Nice, not only this technique is great for DJs who have trouble beatmatching, but it is also great for mobile DJs as well.

J used this video to illustrate another method for mixing, one that did not involve using beats. He explained that it was an alternate thing to do. The key with this game, once you figure out which music to play, is being original and not being repetitive. The real pro's out there who have been doing this "forever" know so many songs, that they can indeed think of many songs that have music breaks, and if they don't match up key for key, the pitch bend can usually correct. MUSIC IS #1

mstorm007 it is demonstrating harmonic mixng and showing people that beat matching is not the only way u can mix tracks. so THE POINT of the video is to help those who cant beatmatch OR to help DJs that can beat match understand and learn so they can add one more method of mixng to their list of knowledge of mixing. MOST IMPORTANT point is understanding melody and music. its just another way to be creative in the mix. In conclusion this video is to show you that beatmatching is not the only way!

you answered your own critisicism in your comment! you say you havent a clue about DJing, thats why you do not 'get' the video! i, myself a dj, kind of knew this already, but i expect a lot of would-be DJs do not. Jonathan does videos to help weould-be DJs, and i think this is a perfect video for them!

well the thing is that every record has its own BPM and if you are starting from a clean slate you need atleast count BPM on each record and it takes time to learn it old school, but when you do it is easy to mix caus u can allmost predict the beet and the mix by listening to bouth songs, in the end you will mix good but it takes time

... (continued) the turntable coast down to the proper speed (note: right after cutting the power, turn it back on - the strobe indicator is set to 33.3 RPM by default, so you'll see when the platter is almost exactly there) and set the pitch control to 0 (I usually did that to get the new track into its normal key). When the dots representing 0 pitch deviation are almost "still", hit the start button, and you'll now be at the new (drastically different) tempo without stopping the beat. Enjoy!

I follow what you are doing ellaskins, it's quite simple and everybody with a sence of logic can figure it out. You're taking 2 easy tracks and mixing them over, try giving some examples with songs that are harder to mix. Your videos are good, however i've noticed in almost all of you're videos your selection of quite... easy songs :) Cheers

Right , nice mix , but actually when you can't beatmix well , practice will help to get better , people has to know : Never give up , try , try , try , keep on trying , Rome hasn't been build in one day. Practice & practice & practice and do enjoy

but if the last track was pitched and there is no pitchlock you would have to move the pitch of that one :P anyway great video I've made some mixes in that way since here in Mexico there are a lot of rhythms and styles.

I disagree...everyone can learn how to beat match. I think it helps if you do your homework and make sure you aren't trying to mix a song at 96bpm with one at 128 bpm. It helps to work with similar tempos. Also, it really helps to have a mixer that sends out a split cue, meaning one deck in the left ear and the other in the right ear. I couldn't figure out why it was so hard on my mixer, and then I used a DJM800 with a split cue and it made life so much easier. Anyone can do this.

Thanks for this tutorial Johnothan, but still abit confused. How do I for example when I rock up to play a set mix my first track which is at 140bpm into the last track the dj before me was playing at 150bpm? Slowing the 150bpm track down to 140bpm might sound abit too slow and boring. How do i go about this? It always makes me abit nervous and start off my set abit sketchy. Thanks Karsten

When you tap your foot to the music, each tap is a beat. The number of taps over a one minute period equals the BPM or beats per minute. You can count them in your head whilst using a stopwatch or you could mark them down on paper and count them up afterwards.

Hi there, Ellaskins. I retired from club DJing in 1993. To do a large tempo change, you can mix 2 records with one being mixed in on the WRONG speed (say 45 RPM if it's supposed to spin at 33.3 RPM). If you know the BPMs of both songs in question, you only need to know that the ratio between both speeds is 35%. For example, to mix from 135 BPM to 100 BPM cue the 100 BPM track on 45 (assuming that it plays @ 33.3), mix it in, and then cut the power on that deck (AFTER the mix is over) and let....

beatmatching is not the only way to mix? right, so records dont need to be in time? if the video is aimed at a mobile dj weddings, parties, fair ply! but if you wana dj, house parties, clubs etc.. u better be able to beat match. theres too many people who claim to be an authority in music and how to mix i.e whats exceptable in a mix and whats not. as long as it sounds good its ok! what he is doin is not being creative its basic!!!

the reason im asking why? is because why would i want to go from 1 genre to another? if at a different bpm, its obvious it wont beatmatch, so just mix with it where there is no beat. i dont understand, how thats creative? and another method? if im missing the point tell me!
