Hello! Someone pointed out that I reversed the written stances at 3:05. The visual is correct, but it should be left foot front in regular stance and right foot front in goofy stance. (I think that I was going to write back foot and got them mixed up. I hate using left and right when talking about stances in general because I think it’s confusing for a lot of people. You’ll mostly see “front foot” and “back foot” in my content 😂 Still, hope you enjoyed the video! Happy Ollie-ing

How do I get high Ollie’s while pushing my foot though because when I try to push my foot it only gets an inch off the ground
@SarahParkMatott2 жыл бұрын
@@opgamer9296 Hours and hours and months of practice is the real answer. Ollies suck because it takes a lot of time and phases to work through in order to get our bodies to do what they need to/be strong enough to do what they need to etc. So many things (touching the tail to the ground when popping, not bringing the back foot up, not actually pushing the nose forward, not bringing the front foot up to the nose at all--only the bolts etc) can all shorten the height of the ollie..so, it's hard to know. Often it's just needing more time to get our body to do what the brain knows it needs to...

Very true about really pushing the front foot forward. My ollie got WAY better last year when i was trying to learn "ollie norths". It made me realize how far you can push your foot forward before it goes past the nose, and how much more effective it is to fling your foot loosely, and straight, into your nose. It also helps me to watch my front foot. The back one just has to pop hard, so focusing on my front foot seemed to really help me understand what was happening with each ollie.
@Sgirl14413 жыл бұрын
Love your method steps, i agree that a lot of tutorials seems to miss steps. Something i have found when I'm teaching friends is having them pop the tail and land on the board without doing the whole front foot slid. kinda like a hippy jump with a pop. This helps get that ankle muscle memory without worrying about the whole front foot mess yet.
@SarahParkMatott3 жыл бұрын
That's great advice. I know exactly what you mean because I actually considered that for this method in the beginning. I did it quite a few times, but the only reason I didn't recommend it to a general audience is that it did seem a bit difficult with a chance of slipping. Even I slipped once. I would totally recommend it to someone who was really good at riding already though and super comfortable jumping on their board! 😃💪

Of all the tutorials on the Ollie, hands down, your video is the best. You are a far superior teacher. Your teaching method is infinitely far superior. It’s more technical and less flash and spectacle. Don’t defer to Braille, while AK is great for some things, he’s “spectacle” and less information. Just saying “first try!!!!” Is great for affirmation it’s not helping people who really want to learn the techniques. Why you don’t have as many subscribers as Braille is an injustice but I’m glad I found your channel. Thank you.

One tip i've learned is to pop with your toes at the center of the tail. I used to pop more toward the toe side of the tail (the pocket), and it made my board spin a little backside and didn't pop as hard. I'd say put it in the center of the tail, and work on popping straight down, hard (with bent legs) and don't try to do huge ollies until you can do relaxed, smaller ones. I too had to learn to pop my tail consistently before i could even worry about leveling the board out more fully.

I like the way your brain works. The way you analyzed the physics and modeled the slide action using your hand (around the 5:15 mark) is exactly how I figured it out and proved the concept to myself when I was working to perfect the ollie. When I try to explain these fundamental concepts to people asking for help most of the time their eyes glaze over lol. I guess some people see skateboarding as being special and exempt from the governing principles of the physical universe. However, no matter how non-conformist and cool they are, there are just some laws that they can't break, no matter how hard they try.

What I did was put the board aside and stand as if I was on my board ready to Ollie. Then I would practice a sort of lunging side jump, leading with my front foot. I was able to land on my first Ollie less than 2 hours because I’ve been watching tutorials and other videos more than I’ve spent time on the board. Videos helped me to get myself mentally prepared and boosted my confidence knowing the proper technique. I highly recommend others to spend time watching tutorials and tips to learn it right. Thank you for the comment! I do think time on the board is super important! But, I agree that doing it wrong for hours is not the best method to learn a trick. Even riding around on the board will help you get tricks because you become so comfortable (which is why I think board time is important. I think board time is more important than trick time lol)! And I definitely agree that watching lots of tutorials is a great help! Different perspectives are useful, but it also forces you to visualize doing the trick! And research suggests that visualizing a physical motion can be as helpful as actually doing it, which is awesome! (It's also helped me personally.) :D Congrats on getting your ollie too!!

Nice tutorial! I began to skate in June this year at 46 and watched tons of ‚how to ollie‘ vids. This is so well explained! What I also like is you wearing protection gear. It‘s so important for either saver skating and even for committing tricks, as it gives that needed confidence, which results in faster progression. One minor thing, though: At 3:05 you state that right foot is front in regular stance and left in goofy; it‘s the opposit =)

Thank you! I'm glad you liked the video. And I totally agree about the protective gear. I love wearing it. I feel safe and more confident to commit to tricks, but you also never know when an accident will happen, and I don't want to get injured. I want to skate forever! Also, thanks for catching that. For that reason, I hate using the words "right" and "left" foot. I typically use front and back foot. I'll have to make a note! :)

wow! I have watched all of Aarron Kyro's how to ollie videos, including all of the super slow-mo ones too, I still can't ollie (well, after practicing twice a week for months). Your video is refreshing and insightful! Thank you so much for making this video. I got stuck on rocketing part and now I can see what I am doing wrong. The push forward and down was the missing part.

I’m really glad to hear this video was helpful!! The push forward and down was also the part I was missing, which is why I wanted to really emphasize that here. Even after you know though, it can take a long time to get. The ollie is just that kind of trick. But you’ll definitely be a able to get it! Stoked this might help on your ollie journey!😄

Hey, Sarah, thanks so much for making this video! I've been going through each step individually and I can already feel more confident popping and landing my ollies. Super excited to follow your progress and content. Keep up the great work!

This is a great breakdown! I find the advice of " just pop and push towards" to be super simplistic, and doesn't really work, so breaking it down like this is great! I'll try it today! Thanks Sarah!

"make sure you can comfortably tap your tail on the ground and make aaron kyro proud" hahaha , that made me laugh :D thank you for this video!! i think your extra steps are the missing link to get my ollies right :) i definitely need more steps to "get" tricks and practice little aspects before putting it together

Same! The more steps the better. Seems to help my body learn subconsciously. I’m glad you liked the video. I hope your ollie progress goes smoothly too!

Hey, great tutorial. I'm an old git just returning to skating and could never really get a decent Ollie back in the day but you just had to figure it out yourself back then, no tutorials/videos etc. The extra steps you've added are a great help and possibly one of the best tutorials I've seen. I'm trying to take my time and not rush through them all but I'm pretty hopeful that I'll have a "decent" Ollie by the end🤞 (Bailed in a pool yesterday so chilling a bit today, hurts a bit more these days).

Hey thanks! I'm glad you liked the tutorial 😃 The extra steps still help me work on my switch ollie, so I know they really help! I'm glad you're back skating and taking your time. To me, the hardest part of skateboarding is actually being patient 😂 It's easy to feel rushed. Hope you feel better so you can keep skating!

Thank you! I'm so glad you liked the video :D It is surprising, right? I've found that skateboarding tricks are often connected in ways we don't always see right away, and they end up being so helpful to each other! :)

Both of the points you emphasized that other videos don't are precisely where my problem areas were. Today was supposed to be my rest day but damnit I'm gonna go out for a bit and practice this method. Thanks for the informative video!

Those methods really do work well, my ollies suck for 2 reasons - i'm subconsciously too afraid to lift my back foot up after the pop because i lacked the confidence to land, and because i'm quite tall and not too fit, i get super tired jumping and bending up my knees. By practicing simply jumping up and down on the board, i was able to get extra confidence as well as start training my leg muscles and improving stamina altogether, what also helps is doing a couple hippie jumps right before i attempt an ollie to kinda get in the flow, loosen up and get the back leg used to bending up without me thinking about it. Now I've only tried this for a couple days so ofc I still suck but i can already see the improvement, gonna stick with this method until I get it down consistently while rolling.
@SarahParkMatott2 жыл бұрын
Ahh I'm so glad that it's working for you, and that you noticed those details as well. Because it's exactly what I am hoping for -- tricking our brains into doing all the good stuff we need to succeed. Building confidence. Getting the feet up. Loosening up the muscles, etc. Hope it continues to help! 🙌 Keep shredding!
