Deciding the perfect way to approach another person is especially difficult, as you really cannot predict what their reaction will be or if they will understand your intent. I actually hesitate less when it comes to approaching people, because it is so unpredictable anyway. So many times I have been wrong in my approach and my intent completely misunderstood. Sometimes you are just dealing with difficult people who are interested in conflict. I just try to avoid those people if possible. I struggle more with tasks because I know that the best way to do something has to exist, but can I figure out what it is? That's what slows me down. I am glad you got the thing done that you were thinking about. Sometimes getting it done is all you can do. LOL

+Sunshine Sounds of Joy Haha I just watched this video and took notes not just on it, but your comments! as they sum up some elements I never really put into words - I generally looked at procrastination as a wall of pissing myself off or disappointing me, or taking a lazier route even tho I wanted to do something more important or rewarding. PHEW I hope to put some of this to action tomorrow

ehm.. I just start drawing/doodling. I just forget the time before "starting" I zone out without any thoughts during trying to do work. I get lost in my thoughts. but maybe that's just because I have no motivation at all to do homework.... because I can get away with doing just a part of it. not doing it and passing tests without studying. and I work better at night and under a closer deadline

it's normal to be defiant against the orders of authority and when you start treating yourself that way - being angry or making yourself feel ashamed or giving yourself ultimatums - then you become defiant of yourself, and even small tasks can seem like huge impossible obstacles

I have been struggling with procrastination and poor punctuality for years. It has devastated my work life as well as many of my personal relationships. I have researched procrastination and how to beat it, often using it as a way to procrastinate more pressing tasks. I have never heard this perspective and I have to thank you. Your video has opened my eyes to the root of my chronic procrastination and self shaming cycle. I needed to hear this. I cant express my gratitude enough. Thank you for everything you share! Much love!

I like the videos. Procrastination happens because cognitive dissonance (read: conflicting ideas) have impaired persons clear judgment. One of the manifestations of this is the ability to concentrate. You can imagine this as your mind is making estimations how long a particular task will take and compare it to the (uninterruptable) time available in task domain and whether it exceeds your attention span in that domain. If things do not progress, you start to feel tired and start to think how you can use your time more productively. Simplest strategies to overcome procrastination: * time slotting - decide for next ex: 15 m (no matter what), you are doing your best to solve the task. Set the goal to "do your best", not "I have to complete". Depending on your attention span you can change 15 m. * divide & conquer - divide the problem into subproblems, solve them and combine to get the answer. Note, that problem should be divided until it is simple to solve. * wisdom - you need to learn how to solve the task (efficiently) and sometimes you need the right team, tools, and environment.

Great video, so many worthwhile points covered. I find "segmenting" useful. This is helpful if you just can't get started on a project but you know once you are into it you'll be fine. Segmenting is taking a task and breaking it down into smaller segments. And begin just telling yourself you'll start with one segment and do no more. In a creative field this can be just instructing yourself to write a few bullet points of what you wish to put into your finished piece and do no more than that. Once the creativity starts flowing from that one task, it's easier to continue on. I use this method for completing ideas proposals for clients which are usually a few pages long and seem overwhelming before beginning.

Stumbled across you through your funny vids. I was watching this one because I found the subject interesting. Procrastination is something I've struggled with since my teenage years. So....cruising right along....maybe learning a thing or two....then, a completely unexpected wash of intense emotion when you brought up unresolved shame and anger toward my father. So yeah, I think this was pretty on point for me. You've given me a lot of food for thought here, in how I view and understand this whole cycle, as well as some other unresolved issues. Thank you. I put the pro in procrastinate. Ironically that's a joke I learned from my father. He was very fastidious, as was his dad too. Perfectionists all the way down. Part of my personal issue has to do with the way he helped me with projects as a kid. He'd just do it while I watched, so eventually I stopped asking for help - and stopped doing things. In addition to procrastination I also pile up projects like a hoarder. If I always have something that needs doing, guess my ego will always feel purposeful...

I never related my procrastination to shame but after watching your shame video early and then this, yes that makes sense. Never being good enough was/is a way of life in my family growing up. Following a dream that wasn't Christian Centres was frowned on. My earliest memory of doing schoolwork with my mom was her saying "I am good at spelling why aren't you". Now I really need to take responsibility for how I address this shooting myself in the foot life I've built. The thought of finishing things can make me feel very anxious, but I always feel better when I do finish.

So... I think it's absence of perfectionism.... think about it... Reality is perfect at every fractal, even the daily basis of our bit of fucked up society... You cannot give the extra value to basic things thinking of fun... Which becomes to be far from perfect too, doesn't it?

I was talking to my friend about this recently and he admitted he was scared. I used to be scared until I realized I needed to think bigger if I wanted bigger. I never said I “might” do this. I always said “I WILL DO THIS! Just you wait and see!” Five years later my business is starting to take off. It’s funny because I had always lived by “believe in yourself and put forth an unreal amount of effort toward your goals and never give up.” Then I find you and that interview with that man who wrote that book about the miracle formula for success. It’s crazy but I can say it works! On the other side of fear, is success. 90% of the time it’s some sort of fear.

food for thought, more like a feast; there's so much communicated and so many concepts behind the source of procrastination. These concepts tease out self awareness at every turn. I believe one of the most important takeaway is that things that we consider crappy exist because we gain from them, in some way, shape or form. Excellent video that really gets you thinking!

Procrastination is like a drug for me. I actually feel this sense of relief, this release of anxiety, when I put something off. It's very hard to stop myself from taking that drug...The irony is, I feel incredibly empowered and relieved when I actually tackle the thing I'm putting off and get it accomplished. It's like, why wait for a steak dinner when I can have a bologna sandwich right now? Instant gratification, but it's harmful! I know it is! Your comments about being addicted to shame and/or anger gave me some food for thought. I need to roll that around in my head for a while. Thank you for everything!

Another thing I notice in myself, in addition to defiance and anger, is fear. Fear of doing it wrong, fear of others disapproval of what I did and how I did it, fear of being stuck doing it forever, fear of my efforts not being enough, fear of embarrassment. All this fear weighs down the mind and creates frustration and more anger. I end up stamping my foot and refusing to do something unless I verbally address my fear. "The only opinion that matters is mine. As soon as I'm finished I can do something else. There is no wrong way, only different ways, and they are all fine. Everyone else is human too. Maybe my mistakes will make them more comfortable with their own. This won't last forever, I'll see how fast I can do it and then be done. I am doing this because I want to and not because of what anyone else says." Etc. Etc. Etc.

Thank you for helping me find and understand some of the pieces to my puzzle of procrastination! I'm writing several assignments, but got sidetracked with trying to understand why it's so hard for me to finish anything that is education related. I become good at accomplishing everything else that needs doing, but homework seems to get the short end of the stick. I'm not angry with myself because I do believe that my role as mum, wife, business owner, home owner, are my priorities. But I do feel shame (and use the above as excuses) that I can't seem to get it together to finish my homework and graduate from my program. I would like to learn more about procrastination and already feel that "inviting" myself rather than demanding myself and criticizing myself will shift my reaction.

Hey JP. I just posted a question to you on another video. Just wanted to say that as a veteran of 30 years of spiritual and psychological work, you nailed procrastination. It's a battle between voices in your head, taking control of your inner Locus is paramount. Meditation is incredibly powerful when you take the substance of what you are describing in this video into it. Which voices are popping up? What voices do I want to listen to? Well done brother. Keep up the good work.

I am an artist. After a major car wreck I was not able to do my artwork. After 10+ years of physical therapy and relearning much of how to function with some forever disabilities, I didn't get back into my artwork. A HUGE void is in my life by NOT doing what I love. So, now, 30 years after my car wreck, and I am able to physically and mentally able to DO artwork something keeps me from opening the door to my self-expression. I just don't get it. Really. I was never a procrastinator before my car wreck - opposite of, in fact. Type A, push-push, do it, do it now! But now, what has not healed and why can't I find the artist that lives in my soul? I will re-watch this video as I'm pretty sure the answer is here. Anger? Shame? Addiction? Thanks in advance JP.

I love JP. I do. BUT Procrastination brought me here. The fourth watching in a row, pushed me to this comment. Hopefully the fifth watching of this will be after I get to work on the book!

I'd love to watch this video, but I think I'll do it tomorrow. Never put off until tomorrow what you can put off indefinitely.

I just discovered your channel. I have a college assignment to write and I just can't persuade myself to do it so ... I watch all your videos (two times sometimes because I'm French and my english is not really really good ... and no that's not just a way to justify my procrastination O:-) ) ... I just saw this video and I think that's a sign ;-) Just to say you're absolutely amazing and you really make me think about a bunch of stuff.

Good one JP! That's super insightful, I hadn't thought of procrastination that way but it makes sense as a good way to overcome it. Can't wait to have you on cam and my radio show! Speak soon brother
