How To NOT Destroy Your Landing Gear

I really appreciate you covering this subject. I'm an old fart who only started RC flying 3 years ago and I still struggle with some landings. Part of this may be that my fleet of aircraft covers a wide spectrum and it's hard to "specialize" in one type of aircraft. But my mind also says that this could be good, as it teaches me skills on how to react to how any plane is flying. That being said, I've been really focusing on left-stick controls and I've also setup a "low rates" landing mode with increased elevator expo to help numb my tendency to over react close to the ground. Just when I think I'm getting better, I'll have a hard landing. But when I compare to even last year, I am getting better and more consistant. Some day I want to master the slip. We have a scale pilot in our club that does some pretty severe slipping with his giant scale J3 Cub. It's a pleasure to watch.👍👍

I got 45 years in my belt flying, and a skill 3D pilot, and an advance INAV pilot, and flying with Gyroscope is nice, even do, I do not use the feature often, gyro like the aurora, when tune make the plane look fantastic. Great tips you provided to the community. Love the video.

I am so impressed with your gyro analysts to all the haters out there way to go man!!! I love the feel of the Admral (Lemon RX) gyro in some planes like the Tundra and my Flite Test Freedom Fox, but I also love the feel of AS3X in the Timbers, and Carbon Z Cessna better. I like how you can use the Aux 3 as a remote gain on some of the Admiral or lemon RX's using the sliders on the NX10. I feel kinda spoiled being able to forward program all the AS3X settings i want and fine tune each axis. Flying your plane with the gyro totally off can be beneficial in how its truly flying and reacting to wind and stick inputs, flaps and flaperons, spoilers, and full span ailerons. Really good to see you break this debate down for some of the idiots that dont know how lucky we are to have the tech we do these days.

...as an aside to my last comment, i spent about 8yrs flying a Cessna 208 Grand Caravan in South Sudan and the Congo for Save the Children. I was constantly trying to improve my STOL technique but in a full scale aircraft you have so much 'feel' fed back through the controls, seat of the pants and visually cimpared to flying a model.

I agree. I flew RC first before I got my PPL. Flying a real plane helps me tremendously landing a model airplane, somehow I can translate (a.k.a feel) what I see on my RC plane into my fingers and my whole body

Almost 2 years in the hobby, crashed many many birds. Crushed, bent, many landing gear, retracts and static. Not a paid user of a certain simulator, I learned to land over many hours on PC. My fear of landing in real life was going too fast and passing my landing zone. I've seen this video and the logic never stuck. Today after many hours of practice, I had my first weekend of butter smooth landings. My RC buddies are happy that I invested in a sim, put in the practice, and applied it to real life. This video really encourages me to keep practicing. You will get better at it.

Appreciate the tutorial. I can't wait to try out some of these tips at my challenging spot. Its a nice big field, but the landing area is a tight parking lot with buildings at one end. Once I'm commited to landing, there's no pulling out. I love the challenge- not always the broken props so much 😊 I used to struggle with left stick control quite a bit. It was either throttle OR rudder. Had a hard time controlling both. I found that spending a lot of time taxiing my UMX around like it was an rc car, on a packed dirt patch of a ball field to keep the wing scrape damage down, really helped with left stick control. I did that on windy, or just crappy flying weather days. It helped my slip control a lot. Thanks again for the helpful videos 👍

What a coincidence. I went out today to a Tarmac airfield just to practice my landings with my P51d Cripes. Landing on grass was so hard without a nose-over. I thought it was bad technique. Simulators are great for stick movements, but not confidence. The only thing that will give you confidence is learning to appreciate being uncomfortable and being willing to push your own limits.

I kid you not - my V1200 landing gear was damaged/bent from having the plane use them by keeping the plane for a week on its gear on the ground instead of on its belly and that alone was enough to bend the gear LMFAO . Horizon should pay us a rebate for having to deal with that garbage landing gear

Holding some up elevator when the tail settles can help prevent it from ground looping, but you'll find that keeping it controlled with rudder will do a lot more for it.

Know your landmarks and visual cues. Judge both your ground speed decent rate by determining what spots to look for in your flying field. Do this consistently until it becomes routine.

Expo softens the stick feel around the center. It's primarily used to create a 1-1 servo response when working with servos that have big throws.

Love this! Another killer video! The stuff about gyro bitching is so damn true - it’s like laughing at a full scale Air Force F22 pilot because he uses fly by wire with input assist instead of flying with zero control assist like a douche bag bouncing around the sky twitchy as hell with any wind thinking they are better or more skilled than everyone else while they act like 5mph winds are too much. When I now hear someone at the field say something to me while bitching about my gyro use especially when they they have a modern scale like a Euro, I say “oh, so you must be new to flying scale/RC! Welcome! Considering flying without a Gyro is only letting you reach a small part of the possible full potential from your airframe and wind conditions, and considering the full size airplane is fly by wire, gyro assisted, and computer controlled inputs, it is a no brainer if you want to be more scale and push your currently basic skills to new heights- to get yourself a gyro - but welcome to the hobby and let me know if you need any lessons on how to fly like a scale aircraft instead of a toy..” Lol

Hi Jon, When you say Gyro, are you meaning AS3X or SAFE. I have found landing in SAFE to be difficult because it has been setup, out of the box, to stop you diving into the ground and the only way to descend is by reducing throttle. Therefore i always extend the roll amd pitch angles possible through Forward Programming. Are you doing the same. I also increase the gains in both AS3X and SAFE substantially for the landing phase and when flying with high AoA. I'm currently trying to improve STOL landing with my Draco but it doesn't seem to like slow flight! I'm experimenting with deflecting the ailerons upwards with full flap and downwards with takeoff flap but one has to be careful not to run out of aileron authority and differential seems to be particularly noticeable on the Draco. All of the above compared to the Skynetic Bison XT which I dont think you have tried yet - it has the complication of variable slats and it seens to be important not let them move too much. I have got through several sets of wings on my Bison! On all of them I've had to dismantle the slats to free up the hinges, otherwise the servo struggles to move them. Poor QC at the factory. If you have a moment, I'd be interested on your thoughts about Gyro in particular. Tommy

When we say "gyro", we're talking about the AS3X rate gyro system. If we say SAFE or self-leveling gyro, we're talking about SAFE. Definitely talking about a rate gyro here. We generally don't mess with SAFE, it's only activated momentarily if needed.

Low wing should be about a 40% throttle on landing approach. High wing and/or byplanes can land with dead stick throttle. Keep elevator flared on landing and gg.

Not sure I agree with the "trade altitude for airspeed" advice for the final approach. To me, a stabilized approach means maintaining a constant airspeed and sink rate throughout the entire approach until over the threshold.

The technique works I've been training with @twobrosrc and found my landings have improved a lot from when I 1st started. Anyone can fly but landing has a technique and with that, you can build your skills.

You can get a stabilized approach by keeping the nose pointed at the ground and gaining airspeed from letting the aircraft descend. Holding throttle isn't always advisable as it can cause an overshoot easily. But that's the beauty of aviation, there's many ways to approach it. So long as you're bringing the model down in one piece and aren't busting it up, use whatever approach works for you!

You’re talking about a much more sophisticated plane than a rc plane. There were no fly by wire on a WW2 airplane. Just the pilot and his skills 😊 I think Captain Sully who landed the plane in the Hudson said he could have softened the landing if not for the limitation of the fly by wire system.

I think the point you’re missing is technology fails. People should learn how to fly planes without the gyros. It can be done. Find the ugliest plane you can find like a ugly stick. Fly it on windy days, fly it on calm days and days you’re not so sharp on the sticks. That will improve your flying skills. Gyros decrease your flying skills because you become use to them and when it fails to work then what? I travel the country for work and you would not believe the amount of people who can’t do general math when I’m trying to pay for something. I’m sure they learned general math in school but don’t know how now because the computer in front of them does it for them all the time. @@BillCranford well depends on multiple factors like where you live! Where I live there’s a lot if wind throughout the day and it’s almost impossible to fly without a gyro. For stuff that Two Brothers RC makes, it’s also often impossible to fly without a gyro. With the CG so far back, the plane just doesn’t want to fly!

By "properly set up", surely you mean excessively nose heavy. Any aircraft benefits from using a gyro to stabilize for turbulence, and all model fighter jets fly demonstrably better with a gyro compensating for neutral or tail heaviness.
