Its not a multitrack enabled mixer ; you can record 2 channels, in your video mono 1 and 2 ( mic 1 and 2) The other option is to record stereo 1+2 which will be the master output of the mixer. You can’t record all of the individual mixer channels into your DAW separately, which is called multitrack recording. Reconsider the title of your video.

Thanks so much Jordon. You've been a huge help in my search for a mixer. Most "reviews" seem to be just advertisements for the mixer. You compare mixers and get into details. I do wish there were a reasonably price mixer that had individual phantom power switches for each mic. A really common setup to record stereo acoustic guitar is one condenser mic and one ribbon. Seems like you just have to have an audio interface for that!

This is a great video! Simple and to the point. I just picked one of these up for my home studio and I was a bit apprehensive going in. I'm still kind of an old school analog dude, so new tech, or the latest, always makes me think twice. My heaviest recording days were back in the mid '80s to the late '90s so things have sure changed. I'm now retired but I wanted to do some home projects and start recording again. Your video was a super help. I'm sure I will be ok! Thanks a bunch!

This is what, i mean principally, all recording musicians need man! I think the new content prime on tube is the comparison of the preamps of this kinda devices and the SC boxes. I'll vouch for a ready set mixer with solid AD/DA and the input craftsmanship, hooray.

Right, this the function called 2x4 USB-Audio-Interface. You can only record 2 tracks although the console has 2 more pre amps, with which you will not be able to record anything simultaneously along with the 2 previous pre amps. The title of the video is correct since "multitrack recording" refers to the recording of more than one track, which is precisely what this guy does. For this reason, the video lends itself to confusion. I have the Mackie Onyx16 and I can record at least 16 trax simultaneously in Logic Pro X 8.

Thanks. My main use for this mixer woud be songwriting and I typically use 4 inputs at a time. Keys, sound module,drum machine, and vocal. Then I may add a bass track after that. I've recorded to audio tape recording to save my ideas for literally decades. Having zillions of song ideas on audio tapes is a pain and I want digital format so I can easily name and find the song idea. Can I record more than one channel at a time like 4 onto a single a track or 2 tracks and capture all the sound. In other words, let's say I'm doing a gig and I've got 8 channels I'm running into the board. Can I record all eight onto 1 or 2 tracks and play back everything on those 2 tracks. I don't care about 1 track per channel. I just want to capture and save my ideas without having to overdub. I'll worry about daw recording later. So, I get it. You can only record two tracks at a time but can I load all the channels I'm using, like said, usually 4 at a time onto one or two tracks? I just want to save my ideas on reaper in this case. I hope that makes sense.
@kettnercreative

100%. By default, when you connect the Mackie ProFX10v3 into your computer it will want to record the stereo output (final mix). If you're wanting to save your ideas/concepts/sessions you can do that with this mixer and it will record the stereo output.

Great video! I'm fairly clear as to how to use USB 1/2, but I'm confused as to what the purpose of USB 3/4 is and how I can leverage that. I've been searching all over and hear some abstract descriptions as to what USB 3/4 is in that it is supposed to receive audio input from the computer, but using the button doesn't seem to have any effect for me. I'd love to see a demo as to how this feature works with some live example(s). Thanks!

Same here. I figured the button on the channel itself (21/22 on mine) switches between the USB signal and the 1/8". But I haven't figured out how to adjust gain on the USB signal out of the ProFX into my DAW. The level into the DAW doesn't change, even with the master fader in the ProFX all the way down.

Hi. Great review- thank you for explaining so much. I recently purchased a ProFX12v3 but find something baffling; with the To Phones/Control Rm button depressed, a guitar plugged into Channel One with the HiZ button depressed, and the GigFx engine turned on, all of the 24 effects are able to be heard on headphones EXCEPT Fx Distortion. I would like to do scratch recordings to my computer using the onboard distortion with the Blend knob, but the distortion isn't present when the To Phones/Control Rm button is depressed. I can't understand why all the effects are audible except distortion. If I disengage the To Phones/Control Rm button, the distortion is audible, as are any other of the 24 effects. I've tried every kind of combination of switches and faders that I can think of. Do you have any suggestions? I contacted Mackie support on their website but I thought maybe you could provide some insight. I discovered that I CAN get Fx Distortion to work with the To Phones/Control Rm button depressed. BUT.... to get the distortion to be present, the Blend knob has to be rotated past center, counterclockwise toward USB 1-2. The further the knob is rotated; the more distortion gain is achieved. The problem with this is: the computer mix volume is increased also. This seemingly defeats the purpose of using the Blend knob, which is: to adjust the relation between the computer mix volume and the guitar input volume- at least when a guitar player is recording using the onboard distortion effect. The only way to change the ratio of Gig FX distortion input signal to DAW signal is to turn the Blend knob to the point where you are satisfied with the level of distortion and go back to the DAW's software and make level adjustments there. The Blend knob seems to act as a gain adjustment- from clean to very distorted. This also contradicts what you said when describing the Blend knob- that when the knob is cranked fully counterclockwise, no input signal is heard. With the distortion effect engaged, the processed input signal IS heard. So weird that only the distortion effect changes when cranking the blend knob. None of the other effects are increased when cranking the knob to the right. It's like the other effects are routed differently. You would think they would all be routed the same way in the chain.

Dear Kettner Creative, I've just purchased the ProFx10v3 and after several days of watching tutorials I feel even more confused,not mention frustrated and a little bit deceived.I bought this mixer under the impression that it would assist in DJing with Ableton live.I would like to be able to preview and cue tracks in my headphones and then blend/mix them in with the track that the audience can hear coming out of the monitors hopefully whlist being able to also manipulate the frequencies of the the songs in my set.Nothing fancy or seemingly complicated..pretty straightforward DJ techniques.Still have been able to sort out how to do this but perhaps I'm overlooking/missing something...also is it possible to assing audio tracks in ableton to specifics channels of the mixer and if so how..right now it seems as if sound only comes out of channel 9/10 and even then only when the USB 3-4 button is pressed..if 9/10 are USB 3-4 then where are /which are USB 1-2? Thoroughly confused and frustrated please help.I just want to seamlessly cue/mix tracks as part of a DJ set and also manipulate a songs frequencies with the available EQs.I want some clarity on exactly how many outs i realistically have at my disposal and how i can use those to play a DJ set.I really would appreciate some help with this and thanks again for your time.

This is definitely not a DJ mixer. You have been given bad information. A lot of DJs will use a mixer like this AFTER their DJ mixer. DJ Deck > DJ Mixer > ProFX10v3 > Speakers. This allows them to add more inputs (client laptop, more microphones etc.), but this is definitely not a DJ mixer. You will want to look into something like a DJM-900 if you're wanting a proper DJ Mixer.

Hello sir, really nice video. I'm currently looking for audio interface/mixer alternatives for my home studio. The main feature I'm looking for, whether it comes in a mixer or an interface, is the capability to route at least 1 additional output from my computer back to the hardware. I mainly require this since I want to reamp tracks and a single 2 output from my interface is making it difficult. Being able to blend between zero latency recording and what's coming from the DAW is super helpful. It can be extremely frustrating to record vocals (for example) when you have a slight delay after running to the computer and back. This allows you to select what tracks you need to monitor (drums, keyboard, etc.) from your DAW, and have zero delay on the new track that you're recording from your mixer.

The usb out is before the main fader so that your mix is not affected by any fade in/outs during a live performance. The common practice is to set the level after the fact in your DAW using a gain plugin. Despite the video suggesting this is a multi-track recording interface, this mixer is more suited for either live use OR recording situations whereby the user wants to mix in analog on the console. This is clearly the case since the only channels that work over usb are the main mix outs (suggesting you are only interested in recording your mix, which again is something you might want to do when playing live).

Sounds easy but here it comes .... : I have an audio system which is connected to mackie's main outs with CANNON cables and goes to my SOUNDSYSTEM which i use for listening all the sounds with monitors. Mackie does this - it use Mic 1 to listen to the guitar and send it to Ableton inputs 1/2 and Ableton reads and sends them through outputs 3/4 to USB 3-4 which then send it also to mackies MAIN MASTER OUT but Mackie also sends Mic 1 to MACKIE MAIN MASTER OUT in the same time. Both Mic 1 is comong out from MAIN MASTER OUTPUT and also from ABLETONS 3/4 OUTPUT again to MASTER OUTPUT - and it becomes and endless loop of ugly sound which you cannot control ever. Please someone explain to me how can i play guitar on Mackie and use the effects on Ableton lets say channel 1 - and dont hear both channels in the same time looping and phasing and destroing each other in the same time. XXX I trieed endless possibilities and it always ends up that 1 - it takes signal from mic 1 which directly comes out from MAIN OUTPUTS on mackie and 2 - it takes output from ableton from usb3-4 (and i need to use ableton for the applied effect on channel 1) and it has always the two guitars together smashing destroing phasing and awfull microphonics ... What is the correct way to use mackie with guitar and use effects from ableton without hearing both mic 1 and usb3-4 in your soundsystem. Is there any way of sending MIC 1 to ableton and returning the output from CHANNEL 1 on Ableton without hearing it also from MIC 1 on the Mackie , but only from the returning usb 3-4 ? I even dont know if im describing it good enough but i spent 20 hours with 2 guitarists friends and we couldnt deal with this. Happy 2023

Hey I have a question. I only have 1 macbook, I'm running my V-Drums midi through Garage Band with Addictive Drums2. So i am getting 1 midi track for drums straight in Garage Band already. Now I have an 8 channel USB mixer as well, which I plan to connect to a live guitar, bass & vocal. Plus recording the V-drum midi channel simultaneously, which i think doesn't need to go through the mixer? Thank you.

Unfortunately you can't multi-track that many tracks unless you use a digital mixer (X32, QU-16, etc.) but that's a big jump in the budget. For your particular setup, you would save a lot of money by recording the drums through midi, use your mixer to multi-track guitar and bass, then record vocals after.

The panning is a hack/trick in order to separate the two tracks. The USB output on this mixer is stereo, so you can only output two tracks. By panning track 1 & 2 to the left/right we can separate them. If you want to multi-track drums, you will need a digital mixer or a 8-12 input interface.

From what I am observing, as soon as I turn on the USB 1/2 output in my headphones, the USB 3/4 output is muted (and vice versa). Is this a limitation of this mixer or I am doing something wrong? Would mixers with more inputs, such as 10v3 or 12v3 let me do the blending of two USB returns? Thanks so much!

What are you doing that you want to blend 1/2 and 3/4? On the ProFX10v3 you can do it if 3/4 comes in through channels 9/10 on the mixer, then you could blend between the two using the blend knob.

Two issues. While I understand your point about turning off compressor and FX, and EQ to neutral during recording, for vocals, it sounds bad to your ear when you do that. So I would suggest adding a little as a compromise. You would need an upgraded mixer to make it sound wet to singer, and dry back to computer with zero latency. I think that was a weak demo of USB interface and multi-tracks. This mixer as I understand it, records 2 channels (usually stereo mix), but can actually play back 4 channels (two stereo channels). This could allow playback of one track with a click/cues to control room on it, along with the music track of your own recording or a backing track, etc. This is a 4 channel multi-track playback capability, most mixers don't do this. So you have 2x2, 2x4, and 4x2 USB mixers in the market.
@kettnercreative
@kettnercreative 4 жыл бұрын
I disagree 100%. The monitor mix for the musician cannot be a higher priority than preserving the integrity of the audio recording. This is as harmful as sacrificing a FOH mix in a live environment for the sake of having loud stage monitors. People do it all the time, I just couldn't recommend it as a viable strategy to achieving a great recording. Locking in your recording with 3 band EQ and a one knob compressor would back your recording into a corner before it even had a chance. If the monitoring is that important, I would run a split and use two consoles. One to EQ/compress my monitors, one for clean tracking. There are many different ways to do this, but I wouldn't want to be married to a compressor for the entire editing process. For the USB playback, I don't focus on the USB 3-4 because it's extremely weak compared to setting up a proper mix in your DAW. Plus, I would never run a USB cable from a control room to a tracking room. I can't say that I've ever owned a 25-50ft USB cable. Maybe this is a blindspot for me, but running a 25' usb cable to get a better click seems like an odd approach. Assuming that your mixer is close to your computer, it's easier to setup your mix properly in your DAW, there's no advantage to trying to mix 2 USB inputs to the console when you can do exactly what you want (with more detail) in a DAW. If you use your DAW you can also save your preferences for future use. The blend knob is an awesome feature on this mixer compared to others in the same category, so I focused on that instead. In a live setting if you want to change your mix on the fly then it would be helpful for the 3-4 to be setup as a stereo click/cue track in Ableton/Logic and you could use 1-2 to run the back-track in stereo - That would be super cool, and is better than the mono solutions that most people use but that's not what this video is about. There are many people who don't understand how to pan/separate the channels when recording with this mixer. So I made this video to help them get the feet wet. Apologies if this was a little too weak for you. Thanks for the comment!
