looking countlessly over some of the other artist turitiorials, but I have got nothing from them but confusion. So many colors to use for skin tones. But now I've come across this and it has been a breathe of fresh air. Thank you so much for you support and experience for sharing.

I can't thank you enough. I used the four colors at the end (Yellow oxide, Burnt Siena, Burnt Umber and Titanium White) To paint a portrait of my Latino friends for a special gift. It was amazing! I think it's the first good portrait I have ever done! I added a little Cadmium Red as they have very warm skin tones. Thanks so much!!!

Thank you!! It has always been my first instinct to mix as few colours as possible, normally 2 colours plus white. But after watching all the colour mixing videos on youtube where people mix pretty much all colours on the palette together i started trying complicated combos and ending up with mud. Your video gave me the confidence to come back to my original approach!

Andrew, Your passion for painting is contagious! I was already passionate but you make it informative as well as fun to listen.... You do a fantastic job explaining. I also enjoy all your personal painting commissions and stories. I started in my spare time after work day and weekends starting mostly in what I believe to be my most desirable medium OILS. I am in awe of your pictures and realize while I believe I have some initial talent as I get into it, but realize the realism and detail you get with the colors is incredible.... Thanks so much and I cant get enough especially your passion.... Ken (Jackson NJ USA)

My thoughts on color skin tone mix...An American perspective: Dear Mr. Andrew, you've taken me back to my childhood :). How much we here in America have collectively 'forgotten'. This particular clip has special poignancy for me because I also happen to be a teacher. Color theory is one of the hardest things to teach students today. I think it is because so much in real life and so many things visually are, 'spoon-fed' to our young people. It took me the longest time to figure out WHY. We live in a color world where everything is now in color. We have hi-def, low-def, mono color, stereo color .....you understand what I mean. Watching a couple of your videos made me finally understand why this concept is so hard for young people nowadays to understand. It is because schools no longer teach (true) color theory any more. Primary / elementary grade school teachers from what I have observed have skipped completely over this very important concept and go straight over to teaching / showing drawing and painting techniques . They do so however, in my opinion, by leaving out all the important parts of how you make and equally complement similar and divergent colors in the color spectrum. Therefore, all I can say is hats of to you for such a fine lesson, in reminding me of my childhood and helping to bringing us all full circle back to color basics :) .

Brilliant as always Andrew, keep them coming I am learning so much from you it is really helping the way I look at my own work now. I can see so much of where I went wrong on certain ones, that I just couldn't figure out before. I used to try and go straight to the detail thinking that was the only way to get realism, but your way makes so much sense. I love the way you explain what colours you use and why and this quick clip really does nail it.

Yup..good ideas there. I don't use black though, it's a little flat for my liking. I will make a video about this, but I like to mix an equivalent, then it coordinates with the other colours.

Yellow ochre should do the trick. Yellow oxide is heat treated Iron Oxide and is more pungent than the ochre. It's awesome, but I don't think it's a must have per se. Thanks heaps for the kind words.
