Most motorcycle only accidents occur in curves...but why? In this video I explore the 5 mistakes riders make when trying to negotiate a curve, a strategy to avoid making those mistakes, analyze 2 failed curve negotiations, and show you how I manage riding curves. There is a lot packed into this concise video. Remember to like, share, comment and subscribe if you haven't already done so. When you do subscribe, leave a comment below stating you subscribed so I can reach out and thank you. Thanks for you support and ride safe. Rick HDVIBE

You have some very good descriptions in your video. I can add an experience I had very early in my riding with some other people. I was moving just a little too fast in a right hand curve with oncoming traffic. I realized I had drifted a little left and was close to the oncoming lane. I hadn't really learned pressing which would have immediately corrected my problem. I was lucky I hadn't gone too far left and I realized if I did nothing. I would clear all the traffic. I thought about that long and hard and realized that pressing needs to become almost instinctual rather than something you think about after you need it. My 2 lessons here.: Don't try to keep up with more experience riders, and setting up for and pressing during the curve is the most important consideration..

Thanks for watching and commenting. These are all things you should have heard in your class. The press or counter steering is your friend on curves. Going a little wide...press in the direction of the curve to get that bike to lean more. Set up coming into a curve is very important. If you are already a subscriber to the channel...thank you. If you haven't yet subscribed to the channel I'd be honored if you'd consider doing so. Make sure to check out the Motorcycle Skills playlist. Ride safe and enjoy. 👊✌️👍

@@HDVIBE I did subscribe and will be watching all your videos in the upcoming days. They did go over everything you talked about BUT they only talked about curves and turns at slow speeds. I have done 1000 miles on my bike and 95% of those miles have been in town riding. I am very comfortable being in town. The 5% has been country roads that I’m trying to get more comfortable with. When I take curves like on a road that is 45MPH, I slow down in 1st or 2nd gear, thinking I have to. A friend followed me on the bike the other day and said I was sitting straight up taking the curve, so I know I need to work on my leans.
@HDVIBE
@HDVIBE 6 ай бұрын
@BikerChick000 Yes, you definitely need to get some lean in curves. Counter steering will make the bike do that, but you need to carry enough speed. Thanks for subscribing. I look forward to seeing your comments on other and future videos. 👊✌️👍

This is the second video that I am watching of yours and absolutely love this channel. I asked you a question in the previous video about which bike you would recommend as I am the 62 year old guy getting back in the saddle after a 15 year hiatus. After watching this video it got me a tad nervous about getting back on a bike as I only have about 2000 miles under by belt. I decided after watching this video that I am going to take the basic riders course again which I took 20 year ago and also the more advanced course offered before I do any serious riding. On a personal note if you could make a video that instead of explaining counter steering which you did at the beginning which was very informative, it would be much more helpful to me at least to have you explain that concept and demonstrate counter steering while are riding your bike which started at the 11:26. It's still a confusing concept for me and know important it is for our safety. Thanks👍

Another excellent video Rick. I still have the bad habit of sometimes not looking to where I want to go. Can you do a video about riding in the rain? Where on the road do we ride when it first starts raining and after it's been raining awhile? We also need to be reminded of the painted parts of the road can be slippery when it's raining. Thanks.

Common sense and muscle memory! SLIP is a good one. I’m 58 started at 6 on a Honda trail 50, have ridden all my adult life. Also, I as an ASI (ATV Safety Institute) Instructor. I must mention- I had a bad wreck 5/28/90, totaled my XJ750J Yamaha Maxim and knocked me. Out - at 3:00 am 20 feet down a ditch about 1/4 mile from home. Thank god I was not decapitated ! That was last day I used hard drugs, I have never ridden a drank at the same time-,prepare, proper gear ATGATT ( all the gear all the time) , ride, eat, ride , drink, sleep!! WV is a wonderful place to ride!! My wreck was in VA. That wreck saved my life! Quit drugs, came up here and got 2 degrees from WVU and have been a social worker since 1996. Keep the rubber side down! Cheers and Peace

Thanks for the note! I may have to get a trike.,diabetes has caused peripheral neuropathy making 2wheels a lil sketchy. Sold my old ‘82 Yamaha XJ750J I have had since 1983 and rebuilt3 times! Sold my KTM 690 Enduro (my Jeep of bikes) and the only V twin I ever rode a Yamaha 650 which I thought was way underpowered- spoiled by my hot rod XJ Maxim. So May have to buy a Harley Trike. Tried the CanAm Spydr- was like a jet ski, always felt like it wanted to toss me in turns. Anyway-see ya on the road one day, hopefully back in the saddle! Trikes are ok I think, never rode one. I was an ASI Instructor until Arch Coal put us off property. We had an AMA sanctioned hill climb there too. Anyway, thanks for turning me on to your channel. Cheers and Peace. And as always ATGATT and Keep the rubber side down.

Watched your video, had to subscribe. Bought a new HD Electra Glide Standard in 21 after being away from riding for 10yrs; wasn't happy that my skill level diminished as much as it did. Took the Ride like a pro course and that helped quite a bit. I find myself dragging my floorboards more often as my skill level has increased. Can you advise on ways to increase my lean angle? I'm 63 now, not trying to drag a knee just want to lesson the chance for the tire to lose contact with the road. I would also like to learn more about trail breaking. Thanks for the video.
@HDVIBE
@HDVIBE 7 ай бұрын
Thanks for watching, commenting, and subscribing. I'm assuming you are referring to dragging while going through curves at speed, not slow speed. If you are dragging through curves, that typically indicates entry speed is too fast for the curve or the lane position you have selected is not correct for the curve. I would suggest a couple of things...first try to slow more before coming into a curve...that will allow you to ride through the curve with just a bit less lean. The other suggestion is to take an outside inside outside lane position as you go through the curve. Taking this approach will straighten the curve a bit so you don't have to lean as much. Thanks for your support and ride safe. 👊👍✌️

Just asking trail braking is using the rear brake by making a turn, correct?
@HDVIBE
@HDVIBE 9 ай бұрын
Thanks for watching and commenting. Trail braking is a technique for using front brake when taking curves. This compresses the front suspension, so you get maximum traction on the front tire to take curves at a higher speed. As mentioned in the video this is an advanced technique that most don't need to employ when casually riding. What you described I would call dragging the rear brake. That technique is typically used when turning at slow speed as an aid to make tight turns when going very slow. If you are already a subscriber to the channel...thank you. If you haven't yet subscribed to the channel I'd be honored if you'd consider doing so. Thanks for your support and ride safe. 👊✌️👍

Harley Davidson "TOURING" bikes. Miss the word touring? From someone who has raced (1/4 mile, road racing) the geometry on TOURING bikes is set up all wrong. From the fork angle(rake and Trail) to lean angle and shocks and fork rebound and center of gravity, it's all set up to roll down your favorite interstate at 80+mph with cruise on and Gun's and Roses blasting from the speakers. Do not try to make it do something it was not designed for, it's too big and clumsy(yeah there are pro riders who do amazing things with them but you aren't one) and requires a very high degree of skill just to keep a sport bike in sight much less compete with it. If you want a canyon carver by all means buy one, HD doesn't sell them, and perfect your skills on track day at local track.

Thanks Dan for watching and offering your perspective on the topic. I certainly agree with your points. The perspective I offer in the video is not how to carve canyons etc, but rather tips to avoid making mistakes on curves when out on the road...these apply to any rider on any motorcycle. I'm just trying to help spread the word and help ours to be armed with information to hopefully be safer and more confident riders irrespective of the type or brand of motorcycle they may ride.
