HOW TO: Obi-Ani Spin (Lightsaber Tutorial)

If you’re struggling with the behind-the-back part, this helped me: You are making a CIRCLE behind your back. I understand the rationale, but I really wish tutorial people wouldn’t say “you’re putting the saber behind your back and bringing it around,” because that makes it sound like you’re supposed to stick it behind your head and then force it to your left side with a purposeful swoop. This is NOT what’s happening. Rather, just like you’re making a circle with the first flourish next to your body, you’re making a circular motion behind your back. Your wrist naturally won’t allow you to circle the saber 360 degrees behind your back fully, so when the wrist is near its full arc, bring the saber gently in front of you, so it circles up on the left side of your body with the tip of the saber going close to your right leg/foot on its way to the left side of your body. Also keep in mind that the difficulty of learning this is NORMAL. I also wish tutorial people wouldn’t keep saying how “easy” or “simple” this is. It’s normal to be terrible at something when you first learn it, and sometimes things take like a week or far more to get down. Don’t feel bad. I can do this spin, and have been doing it for about a year, but I was SO SO frustrated when I first tried to learn it. It’s not a you problem. It’s a human problem. You got this :)

Thanks for this video tutorial. I just ordered a saber so my son and I can have fun together. He's 5 and just now getting into Star Wars and his absolute favorite duel is between Obi and Ani. I realize this is only choreographed sword movement but the Obi-Ani spin you demonstrate is an actual striking and blocking movement in Filipino Kali. This technique is also seen in some Italian forms. To make your technique stronger, DO NOT OPEN your hand when spinning your blade as it makes it easier to be disarmed. Of course starting out will be difficult so you need to practice the movement slowly and speed up as you gain competence. Flexibility, strength and stability can be gained training your wrists at least 2x a week. In Kali or Arnis the torquing spinning technique is used to create speed and power either for a deflecting block/parry or slash and strike.

None of these techniques are applicable to swordsmanship lol. In actual sparring/fencing, doing any of this is gonna lose you the match. This is stuff that was originally made for film as choreographed cool looking moves. I am also a swordsman, and would never do any of these with an actual sword unless I just wanted to show off. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Great tutorial...the neopixel sabers are looking so real they can practically replace CGI...who'd thought, as a kid back in 1983 when ROTJ came out, that we'd eventually have realistic looking lightsaber's. Not Fluorescent plastic tubes with hilts or flashlights...Absolutely Amazing.

I practiced this with one of my swords (they are all extremely sharp). I already am an expert with swords, so I wasn’t worried about getting cut, but I should have considered that I might hit something behind me. I ended up hitting the 3 & 1/2 inch thick maple (wood) table behind me with my tungsten carbide broadsword and slicing clean through it. After that, I decided to do what I should’ve done from the start; do it outside.😂

I just ordered my very first lightsaber and I am super excited! But, I am ready to be try and be patient because I really do want to learn how to do this. It reminds me of when I did martial arts growing up and being able to combine those elements with something I love is pretty neat but I am just extremely uncoordinated and had a major accident a long time ago and I am recovering but I never give up hope and I think it would be so much fun to show my niece this because she's 4 at the moment but loves this game we play with her grandparents as well with flashlights light laser tag but light tag we use pillows for shields and armor lol 😂 but this would make Halloween go up by a bunch of levels AND it's something she can do if she likes a +1 version of light tag apologies for rambling but I am excited for my saber and I was able to comprehend this tutorial and I think I could probably get it within a week if I practice a few hours every day 🥹 but that saber looks gorgeous and dang is it bright!! I love that! My goal is to dual shoto spin 😁

started learning flourishes about a wk ago, so i at this point ive seen a ton of obi ani tutorials. love your vids! feedback for this tutorial: way too long. best ones ive seen are under a min. reason being is it loops much more frequently. learning bodily movements effectively requires rapid repetition. we wanna see it from start to finish as short, effective and frequently as possible so we can follow along and restart right away.

thats fair, but if i may add, some people cannot learn that way and need step by step guides in order to get the movement down. not everyone can learn from rapid shooting tutorials the same way and in some cases it can hinder a persons ability to learn it entirely. there are benefits to having short and long tutorials.

I bought a few cheap rgbs from dynamic saber, I was worried before getting them due to how mixed people are on them, but I can say I’m very happy with them, although I think I’m going to grab a neo pixel from imperial workshop next time I purchase one, because the Neo pixels look incredible. The rgb’s are great but the little ring shape that forms at the top is probably the worst part
