Easily explained, doesn't take a lot of time, gets straight to the point, this is the type of blender tutorials that I like.

Hopefully your tutorials start gaining some traction. There’s lots of good Blender content out there but I like your vanilla approach to these designs. Super easy to follow along with too

itd be useful to see the screencast keys. also at 3:00 ive seen a lot of people "steal geometry" to achieve geo like that, if you just make a loop cut and bevel, or make 2 loop cuts on either side of the ring, you can select the faces that make up the ring area, shift + d, right click to cancel move, p, selection, tab out of edit mode into object mode, grab the part you just separated, apply a solidify modifier and youre done, or go back into edit mode, select faces and alt+e to extrude along normals, then ctrl+b to bevel (obviously check and make sure your normals are facing the right way if extruding). just a heads up for anyone wanting to cut corners.

Agreed. Using your method would be more efficient and reduce poly count.

Hi Colby, great tutorial! Just a bit of advice, I would not recommend using subdivision surface so frequently here, especially to just to create slight curves and bevels such as for your handles. Subdivision surface exponentially grow your vertex and face counts, and this will cause the complexity of your model to go through the roof very fast. Instead, using proportional editing mode and/or the bevel function as required will be much more resource effiencient.
@colbyweaver8855

Noted. I would agree using the subdivision modifier is sometimes a bit overkill and inefficient. Thanks for the tip.

Quick tip for everyone: When modeling the handle, if you delete the bottom and the top faces before adding the subdivision surface modifier, it automatically straightens the edges; you wouldn't need to add extra edges and bring it to both ends.

I mirrored the cylinders onto the blade. However, when I Boolean the blade to the cylinder the blade disappears. Do you know how to fix this. It is making me go crazy because I am right at the end.
@colbyweaver8855
@colbyweaver8855 Жыл бұрын
I've had that issue a few times. You can try changing the Solver from Exact to Fast. If that doesn't work, go under Solver options and try turning on Self-intersection and/or Hole Tolerant. Hope this helps.

Good tutorial, good understandability except at 6:25, where I can't understand what your doing. I keep trying to extrude the face to the right, but when I scale it it doesn't scale right it bends the face downwards so I am very confused.

If you were to export this model, would you run into issues with all the faces of your separate meshes intersecting?
@colbyweaver8855
@colbyweaver8855 2 жыл бұрын
You need to apply all your modifiers, then join everything with CTRL+J. I exported the sword like that and didn't run into any problems. Not sure if any problems would arise in Unity or Unreal Engine.

So I'm trying to make the blade edge but I can't get it to taper. You have all edges on the x axis selected right?
@colbyweaver8855
@colbyweaver8855 Жыл бұрын
Yes. I created an edge loop on the shorter side of the cube using CTRL + R. After that, make sure you’re in edge mode, (press 2 in edit mode). Hold Shift + Alt and select the edge loop. Finally, press S > X to scale on X axis.

Sorry for the late reply. Make sure you have the blade object selected, then add "Boolean" modifier in the Modifier Properties panel (Wrench Icon.) imgur.com/a/HqcLPOW. Hope this helps.

Colby Weaver im a complete noob to blender i joined a few days ago and i was wondering how you make it cone shaped?
@colbyweaver8855

So I pretty much took a cube and stretched it into a rectangle. After that, you can extrude a face from one end, then scale it down to a point. Hope that helps

Try moving your object into different spots while it’s touching the blade. The Boolean modifier sometimes doesn’t work the way you want it to.

X, Y, or Z is used to specify which direction you want your object to move in. Otherwise, you wouldn’t be able to control the exact position of your object.
