In this video I explain and show you how to do an oil change yourself DIY cheap and easy on Toyota Rav4 3rd Generation from 2006 to 2012. The Camry of this period had the same 2.4 engine so it's exactly the same procedure. It's very easy on these vehicles. If you have any questions about the oil change or the oil consumption problem let me know I have already dealt with it on this vehicle and I know what the Toyota Procedure is all about.

Your video is so extremely helpful. Thank you so much. My 2007 Toyota RAV4 with only 122,000 miles has been “losing oil“ but there are no oil stains on the ground or any obvious signs of losing oil. I take my car in every 5000 miles for maintenance. I was being told by Toyota that I would have to have a whole new engine that would be around $5000. I am going to check my PCV valve and clean or replace it and use that magic oil. Thank you.

Was the PCV blocked, how did you go, using less oil?
@LauraGrizoffi5 жыл бұрын
Nathan Croucher I haven’t done the PCV valve yet but I did used the magic oil. I did it just before needing service. I wanted to run it 1000 miles like suggested. I will hit the 1000 miles in 200 more miles. I want to see if that takes care of the problem first.

Toyota had a recall on this problem several years ago, as was probably talked about some where, sorry if I missed it. Even after I had 100k miles, they took care of it. Toyota made me do a test first, where they do an oil change and mark your oil cap, to make sure nobody tampered with it. When it was proven that the engine was indeed burning oil, they repaired it at no charge!!! You may have to bug the dealership about this recall. This was several years ago, and not burning oil since.
@LauraGrizoffi5 жыл бұрын
R Ber They were having me do the 1000 mile test also but when I called back to make the appointment to bring it in after the 1000 miles I was told that they would not be fixing it for free. I told him I bring my car in every 5000 miles so why wasn’t it taken care of in 2016 when the recall happened and he said since I was not complaining of any issues then that there was no need to do anything about it at that time, but now that it’s been over four years and I’m having an issue now they are not willing to fix the problem for free for me and quoted me $2000 to fix it.

I've noticed that the oil filter didn't come with a little gasket for the nut in the sump ? Some people recommend to Chang it everytime you do an oil change. But thanks for the extra info at the beginning about the valve was a good thing to know. Great video thank you 👍
@ModernDIYProjects Жыл бұрын
Yes, the "Crush Washer" as it is called, is sold separately. I don't always replace it. I only do it if I see that it's starting to leak. I don't like to stress the bolt when putting that on to crush the washer. The oil pan is made out of aluminum and is rather weak. A rubber O-ring or gasket (like American cars have) would have been a better idea in my opinion.

How to clean the PVC valve, do you have a video for this ?
@ModernDIYProjectsАй бұрын
Cleaning the PCV is easy. All you do it take it out, spray it with carb cleaner, put it back in place. That easy to do. No video required. If the PCV valve still rattles when you shake it then it is still good. If it DOESN'T, then replace it. Done!

Right into the crank case along with the oil. Leave out a little bit of oil so you don't overfill it.

Sir, I have 2011 rav4 which also consumes engine oil (approximately 1 litre after 3000 km). After watching your video, I changed pcv volve, but the problem is still the same. Whenever I remove the other end of the hose that comes from the volve and fits with manifool, there is a little bit oil. Any help?

Create a catch can to catch the oil instead of allowing it to go into the intake manifold. I have a video that shows how to do that. kzbin.info/www/bejne/r5vakoafiLtkiZo

You can do it without jacking, but it's a tight squeeze. This vehicle has good clearance. I generally prefer to lift it up to make my work easier.

Good video. I have a 2008 RAV4 Sport and I think it's burning oil. The oil light comes on 500 miles before the oil change is due so I have to add more oil in the engine. If I were to put in a new pcv valve, do I still have to take it out at every oil change time to clean it with carburetor spray ?
@ModernDIYProjects2 жыл бұрын
No, but it is a good idea to clean it every so often. Cleaning prevents it from sticking and allowing the oil to bypass the valve.
@amck722 жыл бұрын
@@ModernDIYProjects ok thanks. I will be doing mine today after I get the carb cleaner spray. It already feels better after I used the Seafoam that's formulated for SUVs with more than 75k miles. The extra step of cleaning the pcv valve should give it even better performance
@amck722 жыл бұрын
I ended up having to buy a Hexagon 7/8 wrench extension to get it off. The valve was stuck solid. I was able to clean it up an put it back on. I think I`m going to eventually replace the pcv hose and clamps cause a tiny piece of the hose snapped off at the tip due it being the original (I think).

@ModernDIYProjects3 жыл бұрын
You can also use Mineral Spirits, Mass Air Flow Sensor Cleaner, or Brake Cleaner.
@DanandJim12 жыл бұрын
Easiest way to assure best results is a new PCV valve. Cleaning doesn’t always get it 100% clean/performance. Check the connecting hose for cracking and brittleness too.

I have a 2006 RAV4 Sport. It was consuming 1 quart of oil for every 300 miles. Lately I replaced the PCV valve. That reduced the oil consumption to 1 quart for 350 miles. Please tell me how you use Marvel Mystery Oil to solve excessive oil consumption. 1. When do you add MMO to crankcase? Add immediately after oil change OR 1,000 to 2,000 miles BEFORE oil change? How much MMO to add to crankcase? 2. Since my RAV4 is consuming oil at 350 miles per quart, it means I have to add a mixture of oil and MMO to travel the 1,000 to 2,000 miles range as recommended in your video 3. How often do you do the MMO maintenance process? At every oil change or at set mileage intervals?
@ModernDIYProjects Жыл бұрын
If you are having that much consumption then this fix will not help. The point of the MMO is to unstick, sticking rings. If you are loosing a quart every 300 miles, then it is too far gone. You could try using a thicker oil as a band aid but its really bad at this point.

Is is regular oil or semi -synthetic ? Thanks for the video
@ModernDIYProjects3 жыл бұрын
I use regular oil but you can use synthetics if you like. This engine does not specify the use of a specific oil.
@DanandJim12 жыл бұрын
Look at the filler cap, it’s specifies 0W-20 or 5W-20. That only comes in a blend or full synthetic. Anything heavier will cause more problems than you will want.

I have a 2GR-FE 3.5 engine in my Toyota Aurion. As both the 2.4 and 3.5 are susceptible to sludge build up, I always use fully synthetic. I change every 7,500kms . I would recommend this for longevity of engine life.

On a 2011 Rav 4 they use a replaceable filter cartridge instead of the spin on type filter on the 2.5 engine. Why, I don't know. It's more of a PIA than the spin on filter.
@ModernDIYProjects5 жыл бұрын
I see other manufacturers doing this also and the only reason I can think for doing this is cost cutting. Probably cheaper to produce the filter without the housing but they make more money since they probably sell you these filters at the same price as the metal filter.
@stevensevek61514 жыл бұрын
The 2.5 four cylinder uses the same filter as the V6. It's the 2.4 four cylinder that has a spin-on filter which was last seen in the RAV4 in 2008.

My filter is stuck and can’t be removed!!! Please help ! I already drain the oil out 🤦🏾♂️🤦🏾♂️
@ModernDIYProjects5 жыл бұрын
Yes, this can happen if you tighten it too much. That is why I say hand tighten only. OK, get the cup that attaches to the bottom of the filter and see if that helps using that with a socket wrench to get it off. Or if still stuck, you need to get the pliers that are made for removing oil filters and try to grab it with that. Worst case scenario, if it's REALLY stuck on there, stick a screwdriver through it and use that to turn it. If you can't get your hands in there, then remove the passenger side wheel liner and that will give you much more access space.
