Great walkthrough! I think one of the best things with the Zorn/ limited palette is that it’s fairly easy to remember, and to see how you mixed the colours, when needing to go back to a certain colour and mix it again.

Thank you Andrew you have taken some of the mystery, and fear out of tackling a portrait! Watching you go through the process of experimenting with creating the colors you wanted, was also super helpful! I like the idea of having a separate piece of canvas to test the colors. Amazing, thank you, you're the best!

Color and color mixing is what it is. I've always mixed allot on the canvas. Your brush work, however, is absolutely great! You patience is incredible, especially with your larger landscape works! Good tips for attitude on sticking with it.

Thank you Andrew. I am not a painer. I draw pencil sketches by my own. I have been watching portrait painting for few weeks and got your channel popped up in YT recommendations. I was amazed. For a moment I thought you were touching the face of a real, living, person with your brushe but then it turned out to be your mastery of painting of a portrait. I love watching breath-taking every moment of your video. Thank you so much and I really appreciate you for sharing your knowledge. Keep up the good sharing. I will definitely visit your webpage and learn some more. I liked your video, your style, and your simplicity. Thank you.

Excellent instruction Andrew, with different techniques to satisfy anyone's method! I learned to paint over the grisaille with opaque paints, not transparent, which was also very instructional to follow form. Somehow I missed knowing about the Zorn Palette but you have demonstrated versatility in extremely limited palette techniques. I'm reminded the old masters had to mix their own colors themselves, so they didn't have all the variety we take for granted, but they knew how to paint! It is very educational to learn one's craft intensely this way before expanding into new areas. Well done Andrew!

never to late to start. you may feel like you have to much to learn and not the time to do it, even the masters have more to learn though. its an ongoing journey and as im sure you know, its always about the journey and not the destination. you dont need to turn out masterworks for your art to have merit or make people happy.

Lovely and very useful! Funny story! About three years ago, my painting teacher introduced us to the Zorn palette. I had never heard of him but looked up his bio. About three months later, I was with friends visiting Asheville, NC for Thanksgiving. We went to the Biltmore Estate and in the Tapestry room I came face to face with a Zorn original. At first, it reminded me of a Renoir so I asked the docent. She said, "No, that is Anders Zorn who was famous for his 4-color palette!" haha. It was quite a coincidence! Vanderbilt had purchased this painting at the 1893 Chicago World's Fair.

Andrew, I really love watching your portrait videos. I especially like the different styles of brushes that you use. I haven't seen the sharp, angled brush that you use in your portrait paintings. I particularly like your technique of applying tiny little dots of paint on the finishing touches which is something that you do so well. I will use that technique when I do my next portrait painting! I want to watch more and more of your videos.

I like your application of the Zorn Palette, I made a chart using the Zorn Palette, Ivory Black, Lead White and Titanium White, Cad Red Light, Yellow Ocher, the Ivory Black really give off notes of blue, the Lead White and Titanium White mixed is in the middle between warm and cool. I really recommend that every painter make as many charts as they can they are invaluable. Thanks for the video well done.

I tried this a 8 months ago and man, what a difference. Due to four colours, and creating a colour chart I was able to remove muddy colours. I am able to paint whatever colour I want just using these four colours. That gave me enough understanding that I found the approach I have been looking for years when painting so I will getting your course in a week from now to learn far more. The great experience from this approach is I can focus more, not get distracted due to so many tubes. I can just use the four colours and mix and walla, got my colour. Also due to the colour charts I mixed, that also helped a lot knowing how to get paint colour I need. Thanks for video, very helpful.

I took a portrait class where we learned the masters used only yellow ocher, venetian red, ivory black and white. Amazing, we were able to make all the colors from those four, even an earthy blue, though not a pure blue.
@DCweldingAndArt
@DCweldingAndArt 2 жыл бұрын
How would u compare results between venetian, cadmium red light, and genuine vermillion(apparently what zorn used, mercuric sulfide) just got a Harding Vermillion in yesterday. 20 percent off lol had to try it. Very warm compared to cadmium, yet cooler than venetian. So I wonder how the gradients vary
@filledemartel732
@filledemartel732 2 жыл бұрын
@@DCweldingAndArt venetian is more of an earthy brick red. I am not sure how it compares to cadmium or vermillion, except they are a more pure red? I haven't tried them compared to venetian red yet. My common sense tells me that a painter can get a wider variety of colors with a more pure red like cadmium or vermillion. I think the earthy color of venetian or brick red would limit the pallet to more natural, earthy colors which works with skin colors. Makes sense since we are made from dirt anyway, lol
@DCweldingAndArt
@DCweldingAndArt 2 жыл бұрын
@@filledemartel732 my common sense tells me the same haha! Maybe it was a senseless obvious question but I asked all the same. 🤣 thanks for the response. I guess if u had tried all three I would've been looking for a preference according which had a more natural variety of skintones. I would think venetian and vermillion. Given that they're earthier and less saturated. (I like all three but I prefer the earthy effect) feels more true to life.
