How to mount a flag to truck bed

Hey guys. A lot of you have pointed out that the flag in this video is mounted on the wrong side, per flag code. I was unaware of this at the time I made the video. The good thing about this build is that you can mount those base pipes to any location along the board.

This is brilliant! KZbin hasn't suggested this when searching for mounting flag ideas until I did a deep google search. In my research I've found Speed Poles $199 to be too damn expensive, and the $99.99 BadFlag seems okay, and then there's $40 Tow Flag Hitches, but for using this only once or twice a year, I can't justify the price either. Also, other youtube DIY videos show drilling into the truck bed, which I'm not a fan either...but this, now this is a great idea and it does look like metal from a distance! I do plan on driving on the highway, most likely top speed of 60mph, so I don't know if I'd go with a PVC type for the flag pole. Amazon sells a stainless stell Flag pole for $19.99 which I just might get with this set up! Thanks man!

Very cool. Where we live they don't fly flags on their trucks "only a few times a year" but all year long!

Guys flying the flag is a great. But remember if you do not fly it in the middle "IT MUST BE ON THE RIGHT". If you are confuse just put the the flag behind your right shoulder and always to the right of any other flag.

I want to mount flags on a Dodge W200 that Im getting soon and wondering how you actually got that plank attached to the truck? I must really see the bed of that truck to get a decent idea on making flagpoles but this is a pretty smart idea. Nothing permanent, just take it out and lay it in the garage.

What keeps the board from falling over? I know it’s wedged tight but is it also strapped to the hooks?

Not strapped to hooks. This is actually wedged into those slots so tight that I have to use another piece of PVC to pry the board out of there.

I guess it depends on how close you cut it to the measurements of your bed, but mine is really tight. I actually struggle to get the wood out.

I love this. A cheap solution that isn't permanent. Have you made any modifications since you posted this video? Have you hit highway speeds with it?

Phillip Boulais the only modification I've made in filling the flag pole PVC pipe with expanding foam to about the halfway point, starting from the bottom. It flexes less that way. I've hit highway speeds and it's held up, but I wouldn't trust it on a long trip.

Sean Nolan I though about doing that or some fiberglass driveway markers. the expanding foam did the job. filled the bottom half of the pole, so that only the top 4 feet or so can flex.

I am doing this with my truck. Quick question how does water work when it rains because you block a part of with the wood.

Logan Krebs the water can still pass under the wood. when I wedge the 2x8 down, it still leaves a gap between the wood and the bed of the truck. I've left the 2x8 installed in the bed in really heavy rain, with no issues at all.

MrRdm921 the board just slides into the slots in the truck bed. Most to all newer trucks have slots built into the bed already. I say newer, because I buddy of mine has a 95 Silverado that doesn't have them.

Ethan Travis you mean the slots that the wood is wedged into? If you don't have them in your bed, this build might not work for you. You can always try it without the slots, and just put the 2x8 where ever you think it'll fit securely, but I'm not sure you'll get a tight enough fit.

What material flag did you use? I recently did one with a cotton flag and it's ripping due to the speed.

Sean Nolan the flag pole pipe. this step is totally optional. I used expanding foam, and filled that pipe just over half way up from the base.

Depends on your POV of the flag in this case since it can be viewed from any angle, but it really doesn't matter since it's the only flag flown. If there was another flag, and this was being viewed from the tailgate as this video is shot, then OP would be correct in location. The union should be uppermost and to the flag's own right, that is, to the observer's left.
