My boyfriend worked at a storage locker facility that closed its office on weekends. Monday morning there would be two or three storage lockers that had been broken into and the contents ransacked with items missing from thieves who didn't cut the locks off but somehow got them open as if they had a key. Now I see why that had happened.

Most are like this, you really can't trust any "brand" they all basically outsource their locks to random factories who puts the internals inside of a blank with "brand X" logo on it. Some locks are better than others but you really can't take brand name into account no one really makes locks which are all amazing short of the higher end brands like Medeco. A good paddock starts at about $80 which will be shielded to prevent shims, has a few false set tumblers, and is more difficult to rake. There is a weird fan club related to locks and lock picking (not for illegal activities) but for the joy of doing it. You would be surprised how enjoyable it can be to pick your first lock and with time it becomes a lot easier. Many locks use the same internals or have the same design flaws making them easier to bypass, locks do not sell security, they sell the sense of security. They are meant to look strong and hard, but once you learn a thing or two you see it for what it is, a bluff.

Thats a good idea. Ive never seen a prepper channel go over bypassing security measures. I've been into locksport for a long time, here is a tip for shimming locks. Push the shackle into the lock while your trying to rotate or get the shim in place. Some times the locks have enough play in the shackle to push the springs on the retention points in. Makes for less stress on the shim and likelihood of tearing a piece off in the lock. Also lockpicking is not hard to get into. You can get good enough to pick most pin tumbler locks you will encounter pretty easily.

Awesome video, I have a bit of experience with picking which I think is a better method since picks are easier to make without tools and because it applies to not only padlocks but doors too. Also if the lock is on a tight chain there might not be space to slip the shim in. But I think its really cool that you used a can to do it. :)
@scottp300

Started to write that a good pair of bolt cutters would be a hell of a lot quicker. But when you mentioned being undetected, it made a lot more sense. Not to mention you can always carry around some light pieces of aluminum in you pocket, boltcutters are not only bulky, but a dead giveaway. Of course you could shoot through the lock with a gun like in the movies, LOL, which actually has a 0% chance of working.
@NeverTalkToCops1

+Scott P "you can always carry around some light pieces of aluminum in you pocket." You COULD, but who does that? I guess preppers carry half a ton of gear for all the silly situations they thing are survivable, only to soon die from starvation anyway. Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha.

Great basic info. Locks are obstacles that can slow you down in a lot of situations. A basic pick kit is very small and light, and a little practice will enable you to open just about any big-box store lock. It is actually easier and quicker to rake open that master lock than to shim it. You seem to be interested in expanding your survival skill set. Take a look at lock picking.

I have to tell you this was very helpful. I lost the key to the padlock that held my back fence closed. I literally was trapped in my yard because I could not find the key. I didn't have a pair of bolt cutters and i didn't want to buy a pair just to cut one lock off. I also figured eventually the key would turn up since I know I lost it somewhere in the yard. So thank you. Not only for the help but for education about how NOT secure these locks can be in certain situations.UPDATE: my master lock was smaller than the picture and a LOT older. In the end this technique did NOT work for my lock. (sad) There was just too much rust on one side and the arch was too small to work around. I did manage to get one side in but that didn't matter if I couldn't do both.. So it's off to buy a bolt cutter :(

Like you, I have not ever done anything illegal when helping customers. They were legitimate owners of the bikes and needed help. I did cut a lot of locks but also opened tons of combination locks with time, or made keys by hand, which was paid by the owner. Thank you for taking the time and helping those who really need this information. Peace and Salute.

Laminated locks like that can be defeated by striking both sides simultaneously with hammers. The laminations bend & the lock opens.

In the comments he puts "There is no reason to destroy a padlock." This way might. I was thinking using one hammer, large rock, etc. to strike down on the lock. This will either shear the latches inside or bend them enough to open the lock. Not necessarily quiet and it does damage the lock. But it does work. Trust me.Keep in mind, locks are only there to keep the honest people out. If someone wants "in", they'll find a way.

You're...NOT gonna come off as "an honest person"---destroying other's property? He's showing a SURVIVAL technique, merely--and, NOT "breaking and entering"? I've spent a few innocent nights (once, in a cousin's of mine, actually) where a...storm taken off (cousin's), a...window (unlocked) rolled up or, a...screw removed (padlock hasp) got myself some BLESSED sheltering (wintertime, twice). But, "blessed" via it's being...INNOCENT human "sheltering" for...a night, only? "No harm": getting through some rough times, obviously? Actually...(some other times) I've experienced some law enforcement as TRUE "ministers"? The absolute...LAST THING (homeless, or, whatever) one EVER wants to be about that is ACTUAL "wrong"? (Some things--matters as MAY BE wrongs--understanding people WON'T take themselves, as "wrongs": understanding...CIRCUMSTANCES, hopefully, yes?)

Locks are for honest people. But if I were the good Corporal I would cover the product's name brand so as not to enrage and have to engage the company's legal team.

Very interesting! I have a variety of padlocks and it's good to know which ones can and can't be shimmed like this. In 2 of the locks, the cylinder, rather than a spring, drives a captive ball into the indentation in the shackle. That prevents the padlock from actually locking unless the cylinder is rotated to the locking position. They also prevent the key from being removed from the cylinder when in the unlocked position.

Every time I see those useless wads of metal defeated... an old joke comes to mind... If a key that can open any lock is called a "Master Key", What do you call a lock that can be opened by any key? :) thanks for the demo.
