These videos are very authentic and somehow arty, thanks for the videos. I have seen long ago wool dyed with Isatis tinctoria for blueish colour, Rubia tinctorum for redish, pinkish, apricot leaves for yellow and walnut for brown. Today is the first time i watch one of your videos, and I have to tell you how much i loved it, you have to know what a Lovely experience you guys create here So natural, So peaceful... I was looking to dye with my toddler, and I was amazed i just found the whole family collaborating in the process (just what i was planning to do) and it felt so good, so real, so joyful & that was exactly my goal, but i thought i would create that atmosphere by myself so to find you thought me more than expected, I feel really thankful for that, because it wasn’t just me, i had the chance to see how it looks, we had a great time together as a family (we already did the project)

Dear Billy, first of all I love your unapologetic approach to being an artist AND a mother. We need more women like you on youtube! I'm experimenting with pigments coming from different berries I found around the area I live in (Germany). I ended up with a LOT of pigment. Is there a way to store it to soak fabric in later? What do you recommend?

Helloooo. Thank you so much 🥰 I actually have dye a lot with berries but I would say that you can probably just store the dye in the fridge like most others.... and then just use your better judgement as to when it’s passed it’s best? What berries are you experimenting with?? 🍓🍇🍒

Would defiantly like to see what happens if you added a super watered down iron to it after. It’s given me the most beautiful navy grey blues from hibiscus that I can’t stop falling in love with

I’m not sure much would happen with an iron after bath but you can make an iron indigo vat which tends to give really rich deep blues.... I’m going to do a vide making and dyeing with and iron vat at some point ☺️

Yes I usually dry then iron then wash, especially with delicate dyes. I will have a think about a video on making dyes last longer 🤔 thanks for watching 🧡💜

These colours have lasted a lot longer than expected. I did a test and put some on my window sill in the bright summer sunshine and they didn’t seem to fade too much. Although some did fade a bit after a second wash. Some of my samples are in a box and I haven’t done anything with them so they are still as they were after dyeing.

Thanks for the camera info as I am excited and looking to upgrade soon. We are an international family, Jamaican daddy and me, from Florida but with grandparents from Cheshire - not far from Wales! I went to uni in Scotland and studied French....and my hubby studied Arabic there. Soon I am moving with our kids to Abu Dhabi to begin a new chapter of life where Kwame got a new job....I am happy to get back out of the US, and show my kids a bit more of the world, with frequent visits to France. It dyed blue but baking soda will do that too or lemon juice for pink 😊

Helloo ... which ones have you been trying? This does tend to happen especially with certain dyes. Have you been mordanting your fiber before hand ? I think this is crucial to help with colour fastness and there are things like iron (which is a mordant ) which can help but it will change the colours. 💗

@@billynou Yep the fabric is hemp/cotton blend. I washed it in the machine (I think) with no detergent but didn't scour it or anything. Maybe that's the problem.

You have inspired me to start my own dying experiments. I have loads of mint in my garden, so going to start there. Do you have any experience with mint or words of wisdom for me. Soya mordanted my linen today so have to wait a week before I start.

Oh lovely!! I have never tried mint but I am very interested in doing more natural dyeing with plants more for their medicinal qualities and I feel like mint would be a great one for that!. I’d say just go slow... heat it very gently ... good luck 🤍

Hi. I did the mint dye ( it did boil when I lifted my beady eyes for a minute). One batch I put a drop of rust water with and got a marvellous grey and the other piece I got a wishy washy green. I wish I could post a photograph up for you.

Can you save the water when you are done and colour some more fabrics later on? Or does it grow mold or something? 😅

You can save your left over dye and use it as an exhaust bath (which will generally yield lighter results) and you can store it in the fridge although I reckon the cabbage water will go stinky really quickly and they dye probably won’t be that saturated. It would be better with something like onion skins 😊

Hello ... I’m not quite sure what you mean? Red cabbage is a really fun vegetable to dye with and experiment with PH to change the colours. It’s not super colour fast but the more you get to know natural dyes the less that will bother you 😉

Oh gosh that’s really up to you but I don’t tend to use them more than three times, depending on what dye I have used. 😊

Hello 😊 it really depends on how you treat the fabric, what type of fabric it is and if you’ve mordanted it. I’ve been surprised at how long it lasts in the past. It will always last longer on protein fibers like silk and wool and like with any natural dye, the colours do tend to evolve and change over time 💙

Mordanting your fiber will help but also accepting that some dyes don’t last as long as others as part of their charm. When the dye is faded there’s always the opportunity to re-dye or over-dye ☺️

I think you mean “mordanted” ? It means to treat the fiber before dyeing to help the colours attach to the fiber ... hope that helps 😊

I swear the shirt I just bought was dyed with red cabbage... It turns pink when I sweat in it like litmus paper which is also made with red cabbage dye. And when I wash it, it's normal grey again. This is so shocking to me because it's not a hand made garment, it came off a rack at a hot topic. lol People should be warned, if you're going to sweat in it like a workout shirt, the PH of your sweat will cause it to change colors until you wash it again.

Yes ! So Interesting…. Often if you’re dyeing an old garment that’s been worn and loved … you’ll get much stronger uptake of the dye on the armpits 😆😆
