for safety advise, you should put a capacitor series to the red wire after the switch to the audio jack out about 10µf (really doesn't matter what µf, just letting you know this is common capacitor you should use or this). this is to prevent overload to the speaker you are going to connect to, or else you will have a risk of blowing the fuse or worse to the other speakers.
@hippopothomas19806 жыл бұрын

@@eusuh9380 Hey dude, I haven't actually added a capacitor - if you're using an Axial or Electrolytic cap then make sure that the negative side goes to ground and the positive to the signal wire on the jack 😊 Hope that helps!

you could've used a switching jack and avoid the switch. I did that to my Blackstar Fly 3. One thing worth mentioning is that these little amps use "full range" drivers and already have some sort of cab sim circuit built in. When you connect them to a regular guitar cab they can lack highs that have been cut twice - by both the internal cab sim circuit and the guitar speakers in the cab....in the case of Katana Mini, it might be possible to compensate with treble knob. My Fly 3 doesn't have one :)
@jayguitar6 жыл бұрын
Hey dude, thanks so much for letting ,me know 😊 I did consider that and then decided not to as switching jacks sometimes develop problems - wanted to have a physical switch as well, just a personal preference. Thats a really good point about the full range speaker. This one doesn't have a cab emulation going to the internal speaker, just when connecting the direct output/headphone jack. I haven't noticed any drop n treble on the Katana mini. It does have the treble control though if needed 😊 Thanks and have an amazing day! 😊

Love the addition of the switch! And man does the brown channel come to life in that randall cab 🤯 was thinking you may also be able to one up this mod by putting a stereo jack or something to deal with impedance in the circuit as well. Definitely making this mod to mine soon to run through 1x12 or 2x12. Good video and love the playing as well.

Great ! ...so why the hell they (Boss) didn't think about this option thus allowing the utilisation of bigger speakers if needed rather than the mini onboard speaker of the amp ? One could have opted also for a dual signal chains by means of two mini amps, one routed to a 2x12' cab and perhaps the second one to a 2x10' or even 4x12' with a tc mimiq at the top of the chain feeding two slightly delayed guitar inputs thus making the whole thing a lot more interesting like a kinda wall of sound. Just wondering why ...
@jayguitar7 жыл бұрын
Thanks man! Thats a great Q as well - usually it just comes down to cost and practicality. It would only cost a couple of bucks for Boss to implement in each amp but the you multiply that by the thousands of units that they produce, it adds up to a much bigger sum. The mini was designed to be a portable solution as well - just something that we could all plug into and enjoy on the fly, which i think it does beautifully :) And hey, its alway nice to be able to add mods and do stuff like that right? :) Enjoy and have an awesome day dude!!

im also wondering why they dont do those things but i think it has more to do with market strategy that they try to get away as little features as they can to keep the need for higher priced gear. They also have a bigger battery powered amp with wireless guitar connection but it doesnt have a speaker out or a effects loop wich makes no sense to me and its around the price of the 100watt head

+Jay Parmar Great idea! Similar to a project on my list, yes another bit of procrastination.... [Grin] I have a little behringer ULTRABASS BT108 that I want to run into my Carvin single 15" cabinet from back in my "weekend warrior" days. (They got my amp head when I got all that other stuff stolen) Since the speakers are the same ohmage, I plan on using "a normally-closed two-lug jack for simplicity. I can just plug into the cabinet and the amp will go to the Carvin (naturally with the power off). And, as you said, I'll also have the option of using a direct box if I get far enough to ever get my hand back in enough to record again. I've got a Rogue long-scale bass still waiting for its D'Addario ETB92 Nylon Tapewound Medium Gauge Strings. I don't remember who to credit for the insight but someone once observed (I'm paraphrasing), "The amount of time available will always constrict in direct relation to the amount of things you plan to do." I've had to learn not to sweat it and prioritize, do what I can and save the rest for later. I may be retired but, with an ever expanding family, plans change from one moment to the next. The amp and the mod sound great! Kudos on the steady hands... I'd never be able to film my solder work. My hands aren't as steady as they were. That's why I decided to go with Sigler Music's "Modern ES-335" wiring for my new build, quality parts and I only have to rework whatever wiring that needs moved around. The small stuff is already beautifully soldered for me. The mini DPDT toggles for the two single-coil/double-coil and in/out phase switch for my Carvin pickups will be enough of a challenge.... As always, great vid!

How many ohms is the 4 inch speaker? I think my 2x12 cabinet is 16 ohms... or maybe 8? At least it’s not a tube output scared so it probably doesn’t matter as much? I guess all that matters is that the switch can’t handle the amount of output from the katana amp output.
@jayguitar6 жыл бұрын
Hi Thomas, the internal speaker is 4ohms - my 2x12 operates at 4ohms as well so its a good match 😊 I was reading up on solid state amps and impedance loads and even with solid state, a mismatch can in the long term cause issues- but you know, its a little $100 amp so I'm not too worried myself 😊 It sounds excellent through the 2x12 and makes it a blast to play! 😃 Have an amazing day man!

@raindogred6 жыл бұрын
Well done, sounds great. I just wonder with these types of mods by driving a larger load, or wrong impedance speaker if you might be causing the amp ic to overheat, thus bring it to an earlier than normal demise? One way to check I geuss would be to open it up and have a look on the main board and get the chip number ( that is, if it is a chip amp and not discrete)..then could check the specs, and see what its rated output vs voltage vs power ..they usually give the number for 2,4,8,16 ohm or specify for example it can/should only be used with say 4ohm, or 8 ohm and will put XX number of watts on YY Voltage etc. It definitely doesn't sound like theres any impedance mismatch...but you never know???
@jayguitar6 жыл бұрын
Hey dude, thanks so much! You know, it probably does load the circuit more then it should but I kinda took a view on it - its a $100 amp so of me it was ok to do - and as long as the impedance is matched, the energy from the amp will output in the correct way and it will only ever output 7 watts total regardless of speaker size (hence their are tiny amp circuits out there) :) I measured the internal cab impedance and it was 4 ohms which is the same as my Randall cab as well so all good :) Yay! And it works well and feeds back and does all of those awesome things!!! Enjoy and have an amazing day! :)

You could do the same with the aux jack and an aux to 1/4 inch converter
@jayguitar3 жыл бұрын
Hey dude, unfortunately that wouldn't work for 2 reasons - the Aux out doesn't send the power amp part of the amplifier to the aux output (so you would end up having to plug into an external power amp to get any volume), and second the aux output has a cab simulator on it, which you don't want when plugging into an actual cab. Anyways, have a great day 🤘
@beakyturbot7 жыл бұрын
Why not use a switching socket so you only need the jack socket? Wouldn't plugging in the jack lead then automatically disconnect the internal speaker?

Hey John, thats a great Q and something that I had considered - but I recently watched an episode of Tone Talk with Dave Freidman and John Suhr and they were talking about the reliability issues with those jacks and how they preferred to use standard jacks and switches if necessary, so I went with the jack and switch :) Have an excellent day man!

Hi Jay. Great little mod! Did you get more volume overall out of the cab than the onboard speaker? I'm guessing not since 7 watt is 7 watt, and bigger speakers require more power to drive?
@jayguitar6 жыл бұрын
Hi Ben, thanks man! There is a perception of extra volume just because its driving a bigger speaker but its still only outputting 7 watts :) Yes the bigger speakers need extra drive but work fine with lower volumes as well - they don't start breaking up so amp does all of the work :) Hope that helps! @jayguitar6 жыл бұрын
Hi Tim, thanks so much and great point about the cab - the speaker inside is rated at 4 ohms (I think I measured correctly) and my cab is 4 as well so it matched well :) From what I have read recently about solid state amp, going above the recommended ohms of a cab will only reduce power and speaker of cab should never be under the ohms rating of a solid state. But worth checking out on the internet and doing some research :) Hope that helps. Have an amazing day!!! :)

Hi Jay, that is a great mod! I love you video and your genuine excitement! I just bought Katana Mini for my daughter and I am so happy it is modable, that is just a bonus. Total newby here and I have one question: when it is powered through Roland PSB-230EU (which consists of recommended PSB-1U) it has really loud buzz on crunch and even louder on brown channel when gain is used- more gain more buzz, mire volume more buzz. Clean channel is much better but buzz is still there.Guitar is connected to the amp, buzz gets marginally quieter when I touch guitar strings or grounding screw at the back of the amp. Guitar has three single pickups. Is this normal? Do you have the same problem and if you do, how have you solved it? Your input or anyone else's would be very much appreciated. Keep on rocking!
@jayguitar2 жыл бұрын
Hey dude, ah - noise issues! Could be a couple of things - might be the power supply itself. If the amp is quiet on batteries, then either the power brick itself, or the wall supply that you're plugging into could be introducing noise - I've experienced that myself many time. So, check if it is that by installing batteries and seeing if the noise goes away. Also check your guitar cable. I plugged in a very very very cheap cable a few days ago into one of my amps (just something that was lying around) - the amount of noise it introduced was unbelievable! Hence cable is no longer used! lol! Hopefully its one of those issues and it can be resolved. Hope that helps. Have a great day!

@jayguitar6 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much man! Yes, possible to do with a stereo amp as well - you'd need a TPDT switch (3 sets of connectors) like this one - www.parts-express.com/3pdt-mini-toggle-switch--060-520?gclid=EAIaIQobChMI-dCqoubY3QIVmMDICh3dTQl9EAQYASABEgI_dvD_BwE - and then decide whether you'd want it to go to a mono signal, in which case use a mono jack (both left and right going to the mono jack) or a stereo signal, in which case you can either have two moo jacks or a a stereo jack 😊 Hope that helps. If you do do it, I would love to see it 😊 Have an amazing day.

Couldn’t you put a 1/8 to 1/4 inch adapter on a speaker cable into the emulated out / phone jack into an external speaker?

Hey dude, thats a great Q - you could, but you wouldn't get much output - the emulated out is a very quiet signal so I imagine you'd just about hear it - its essentially designed to go straight into an audio interface which takes a lower output signal. But Boss seems to have made it super quiet! lol! You can check out how I process it on this video - kzbin.info/www/bejne/qGHbnmlrnLGLms0 - Enjoy and have an excellent day!!! :)

@@jayguitar Jay, do you think this would work well if I plugged it into my Blues Junior or Roland Cube 30 as I don't have a cab?
@jayguitar4 жыл бұрын
@@bungy007 Hey dude, you could probably do that using the headphone out on the Katana Mini into the clean channel on either amp. The Blues Jr and the Roland have pre and power amps built in so you'd need to be mindful of that. The speaker jack that I installed on the mini sends the full 7 watts to a speaker which would likely damage an amp if you put that into the amp so I wouldn't recommend doing 😊 Headphone jack into clean channel is probably your best bet - as the signal is stepped down and then reamplified by the Blues Jr or the Roland 😊
@bungy0074 жыл бұрын

Can you plug this into a interface and how please? you rock!
@jayguitar4 жыл бұрын
Hey Aron, yes you can :) plug a 3.2mm audio jack into the phones/record out on the back of the amp, attach the other end of the jack to your interface input (you will need an adapter to 6.3mm jack) and you'll be good to go. The speaker output that I created will output too much signal to the interface and could damage it so that isn't recommended. Hope that helps! Have an amazing day!

Is there any bleed through on the internal speaker when it is hooked up to a cab? I did a similar mod and at high volumes there was a little bleed.
@jayguitar6 жыл бұрын
Hey dude, I haven't noticed any bleed on mine. If there is bleed then my thought is that the switch is cross talking between positions. I have had that happen to me with mini toggle switches previously :) Hope that helps and have an awesome day!

Jay Parmar Thanks! I was using a toggle switch. The bleed didn't happen until months later. Guessing I had a switch degrade on me.

Are you sure you can use the speaker output without damaging your interface on the long run?

Hi Peter, great point - I have been using my BluGuitar AMP1 direct out into my interface and it seems to have a similar output to the mini so I imagine it will be ok (been using the AMP1 direct for a year and a half pretty much constantly). But I do have a BluGuitar BluBox so could use it through that and then the interface :) Thanks man and have an excellent day!

@@jayguitar You know, with a good Greenback or something similar, just about anything'll sound good. I bet this'll turn out at least decent. It does make me wonder, though - can batteries handle having a speaker to power? If so, this might be something I could even busk with.
@JMartinN6 жыл бұрын
Hello Jay' just wondering you made this mod because you wanted a 1/4 plug? I noticed on my Boss Katana Mini there's an output for "phones/rec out cabinet voiced" only thing is that it's a 1/8 jack. I used an adaptor 1/8 to 1/4 and it worked.
@jayguitar6 жыл бұрын
Hi Martin, thats a great Q - well, the 1/8 inch jack is an emulated out so has a cab simulation and power step down built into it. Adding the 1/4 inch jack bypasses the cab emulation and sends the full 7 watts to the speaker cab that I'm using and also the recording software when I plug it in direct :) Hope that helps. Have an amazing day dude!!! :)

What's the difference between this mod and getting the katana head?
@jayguitar5 жыл бұрын
Many differences. The main one being that this is a much smaller, portable amp, runs on batteries - easy to take places, etc. It has less features then the head also, which I believe is 100 watts correct? This is 7 watts. The price difference is significant as well $100 vs $350 😊 Hope the helps. Have a great day.

But couldn't you just use the audio out plug?
@jayguitar5 жыл бұрын
Hi Jamie, no that won’t work as the power amp is bypassed on the audio out plug so there would be practically no volume to the speakers. It also has a fab emulation built in which you wouldn’t want going into a regular passive cab. If you’re gonna be using a powered speaker, like a FRFR speaker then yes it would work but again with the cab emulation engaged (there is no way to switch that off on the audio out). Have an awesome day 😊🤟🙏

@jayguitar5 жыл бұрын
Hi John, it has plenty of pep - probably not loud enough to be heard over loud drums or for a full gig (unless you mic it up in which case it will be). Its a blast to play though and does seem to add a little more volume, and the bigger cab adds a nice amount of punch and low end 😊 Enjoy and have an amazing day!

What if I use a 3.5 mm jack and a quarter inch adaptor and connect a cab with the headphone jack of the Katana
@jayguitar6 жыл бұрын
Hey dude, doesn't work as the headphone jack is set to send out a low volume signal. Also it has speaker emulation on it so that would be sent to the speaker. Adding the speaker jack allows you to send the full 7 watts to a cab, bypass the speaker emulation, and get the tone of just the amp through a cab 😃 Hope that helps. Have a grey day! 😊
