I have to tell you I have been severely severely depressed. I moved 17 years ago to a tiny town in North Carolina away from my home state. For a while when I worked I have friends and connections. When I became disabled I lost all of them. Now I have no friends and no connections. I have my husband and my children. Other than that I sit home alone and I'm so lonely. When my husband and children are gone I sit and watch KZbin videos. I feel like you made this video for me. I'm much older than you but I really like you! great video, maya. i definitely agree. my husband, who is a super outgoing person who loves everyone and who everyone else loves, always says: "to be interesting, you need to be interested." it goes back to that being genuinely curious--you have to WANT to know people to know them. seems obvious, but people don't really try.

Fabafter5 I was thinking the same thing. I recently moved back to Toronto and I am inside the house, usually bed, all day. I have one good friend left in the city and she's busy with her life so I'd hate to bother her all the time. I get so much anxiety when it comes to going to events if I know there will be people there who I don't know. On top of my social anxiety, I've been suffering from depression for as long as I can remember, and it's only getting worse with the isolation. I look at Maya's life, through these videos, and I'm so happy for her. I'm also really sad because we grew up in the same area with similar backgrounds, and here I am struggling to even get out the house, never mind talking to strangers and building a brand.

nspfs You don't have to be super extroverted or have connected friends to start networking. Begin with a genuine interest that you have, knitting, dogs, soccer, whatever and start talking to people with similar interests. There are websites like Meetup.com, OneBrick.org, or professional organizations if you don't already know people. For those that are suffering from depression or social anxiety, you can start small. The internet is a big place and you don't have to even leave your house. Join a Reddit group, mommy blog etc. There are forums for people dealing with similar issues. You might be able to help someone else out and turn it into a real life connections. Finally, step outside your comfort zone. For one person that might be smiling or nodding to a stranger on the street, for others, it's joining an improv class. Build on little successes.

+nspfs I think that you have to look at some of her other videos. If you are alone or afraid to do something then maybe you should take a course in public speaking or what ever your fear is to get over it. I am a introvert also but I am going to take a course in Toastmaster and it is available all over the world you can look it up. It teaches you how to give the perfect speech and talk in public as well as to others.

tango2u Although public speaking isn't my favourite thing to do, it's not really the problem here. An introvert who suffers from depression and anxiety can't be fixed by going to toastmasters, but if that's what you need, I hope it works out for you. :)

BUSINESS CARDS! I know many people that don't like to make business cards because they a) don't believe they have anything to offer or b) don't find them necessary, but they are! This is great! It's hard for me to meet people in the real world since I work a 2nd shift job when most people are going home. I've also been a caregiver for my mom since I was 18. I'm 31 now and I have never been allowed to live my own life independently. I'm curious about people but that curiosity usually leads to jealousy. It's hard to plan and do things when you don't have control over your finances or are responsible for someone else.

What Ive noticed about the first tips is it only sets you up for people who will use you. Ive been like this all of my life and finally figured out that that was WHY I was ONLY attracting users. They will be the ones to accept help and talk about themselves easily so watch out!!

I used to make the mistake of feeling defeated .. thinking that I'd never meet "anybody important" because I was looking at the people out front. But truthfully the networks are made up of lots of "background" people .. and now I'm just nice to EVERYBODY because you never know who they're connected with and how they can help you and vice versa. For me, it's more important to have good true friends that I can trust and depend on, rather than have a big network or know a lot of people. When it comes down to it, knowing a lot of people can get you places in life but in the end you can still feel empty and lonely if you don't have a few who you can genuinely trust and know love you and got your back. I thought you were realllly out there when I first started watching your vids but I kept watching for some reason lol. your last couple of vids have really spoken to me....especially this one. you have a beautiful spirit! thanks for sharing your life with us and hopefully I'll get to meet you one day!
