The part of this video where you use the scale at 6:02 has been instrumental for me. Today I successfully mounted a gopro onto a belly of a q400 and flew across the ocean from Vancouver to Victoria and back. I didn't climb higher than 4000 feet and my speed didn't exceed 240 knots or so and I use the sticky mount straight onto the paint and later peeled it off with a credit card. My question is, after I've peeled it off, how sticky is the mount and can it be used again? I'm hesitant to use it on an exterior surface for fear of losing my camera but perhaps a lower risk position?

As one of the members of the world's largest Cessna fleet operator, (think 550+ red/white/blue airplanes), we tried the double sided tape method to support the Garmin Virb. This camera incorporates coordinates into the picture, so the camera must see the GPS constellation (read: wing leading edge) . After losing a few, we gave up on the tape and are awaiting a new, 'official' solution. To be fair, the VIRB, in its case, has more than 6 sq in of surface area. If you go this route, be sure to have a return address inside the case.

@fritzkatz 8 жыл бұрын
"After losing a few, "?? WTF?? Do your FAA contract employers know THAT? Anyway, why would you want a return address on a cheap camera that falls off an airplane and kills someone or dents a fancy car? Maybe don't attach a camera PERIOD unless its foolproof or has a backup cable Mr BFD 550+.

Hi Paul. Thank you for the video. I just bought a jobi mount. I think an interesting video would you interviewing the popular aviation youtubers like SteveKinevo (Miami), Flight Chops, CaptainMoonbeam, JerryW, GaryWing, Premier1Driver, to name a few. Some ride longs with interviews would be interesting. Thank you again for your informative videos.

I purchased the mount from "mypilotpro". I will try it out soon. In NE and weather not so good lately. It does seem sturdy and I plan to connect it to my tiedown eye. I plan to use a gimbal inside my cockpit with many different mounts I have. I use Gopro's and my latest is a Session5 it's really small, love it. Alos purchased a cable for inside mic sounds, looking forward to using that. Thanks for all your vids. Awesome.

I don't know if anyone will see this, but an additional option to add some security to keep the camera attached and protect the camera are "cages" made by companies like SmallRig. These are exactly what they sound like - a milled aluminum cage that securely holds the camera inside and protects it from bumps on the outside. They generally provide multiple mounting points and offer some additional points to attach a safety tether or to attach the camera in a different orientation. Reasonably priced also! I'm also a fan of purple lower-strength Loctite when I want some insurance that a threaded connection won't wiggle loose, but also won't require heating or crazy torque to get it to release.

I really enjoy (and learn from) your videos. Question? What does the FAA think of these cameras? Removing/replacing screws or suction mounts to attach (external) camera mounts? Liability if a camera falling off (considering the camera itself provides video proof) including injuring someone on the ground? What did you consider to be the cameras pressure at 100? 150? Etc... I know that we just can't toss something from an aircraft without FAA approval. External mounted cameras seems to be a grey area for me.

Thank you for getting back to me. When i get my own plane one day. I will Def get something like that.

Safety wire is not a bad idea, because those thumb nuts will come lose. It's just as easy to wrap them in gaffer tape, though.

I mount cameras external with screws. No way I trust an adhesive solution. Also, my interior suction cup mounts keep falling off. The best thing is to spread a little clear silicon caulk on the cup, but its a pain to get off again. I have continuing issues with both camera shudder and displays that roll to black. Anyone else with these issues? Whats the solution?

Probably been mentioned but remember that an aerodynamic antenna generally needs a doubler to beef up the foot print, so be very careful where you connect your camera, especially the ones that have a longer arm. Don't be surprised if your camera has gone along with a section of skin that has opened up like a bean can when you land- just saying. :)

Just wondering if somebody checked the maths. Is it really just 2lbs of force the mount has to withstand? I found a reddit discussion and plugging in 150mph (for a GA Single Engine) gets me closer to a bit over 9 lbs. Any thoughts? Here the link www.reddit.com/r/aerodynamics/comments/hcwe7h/calculating_wind_force_on_a_gopro_max_mounted_on/

In Europe, if you mount something to a plane, it has to be certified. If you don't do that and you have an incident, you'll not be insured because the airplane was not airworthy. Also you might get a fine from the aviation autorities when they find your footage online. Having sayed that, almost everybody just does it. But I work for a large historical flight foundation (25 planes, 250 volunteers) and the aviation pro's within our club who know the law strongly advice us never to mount a camera on the outside. Is this different in the USA or is it a grey area?

I don't think the use of a screw to mount the camera would be considered legal as it then would be considered a permanent addition to the aircraft.

The problem with outside mounts is making sure they are on a solid surface that has no give on it. Otherwise you get that jello effect. That's the key.

Well, the way you mount cameras does not take the airflow into consideration. No one cares about the speed, but the rudder efficiency is a critical point. I would not mount the camera anywhere in front of the control surface.
