All the videos about how to give presentations I’ve seen are dead boring, and that’s just making me more nervous.
@archdynamics5 жыл бұрын
I once went to a great technical presentation, which was supposed to last 45 minutes. The presenter opened by saying: "If all you want is the end result and not how to get there, I will start with that and it will take less than five minutes. If that's all you need, feel free to leave after that." Then, "If you want a more specific discussion on how to get that result, the roadmap, if you will, I will be done in ten minutes. After that, you may leave." Then, "If you're a technical person, I will walk you through the details, which will take twenty minutes, all-in. After that you may leave. Finally, "After twenty minutes, assuming anyone is left, I have set aside the remaining twenty-five minutes for us to chat and to answer any questions you may have." The Execs left after 5 minutes, General Management after 10, and the rest of us stayed so we could more fully understand the new technology. No one's time was wasted, and the appropriate parties got the information appropriate for their needs.

It depends on many factors: presentation topic, audience, setting, program objectives. The first line of any speaking program is best when it gets an audience's attention without distracting from the coming program. The closing is best when it anchors the results. There are more than 180 video clips on my KZbin channel addressing various public speaking techniques and methods.

If I'm attending a presentation in a professional setting, and some guy starts his talk with a 3 minute long "interesting fact" or "fascinating story" instead of getting to the point, I swear I'm going to throw something at them.
@markpowell46157 жыл бұрын
It should go without saying (but I'll say it, anyway) that the 'interesting fact' or 'fascinating story' better be both relevant and snappy. The opening of your presentation is exactly that - the way in. It's not a warm-up act. You're not trying to soften the audience up (e.g. with a lame and irrelevant joke or some flattering twaddle about it being an honour/pleasure to be there); you're trying to draw them in and also let them know something about you - for better or worse, their sole guide through the terrain of talk for the next 10/20/60mins. This is not to say that getting straight to the point can't be effective. Of course, it can - especially in a short briefing in a meeting with a small group of peers. But at more public event, get straight to the point too soon and you'll find no-one's even tuned in yet! There's a 1-2min settling in period that can either be capitalised on or squandered. I think your first job as a presenter is to reassure your distracted (and quite possibly jaded) audience that you're going to be worth listening to.

I disagree. Granted the story has to be great, well said, and very compelling. When it is , it pulls me in. I find it boring when a speaker right off starts with 'today I'm going to be talking about.....'. I love a good analogy, story, anecdote, if done well. It personalizes it. I would say you're the only one that feels that way.

Never end with 'thank you'. It sounds dopey: what are you thanking them for? It deflates your 'take away' ending and converts it to a weak plea to 'like me'. Boris ended his first PM speech in public, a great speech, a very powerful defining speech...with 'thank you'. All the air went out of his balloon.

The problem is that, when someone opens with a story that is only tenuously linked to the presentation that is about to follow, then you simply know that they are just trying to attract your attention, draw you in and make you more interested. It is a technique that is so easy to see though and will only impress the more weak minded. You simply have to use more imagination to make it more engaging rather than using some less relevant waffle.

I strongly disagree with what I heard/saw as good examples. Here is why: 1. They were all (without any exception) cold, machine-like, tightly prepared speeches. Not natural views of their own, let alone their natural beliefs. Which creates a doubt in myself that should I believe in him/her? The presenter is rather a theater actor than someone I should believe in. 2. The entire environment and aids used to create a ‘belief’ and to catch the audience attention were in absence. It is like an actor/actress would be talking in blank or in a black hole. Does it catch my eyes and ears? No, absolutely not. Why should I listen at all? 3. You could feel the whole atmosphere in the room was cold. Machine like or man-made for this recording. Not real. 4. The subject of the opening and closing was weak, because I already lost connection with presenter before he/she started it. Especially the (probably Russian speaking) second lady, frozen to the ground. I do believe that this was an example of how NOT to do a presentation in terms of opening and closing. regards, 'New York'

Crazy thing. I love the truth no matter how it's presented. I am hungry for the absolute truth and that draws my interest every time. A lot of presenters are marketers fake and formulaic and they learn things to get people's attention but they have absolutely nothing valuable to say as far as truth goes. They have statistics opinions and pseudoscience but rarely TRUTH.
