LOL... I travel WAAAAAAY lighter than you. I'm pretty harsh. I went to the UK for 3 months and only brought one pair of shorts, one pair of jeans, one pair of hiking trousers, one pair of capris. All black! Oh, and black yoga pants. And 5 T shirts. I'm a nut. Also, I don't bring cute shoes. The difference is that I'm at least 20 years older than you... I gave up on looking cute long ago! haha

I 100% respect that!!! Maybe even 200%! I'll probably be there with ya in 20 years. Honestly, there are times when I'm like, why do I not just bring everything in black since it's the easiest color for traveling!

Aren’t nail polish, sun screen, lipsticks, foundation, gels and extra small hand sanitizers considered liquids? I always cram them in my 1 qt clear bag for TSA scrutiny but if I don’t have to, that would be great.
@MeansToTravel
@MeansToTravel 2 жыл бұрын
Yes definitely, all of those are liquids. If you’re flying internationally, then absolutely keep all of those things in a quart size bag, especially for your return trip where security will likely be strict with it. This video was filmed for a domestic trip, plus I flew with tsa pre check, so I didn’t need to remove my liquids from my bag. That said, there is always a risk (even with pre check) that the TSA will get more strict with domestic flights, so feel free to pack with caution and stick to a quart size bag only if that makes you feel safest and at ease! I’m currently in Europe right now for 23 days packing carry on only, but I brought a lot fewer liquids on this trip and decided just to buy stuff here.
@jaimetarne9436

Nail polish, has to be in your liquids bag, even domestically. It is a liquid. Even with tsa pre check, not all airports will have that and you have to remove your liquids bag. Info for your watchers.

I travel carryon only wherever possible. Often it’s not possible when flying from Sydney to anywhere because our weight limit is 7 kg and my bag is usually about 9 kg for a two to three month trip, but in the UK, Europe or US I travel with an international sized carryon bag and a small cross body bag. My tweezers and scissors get taken off me in Australia. My husband checks a bag so I have to make sure they are in his bag or I lose them again!
@MeansToTravel

So interesting to learn about the tweezers and scissors rules, plus the weight restriction rules in Australia! Bravo always packing carry-on only - I think we all enjoy having a lighter load when we are on the move! Thanks so much, Elly, for watching my video and being part of this community! 😀

I subscribed because I love your presentation! Keep going! My only question is: Shouldn't nail polish and eye drops be kept in your liquids quart size bag - and why don't you put those in your personal item? I would think it would be easier to pull out your computer and liquids bag from your personal bag rather than having to open your suitcase. Otherwise, I love the way you created this video. You have a new fan!!! My only additional tip is that I pack a pashmina in my carry-on (instead of a blanket) and a blow up pillow to sleep on the plane. I cant sleep on the plane without a pillow and mine is a long, lean-on type pillow - not the kind you wear around your neck. It folds to almost nothing in my carry on and with a window seat I can rest my head on the pillow against the window. I also have some amazing shoe covers that you can pull on over your shoes or boots to make them waterproof or substitute for rain boots. Works for me! I went carry-on-only to Scandinavia for two weeks and I'm a big supporter of carry-on only. It can be done and makes travel so much easier.

Welcome to the Means To Travel community! Thanks so much for subscribing! To answer your question, yes, nail polish and eyedrops should definitely be in a liquids bag if you are going through security screenings that require you to separate them. Sorry for misleading anyone! I have TSA pre-check and I've found that when flying domestically, I'm usually fine as long as my liquids are the correct size, but I'm 100% prepared to put them all together and run my liquids through the machine again if they ask me to! I admit that having TSA pre-check is a perk for situations like this, because I almost never need to remove my liquids and laptop (or my shoes). But I do think that the regular screening lines are different. Thanks for all the carry-on only tips! All of those are great, and I agree it makes travel SOOO much easier!

I don't understand why nail polish, sunscreen, face makeup, etc was in your carry on and not in your liquids container.
@MeansToTravel
@MeansToTravel Жыл бұрын
Yeah, you can definitely put all of your liquids into your liquids container if you're required when you go through security wherever you live. When I go through the TSA pre-check line in the US, since I don't need to remove my liquids, I haven't had an issue given they're all the correct size and would fit into a bag if I put them together. And if they made me repack them together I would do it in a heartbeat. That said, yes, if I was flying internationally or going through the regular security line, I'd just pack them in just one liquids bag together.

I thought I was the only one with a non-liquid toiletry bag. I now buy bar soap instead of body wash and use a tub of Palmer's cocoa butter or any other solid moisturizer instead of lotion in my non liquid toiletry bag. They don't show up as liquids through the TSA security and last me forever because they don't have to conform to the 3oz rule.

Yep! Here in the US they’re tsa rules and not airline by airline rules. But I’ve never had issues and the small size of those items are allowed. But you have to read the rules because for example you can’t bring larger scissors. So be sure to do your research for where you’re traveling!

I always keep my "liquids bag" in the personal item so it's easy to take out at security (in case there isn't TSA Pre). Isn't that easier than opening your big suitcase?
@MeansToTravel
@MeansToTravel 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah absolutely, but I've found in the US that I never need to take my liquids bag out since I have pre-check. So I'd rather keep it further from my tech stuff just to avoid any risk of leaks. BUT if I was in another country I'd probably consider relocating it! Good call!

@@MeansToTravel Good point about protecting your tech equipment! Honestly, that was a change for me when I went to using my new magenta hard side suitcase. Before that, I had a soft side carry-on, with an external pocket. I loved keeping my liquids in there because it was so easy to grab the bag out when needed. I do have TSA Pre, but occasionally I go to an airport that doesn’t have a TSA pre line, which is annoying!

Yeah I never have either! And I’ve flown from almost all the London airports, Manchester, Edinburgh, and Glasgow. My guess is that the comments were about those items being confiscated a long time ago when the rules changed around 2001, but the rules have probably changed back. But based on what others are saying in the comments, I guess Australia still doesn’t allow those items!

*This was comprehensive and fun.* 👍 *back sack* - Instead of a nice backpack I travel with a small nylon drawstring bag. Takes up zero space in my luggage. For daily exploring, I prefer it over the larger sling bag I use as my extra personal plane carryon. Perfect for my water, napkins, wipes, chopsticks, plastic utensils, mints, sunglasses, trash bag, travel notes, mini umbrella...ideal for the bare minimum.

*formal clothes* - Certainly if I have reservations to a restaurant with a dress code as well as the opera or symphony I plan and pack something dressy. That said I always travel with a blazer or sport coat anyway that I can “formal up” with dress shirts and ties in case I last minute decide on any of the above. So even when I have zero “formal” stuff pre-planned I always pack a couple of ties and a nice belt. A pair of 3/4 walking boots I use for my travel actually look like dress shoes...especially just after a good shine. (I also pack shoe polish. 😆)

Great video, thanks. However, with all your electrical and liquid items, doesn’t it take a while to search out those items when going through TSA? I’m about to go long-haul and want the best/quickest way to get at my checking items so am thinking having them in separate clear packing cubes at the very top of my luggage so I can just whip them out ready. I’m impressed with the amount of stuff you managed to pack.

Good idea! I have TSA pre-check and Clear, so I only need to remove my liquids if I'm at a foreign airport, but it's always good to have them in an easy grabbing distance just in case! And I've only ever had to remove my laptop at TSA occasionally, which depends on the airport.

Why can you not wear jeans if you fly standby?
@MeansToTravel

When flying with my personal standby pass that I receive from my best friend who is a FA, I’m considered to be representing the airline, and there are extra rules for that. But if a paying passenger tries to list themselves as standby to get on an earlier flight for example, they would be fine to wear jeans!

so happy to find you here.. and this video is just what i needed... I do have a question that i can not find answered even by TSA,, i checked so many airlines for this.I have a retreat for painting in ireland next year, travelling from canada, and i checked almost everyone on can i take my paints in a carry on.. its a long trip from the airport by train to a remote spot ... so using a carry on and backpack is perfect for the long trip... art paint is not on any list for hazzards, and its too expensive to ship, and loose.. nowhere to buy the paint when i get there.. sigh. almost want to cancel with all these new restrictions? sorry for the long post. can you help me?
@MeansToTravel
@MeansToTravel 2 жыл бұрын
Interesting question! I'd go directly to the TSA social media channels or websites with this since it's so specific. I just went to the Canadian site and typed in "paint" and got this result: www.catsa-acsta.gc.ca/en/item/paints-arts-and-crafts My guess is that Ireland's results will be similar, where they'll insist you include the paints within your liquids bag. I find that traveling abroad - especially to Europe - is much more strict about keeping all liquids to one quart size bag compared to what you see me show in this video for my domestic travel within the US. Depending on the cost/benefit you see with the paints, I'm thinking your options are either to bring them on the plane in a carry on within your quart size liquids bag, check your luggage and pay the extra fee as your "cost of bringing paint," or perhaps order new paints online to be delivered to you at or before the retreat.

Maybe someday! I don’t often travel on those types of airlines, but if I do, then I’ll def consider making that video! With that, my understanding is that the trick for traveling on those foreign airlines that weigh people’s carry on’s and have low weight maximums is that as a traveler you need to plan to do laundry every few days within your itinerary (which I admit can be quite a pain), and also perhaps budget for toiletries and makeup once you arrive so you can cut down your bag to the necessities! 😊

Isn't it easier to check your bag in rather than carry it on to the flight and have to lift it up into the overhead locker? What are the advantages to carrying it on?
@MeansToTravel
@MeansToTravel Жыл бұрын
Good question - there are several! Especially if you are traveling as a standby passenger like I did during this trip. First, you always have your bag with you in case of not getting a seat on a plane (this just applies for standbys or oversold flights). Or, if you have a confirmed seat, there have still been some horror stories recently about lost luggage. Secondly, it's cheaper to fly with a carry-on only since you do not need to pay the baggage fees. Lastly, it allows you to be conservative about the weight of your baggage so you avoid being overburdened carrying it from hotel to hotel throughout your trip!

Interesting. I have ALWAYS found that scissors of any kind in carry-on luggage are instantly declared to be prohibited - and seized and confiscated. Useless even trying. (I live in London, so I guess I'm thinking of what I've experienced here, though I recall a pair of scissors once being seized at an airport in the Caribbean.)
@MeansToTravel
@MeansToTravel 2 жыл бұрын
Yikes that’s not good! To be very specific, the mini scissors I mentioned in this video that I carried in my brushes/nail tools case are just tiny cuticle trimmers, so their blades are shorter than a centimeter. That size is supposed to be accepted in the UK and EU according to your security websites. I believe the issue you’re talking about is with actual scissors since there’s a limit on the length of blade allowed. I’ve flown thru heathrow several times with those cuticle scissors without any issues but feel free to avoid if it’s a worry or the rules change!

If you’re always flying like that you’ve been lucky if you’ve never been told to gate check that suitcase. If everyone traveled like that half the flight would be pissed because there would be no room for suitcases in the overhead. Does your suitcase even fit under the seat in front of you? because that’s the guideline. If you fly international just be aware you’re most likely overweight for your carry-on suitcase.
@MeansToTravel
@MeansToTravel 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Alexandra! This Tumi suitcase is 22 x 14 x 9,” which is the common size for international flying. Perhaps it looks big on camera because I’m 5’1.” I just got back from 3 weeks in Europe this week with this exact bag while flying standby carry-on only again (but, I did fly Delta, which is an important note for viewers to hear because US-based airlines don’t weigh bags - but Europe-based airlines do. Even Delta’s codeshare partners do, so I always book myself on Delta body planes as a travel hack to avoid gate checking anything.) The Briggs & Riley large tote always fits under the seat in front of me laid on its side, which I’ve demonstrated in the b-roll in my packing videos on this channel a few times. I caveated at the beginning of this video that I was flying domestically in the US, so that anyone watching from other countries would immediately know that this video might not apply to them, assuming they’re familiar with how much less lenient their local airlines are than American ones with weight, liquids, etc. (For example, European airlines operate on MUCH thinner profit margins than US carriers, so they nickle and dime their customers more on stuff like luggage weight.) After flying on codeshare carriers like Air France and KLM, I love that in America we have so much access to airlines like Delta, AA, Southwest, and United, which make traveling carry-on only sooooo much easier! I haven’t really flown low cost airlines like RyanAir and EasyJet since I studied in London in college, but to avoid any back-and-forth with those airlines, I’d probably just add into my travel budget to pay to check my bag before security in order to avoid any worry and stress on travel day. Hope you have a fun trip coming up soon! Happy travels!

Hey Ortho Diva - Ah okay, yes, let's chat about this. Yes, the Container Store labels this as a quart-size bag, but it is indeed questionable whether it's a true quart. That said, I have had zero issues flying with it domestically for yearssss! As I explained, this was a domestic trip. I admit that I have taken this bag in my carry-on at CDG and AMS, but I have not successfully been able to bring it thru security in the UK (at LHR or GLA). If you are going to Europe - especially without airline status - I typically recommend just buying toiletries there for the most part, or throwing a lot out before you leave. The other thing that I mentioned in this video is that I didn't have to weigh my bag since I flew Delta, unlike with many European airlines. Be sure to check whether you have weight requirements before your flight as well! Have a good trip! -Eliz

We’re you able to get things like your nail polishes and eye drops thru security without putting them in your 3-1-1 bag? I sometimes carry a very small portable steamer since I hate ironing clothes and obviously if flying international always take my adapter and converter (converter is for hair straighterner/curling iron). My adapter is 1 cube and each side slides out different plugs for I think close to 170 countries. I have it in a bright blue so I don’t forget to pack it when checking out of my hotel. I also bring a 10’ cord for my iPhone and iPad so I can charge and use it if the electric outlet isn’t next to my bed. I also put a dryer sheet in my bags to make them smell good and they help if you have static cling. Happy travels! 👍🏼😊

Yep, I always get nail polishes thru without any issues when flying within the US, but based on other commenters, I’m thinking that might happen because I have TSA pre check and do not have to remove my liquids from my carry on when I go through security. I’ve been flying very frequently without removing my liquids from my bag at domestic airports for about five years. If you know you’ll have to remove your liquids, then I suppose just make sure to pack them together with all the liquids you decide to bring (especially in a 3-1-1 if you’re flying internationally). 😀

Not wear jeans when flying standby?
@MeansToTravel
@MeansToTravel 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, since I am technically representing the airline and the employee (my best friend) when I fly standby, I opt for nice attire that's still comfortable to avoid any risk of them not allowing me on the plane. After the woman wearing leggings was not allowed to fly standby on United in 2017, I try to be very careful and respectful! 🙏

Holy macaroni, that is a LOT of stuff in a small suitcase! I wouldn't be able to get even half of that in, gotta practice my skills. :) (I am guessing you are quite a bit smaller than I am, though, I am 5'11 and have some extra padding too, haha!) In Sweden, you're not allowed scissors in your carry-on, by the way, unless it has been changed, but I don't think it has. :)
@MeansToTravel

Good to know about Sweden! I just went thru security at AMS and they removed my cuticle scissors (the same in this video) out of my bag and looked at them, but I’ve had no issue other than that. I think most countries allow them since the blade is less than a half inch long. In American security, it all depends on how long the sheer is. And yes I’m just over 5’1!”
@MeansToTravel
@MeansToTravel 2 жыл бұрын
Just googled it and it looks like Sweden has the same type of rule where you can’t bring scissors with blades longer than 6cm. Mine are nail/cuticle scissors so they should easily be fine because they’re much smaller than that, but I’m also mentally prepared to give them up if needed/asked. 😀

For me 3x clothes are bigger, more material, harder to pack. I should qualify for at least 22x14x9 and be able to freely use my expansion zipper! I was probably that size myself when I was born, that's not a real big case! I wondered if I couldn't use a duffle bag to get a little more stuff in my under the seat personal item, but I am not sure how to measure it exactly, and I would hate for them to kick it out when I get there, but I have seen some pretty big backpacks!

Nail scissors aren't allowed in carryon luggage in Australia, annoyingly I ALWAYS break a nail at the airport!! Tweezers are OK as apparently you can't stab anyone with them! Also even roll-on deodorant is considered a liquid here for international flights, domestic flights there doesn't seem to be much checking of liquids. For short trips that are carryon luggage only I use the 'rule of two' for packing, 2 t-shirts, 2 blouses, 2 travel pants, etc the only exception is underwear, a few days supply depending on the length of the trip. The idea of the rule of two is that you wear one and wash the other, I've done a lot of handwashing when travelling!

No way! I wonder if it was Australia and not the UK where I was thinking I had heard folks say that theirs had been confiscated. Such a bummer! I think it's really handy to pack my little nail scissors - they've even helped me cut off tags from new items. And yeah, I always have really bad nail luck when I travel as well, I wonder why that happens! I always assume it's a combo of the dry air and using my hands for luggage and tickets. Thanks so much for commenting with this info, and for watching!

Great tips for travel for two weeks or more. I like the idea of packing cube like travel bags for specific items for a trip within your carry-on or checked-in luggage. You tend to fit more in it. We do it too. Thanks again. Sending you lots of love 😍 Harriet and Jim . Richmond, Va.

Reusing your plastic shopping bags for traveling with shoes is a great way to protect the shoe from rubbing against the other items in your bag without adding weight, to save money on shoe bags, and to reduce plastic waste. In my other "how to pack shoes" video, you'll see I'm not exclusive to Target bags haha!

So you bring up an interesting point.... being on camera does make travel more challenging because my face has to be "camera ready". So I do have to bring enough makeup to paint and spackle. BUT I refuse to bring a hair dryer or a flat iron/curling iron. Every place I stay has a hair dryer. And I just have to live without any other implements!
@MeansToTravel
@MeansToTravel 2 жыл бұрын
Love that tactic. I think I've been bringing hot tools/dryers less and less over the years for that exact reason! I think the makeup is tough and also all of the camera equipment! 🙆

Haha yeah I've figured out over the years how to fit A LOT of stuff inside! If I go to Europe I wouldn't be able to pack this much stuff because a lot of the European airlines weigh people's bags, plus Heathrow is notorious for only allowing a really small amount of liquids thru security.

@@TravelAdventureswithEricB Yeah if you have clothes that you're willing to part with, that can be a REALLY great approach to save money! That said, that particular strategy hasn't worked out for me. Yeah it's tough, I feel lucky that America is much more lenient about how many liquids you can bring in a carry on, generally. If going to other countries you really have to do your research beforehand because their airport security rules can be a lot more strict (you're right, especially with makeup). How did you get away with the makeup and nail polish not being in your liquids bag?
@MeansToTravel
@MeansToTravel 2 жыл бұрын
You have the same name as one of my best friends from elementary school! Anyhoo...I've personally found that when I'm flying domestically within the US, the TSA typically doesn't mandate that all of my liquids fit within a quart size bag. Instead, they are very strict that all liquids must be in 100mL-or-less (3.4 fl. oz. or less) sized containers. That said, when I've flown to other countries (especially to the UK), I typically need to pack in only a small liquids bag. Security in the UK, China, and Argentina have been the strictest that I've personally experienced with liquids. When I went to China in 2019 they inspected every spray bottle manually and had to put a sticker on each one! Since I have TSA pre-check in the US, I normally don't even need to pull my liquids out of my carry on.
