Great vid. Both are good little mixers and each have good features that work for almost all applications (live, recording, streaming). IMHO, the Yamaha is a bit simpler to use for novices who just want to "plug and play" for streaming or quick karaoke session. But the Mackie just barely beats it out because it has a few little extra features, that give the user some extra flexibility if they need it. Both also have great quality sound and noise floor (good circuits and pre-amps). If FX are really important for you, then the Yamaha is for you (slightly better FX and you can tweak each FX preset to your liking). If EQ is important for you, then the Mackie is for you (each channel has 3 band EQ - and MUTE buttons). The Mackie acts as a slightly better USB audio interface for you DAW too. But you can't go wrong with either. Usually the Mackie is about $10 thru $20 more than the Yamaha (just because of the few little extra features). The value for both of these, at this price point, is a no brainer. Both have very good build quality. I say shell out the extra $10-20 for the Mackie, and read or watch a few of the vids here - to learn the little extra features that might come in handy for your application and use-case. BTW - I own both (and also the 12 channel MG12XU version). Also, the reason why the Mackie has a little extra features is because their models came out a few years after Yamaha's models. So Mackie had the benefit of seeing the feedback, and threw in the little extras. Nice video.

Thanks for this video. I went back and forth on these so much I ended up ordering the Mackie online and bought the Yamaha from a local store. After getting a taste for the Parameter knob on the Yamaha's FX section, that's the key winner for me. Without delay time control, every delay on the Mackie is pretty unusable to me. I'm never going to want long delay times unless it's sync'd roughly to the song tempo. And I'm just can't get short enough slap echo with the Mackie. The Mackie is going back. More robust power cable on the Yamaha as well, RCA inputs, mic stand mountable. Also not sure if the Mackie does this, but plugging in your phone or iPad with the Lightning to USB Cam Connection adapter feeds your iPhone audio right to channel 9/10. Super convenient.

Hi there. Basically the Hi-Z switch changes the impedance of the input in order to support passive instruments like guitars and bass guitars. Mackie offers 2 of these, so 2 musicians can plugin their instruments directly to the console at the same time and record using for example the guitar FX included in the software bundle.

One point- The yamaha One-knob compressor does add gain, but because of its variable ratio, you get more flexibility. Just ride the gain knob, and comp knob together and you can get softer compression or harder compression, I still have my old MG16cfx, that thing is so cool

Dear @kettnercreative, many thanks for your reviews! This is very helpful in finding the right equipment. Both mixers would be suitable for mixing 2x vocals and 2x guitar, with the guitars straight to the board if I understand correctly. The Mackie would have the downside that the vocals could not be compressed, is that right? The guitars would need to be on channel 1 and 2 where the compressors are, because of the Hi-Z pad. On the Yamaha, that pad is also available on Ch. 3 and 4. Now I am wondering if I will really need compression on live vocals. My thinking was that it could be helpful in case I am not always at the microphone the same way, or when I am clumsy with my dynamics.

You guys might want to read this... I'm only setting up to an iPad Air 4 with A/V dongle, powered USB hub and the single USB on the Yamaha better suits my simple needs. The missing mids on the EQ are of no consequence to me as one stereo channel comes from keyboard and the other would likely be a second keyboard later, then far to the right is the USB input anyway. Those are all EQ controlled at the source. The only reason you would need the upper and lower bands without mids would be to 'balance' the PA horns and woofers a little further when needed. Ie: I've seen professional audio engineers burn out woofer voice coils by mismanagement of not allowing bass to move the woofer cones to pump the vents adequately around the coils to cool them, because they had too far too much bass in 18" woofer cabinets and treated the 15" PA woofers like mid-highs with electric guitars! The result can be a complete wipe-out of lost revenue when having to replace all the burnt voice coils! Tweeters can be burnt out too (or blown... how many DJs have their finger ready on the mic mute button when a patron walks toward a PA tweeter!) So to have those on-the-fly high/low adjustments other than what the source already EQs would be sensible. I believe that's why they don't need mids on those channels. I can see where a video source containing screaming mid frequencies one might want to tone down yes as most happy snap videos come from awful smartphone microphones. Could move to another channel with mid EQ for that then switch back. I like the Mackie asthetics better, we're not in it for the prettiness though. For me, Yamaha for simplicity and reliability.
@kettnercreative4 жыл бұрын
I don't think I've heard of anyone trying to balance/tune a PA with a 10 channel mixer before. Those stories of guys burning their coils was most likely from mismatched power amps and poorly set crossovers rather than anything that was coming from their console. Most likely, there was bad wiring, or they were just over powered. Either way, the majority of these issues have been resolved with built in limiters and almost everything now being self powered and paired with a power amp from the factory. I've never heard of anyone needing to air cool their speakers by driving the low end harder before. Mid/high cabinets are sealed and there is no way that the small movement from a woofer could adequately cool a voice coil that is being over driven/over powered in a sealed cabinet. There's always more to the story with these things.
@Shaker4x44 жыл бұрын
@@kettnercreative They were older Peavy QW 2F speakers they drove them really hard in a rock concert. No they wouldn't have used a 10 channel Yamaha mixer lol, but the concept I mention is there. Granted modern speakers have crossover limiters etc. These were old school big speakers, not arrays or anything... But yep, all the voice coils were brown, particularly were the heat was most concentrated of half of the coil. They must have pushed mid-highs so hard, that without air movement they fried. I was amazed. They were using big Peavy AB amps. I doubt they would have noticed the damage occurring. Likely yes they were over-powering them in the higher frequencies (electric guitars). The old QW 2F had side vents as well as a center magnet vent. Not sure if they had changed since. You're right though, I don't think anyone here would run into these issues, but it's something to think about...

@AT-wl9yq2 жыл бұрын
The signal coming out of the guitar is probably not balanced, and the mic input on the mixer is. Because of the 3rd conductor required for balanced operation, its not electrically compatible with single ended equipment. You should try a direct box because it will convert the signal from the guitar to balanced and eliminate the short circuit. You can also try going single ended out of the guitar and plug it into a single ended input on your mixer.

Thanks Kettner !! Lovely videos !!! But... Do you really think that the DB button is the same as the Hi-Z? Are you sure? Do they have the same function and the same type of preamp? I really doubt it ... have you tried it? ... In truth, it is important to me, because it depends on whether I buy the Mackie or the Yamaha. My doubt is: "Yamaha + Direct Boxes ($$$$) vs Mackie with Hi-z ($$) Thanks !! a Lot !!
@AT-wl9yq2 жыл бұрын
Its not the same. A high z option raises the resistance on the input to make it easier for the guitar to drive it. The db button is something else.

Great vids! My hardest decision ever is whether to get the Mackie Profx10v3 or the Yamaha MG10XUF. Are Yamaha's preamps better than Mackie's?

Yamaha has slightly more gain that Mackie, yes.

It's awesome. I've only used it several times, but anything from Allen & Heath is typically "world class". I would say that it's a step above the Yamaha and Mackie.

Hi there, great video very in depth. The most I’ve seen and I have searched. Because I own the Yamaha mg10xu and I’m looking for help determining if I can use it to send some of my inputs to my sampler that is connected to it via fxsend. Is there anyway to set that up? The mackie looks like it may be better suited perhaps even using the inserts too. Basically I have a machine called the octatrack. It has. Some inputs and outputs. And I have other synths and gear. I want everything connected to my mixer but I want the ability to route any audio going through the mixer to the inputs in my sampler for sampling.
