I dunno how I got into this corner of the internet, but I've legitimately learned more in the first 4 minutes of this video than I have from like 30 hours of "artist youtuber content" I've been watching this month, so I must give kudos!

On the topic of scams, I recently saw a video that went over stories from the subreddit "r/scams" in order to teach the audience how to avoid these - the one tip I want to share is about being a commission-making artist and getting a scammer requesting art who has no intent to pay. If you work digitally, always add an extra layer on top of the screenshots you send the commissioner (of sketches and in-progress work, if you choose to provide this update service) that says "UNPAID" in big letters. If you work traditionally, you can replicate this effect with a piece of tracing paper that says the same thing, when you take a photo, or learn a teeny bit of photoshop just to add such a warning layer. If you explain that it is your policy for protecting yourself from scammers, 99% of people will be very understanding and encouraging. The ones who are not, you know you can't trust them! XD Good advice can be found in the comments on the "r/scams" sub-reddit, but be careful with your mental health and don't spend too long on Reddit! Less than an hour a day, to be safe!

can confirm, i got a ton of artists dm me and they all got blocked cos in my eyes they are just scammers and i cnt be sure that they didnt steal the art off some other artist. and if i look up for an artist myself i feel saver too

PLEASE DO NOT ADVERTISE IN DM'S FOR THE LOVE OF- this one time someone DM'd me and I decided to be nice and answer. We chatted for like 5 seconds before they asked about commisions. It was annoying, and not to mention, it made me think it's a scam. I tried to deny as nicely as possible, but they kept suggesting and pushing it. DON'T DO THIS!!!

OOOHHH this such a good vid, I'm fairly new with commissions so seeing these kind of videos really ease the tension and stress with the process. Your vid should've gotten more views tbh, it's concise yet still packed with information for beginning commissioners. Also I love your model, your style is so cute!!! 😍❤❤

Wow what a nice tips! but as a very closed introvert human i have alot more concern with the client interaction. I am more afraid to make a wrong words and drove the client away without me noticing but i also afraid to be a pushover and get scammed. Do you have any tips of how to notice the red flag early on or how to refuse politely? And do you have any tips on how to manage your work time? because it's very hard for me to move because i am a freelancer especially when i have that artblock.

Take this with a grain of salt because im neither an artist or someone who does commissions, but id suggest being just very clear about how you work, how many revisions you are okay with (and most importantly dont allow anyone to pay AFTER youve already done all the hard work, make sure they either pay you in full upfront or half before a sketch and half midway somewhere, do not allow anyone the opportunity to take ur hard work and Run) and if they have problems with the way you work then just politely suggest they find someone else

i'm curious, how do i do pricing when i can do a lot of art styles? i can adapt to several art styles so i often get confused on how to price it T_T
@KeiMidori_
@KeiMidori_ Ай бұрын
Price differently depending on the style! You can still apply what the video said about referencing other artists’ prices but do it for each style you offer. Like if you do anime art, look for artists who you think would be on the same price point as you, then find another artist for maybe realism, or chibi, or whatever style you want to offer. I’d say tho that you should maybe have one or two styles with specific price points for, then mention that you encourage asking you about any other style they might want you to do. One other option you can do is a “skeb-like” style commission that’s basically a “surprise me” commission and the client will give a character but won’t know exactly what they’ll get until after you give it to them. Either way, just make sure your samples reflect what you can deliver. Good luck!

Maybe pick one style you like best and can do best and go with that at first. Narrow things down so that potential clients do not get overwhelmed because they very well can, making them hesitant to comm you. Then with that style you can break things down to head shot, half body, full body, and full illustration/render (full background, character(s) as options.

I have the same question except it's for a friend who described themself as too skill-issue and too broke to switch to digital at the moment. So they're thinking of trying to sell traditional art like those "pay me and I'll draw whatever" people online in order to afford a tablet (while they also try to improve their skills in the meantime ofc). Employment options in-person are too distant and already taken, making their situation even more difficult. What's the ideal pricing for traditional art/paper and pencil drawing that's scanned and/or has a pic taken to be sent to a client? Also to the versatile artist, how do you adapt several styles? Any advice? I want to be a cameleon with art, too.

Awesome video!! A little question though, should I wait to get more followers on social media before accepting requests? Because I'm afraid that I'm not able to get commissions. (for reference I currently only have 120-ish followers on twitter and 700-ish on twitter)
