Thais, I finally told my ex that i didn’t feel safe to reapproach the relationship at this moment in time, I told him last night. Immediately this cathartic sense of mourning came over me, but I’m still definitely feeling the grief. Realizing I’m afraid that I’ll never meet someone who wants the same things as me, I don’t know many people who want a corgi farm lol. But I’m proud of myself for finally putting my needs first. I guess this is the work…

I just ended a relationship with an outwardly dismissive avoidant. But beyond this it seems to have been smoke from another fire, one called covert narcissism. I know that narcissists lean towards anxious attachment, but this one was nearly textbook dismissive and consciously identifies with those traits. I thought that was really the problem and possibly solvable because of his admission to knowing these problems and he participates in therapy. But arguments were something else. Massive amounts of gaslighting, projection, a lack of empathy, and constant victimhood that held hands with a need to avoid all forms of responsibility. Arguments never solved anything because of this, constantly rehashing the same things. And then the dishonesty and lack of integrity began to be more obvious. Like a cancer, what I know we had agreed upon in the beginning about common values and needs seemed to be rewritten over time. This is the second time I've ended up with a narcissist, but my first time with a covert narcissist. The biggest issue I have now is to trust myself. My own decisions seem to be flawed. I'm successful in my career, well liked, empathic, and resilient. I was single for over a decade and enjoyed it, truly enjoyed it. My choice in friends is stellar. This is apparently like candy to a narcissist. So why, when my other decisions seem to be reasonably sound do I make the worst decisions when it comes to a romantic relationship? My failure to make the right decisions here haunts me, makes me want to withdraw from dating completely.

@@fian1286 I'm sorry. Mine was a week ago after almost 3 years together. The uncertainty about myself and my own ability to figure this out is what bothers me most. He can't be helped, and while his problems are extremely visible to me and solvable with genuine work and therapy, I wonder what my blind spot is and if my therapist can help me find it. For now just...in a bit of shock. Like me you probably knew this was coming. And while you didn't want things to end, you wanted them to change or even get back to where they were, you know you were unhappy and probably feeling lonely and insecure. And these feelings were probably used against you.

Yes exactly , word for word how you described it .it lasted a year and now that it is over everything suddenly makes sense. Also experienced avoidance behaviour in the relationship and it ended due to betrayal . How a human being can be so dishonest and deceitful is beyond me , but he will never destroy the essence of who I am. I just hope to learn the lessons to avoid this happening again . Don't be so hard on yourself and I hope you find someone who is deserving of you and the genuine love you have to give ♥

@@fian1286 Thank you. And I hope you do too. I had been without sex for a year, the avoidant part kicked in last January when things in the relationship became serious (we got engaged). Literally complained of low testosterone just like Thais said many of her male dismissive clients do. That was hard enough, but then other things like a shifting foundation (or lack) of integrity and then creeping dishonesty started showing up. He admits he sabotages good things and wanted help from his therapist not to do it with me. But at the end I confronted him about online profiles he was making on a dating/hookup app and well, exposed he did what a narcissist does, immediate self-serving angry outburst and discard. He knew I was done when I brought up the profiles anyway. It hurts and we had gotten a dog together he will keep and I'll miss her most of all. I can't have contact with him, I can't be around him. And I loved that dog. That hurts the most.

So basically I'm currently I'm in a "relationship" with a dismissive avoidant, i wrote it that way cause it honestly doesn't feel like one. We rarely talk throughout the day and we live 10 minutes away from each other but in different citites. I tried communicating how we're not communicating in the best was possible and honestly I was made to believe that there's something wrong with my needs and that i shouldn't feel what I'm feeling . A bird eye perspective told me that his characteristics sound like a narcissistic person . And honestly now i feel confused, let down, i don't know what's tight or wrong anymore, overwhelmed and just tired to feel or think cause i was so consumed by thinking too much. Now I'm even feeling guilty being back on dating apps

After months of more research, I finally got out 2 years ago. Now I'm struggling with ever trusting again, and here you are to help. Thank you so much for doing what you do ❤️❤️❤️

I feel like this is not acknowledging that we cannot meet all of those needs ourselves, that we heal from relational trauma IN RELATIONSHIP. through corrective experiences. The best we can expect is to lesson the void by applying this list idea. Not acknowledging that feels disingenuous.

Ok, I have something I would like to mention. The clinical definition of narcissist only applies to 5% of the general population. We all have narcissistic traits. There is a spectrum in humanity. The amount of people that claim to be in a narcissistic relationship is disproportionate to the scientific evidence. From my own life experience, half the women atleast, claim their ex husband or boyfriend was a narcissist. After a while, I started to wonder if they all had a relationship with the same guy. My point is, we all need to be aware how we categorize a relationship to demonize the ex and to be personally accountable for our side of the street, as well as to use the term as a catch all phrase, because it does have a specific definition and traits.. Just sayin
@Akayemiix3
@Akayemiix3 2 жыл бұрын
I do wanna say logically most clinical narcissist also don’t seek help. So the percentage of people are only applicable to those went into testing. There’s more narcissist roaming in this world undiagnosed. Just to be fair.
@bernardzsikla5640
@bernardzsikla5640 2 жыл бұрын
@@Akayemiix3 That's fair, I have read psychological research of 2%, 5% and 7% and even 10%. But these are all guesses. By the way the term narcissist is thrown around, it would be as common as sand, and it's not. It is a serious mental disorder that far outweighs the population %, because it is so damaging to the people in their lives.

Abuse is abuse. If it feels like abuse and looks like abuse and talks like abuse then its abuse, no matter what you name it or who it happens to be
@bernardzsikla5640

@@smonaful You are right, narcissistic traits are all abusive, but not every person that is abusive is a narcissist. That is stereotyping and misidentified of a group. It is not fair to stereotype in other parts of our society and it isn't useful to call anyone that exhibits narcissistic traits a narcissist.
