I like to start with a line dance ;) hahaha jk. if I find a crowd difficult to read I've coordinated with the photographer to get a group shot right off the bat, and while everyone is on the dance floor just after they've hyped up taking the photo and everyone is cheering, hit em with a banger and then mix my ass off to keep the energy up for a few songs.

Nick.. what you said at 7:25 was probably the most reassuring thing I’ve heard from you yet. I’ve been a DJ for about 15 years. Thankfully I usually kill it at my weddings and other times it feels like no matter what I do or play.. nobody moves. It honestly makes me want to grab an XLR and hang myself. Glad to know I’m not the only one who suffers 😂

Priceless nuggets... My takeaway is mixing during dinner. I would jump in an pre-mixed set towards the end of dinner and throw in a more upbeat, toe tappin' sing-a-long stytle tune to get folks in the mood, then drop a banger to start the dancing. The Napkin Game is golden! Thanks Nick!

Great video as always. I agree mixing during dinner and cocktail hour give you a good indication how your night is going to go. When I have a rough crowd I tend to also use slow dance songs like classics like My Girl and then throw another newer slow song. After that I hit them with an upbeat song.

Great video! Your videos really for me act as reassurance that I’m doing it right. But that last tip, I use a party starter at every corporate and wedding. It works man! I get group pics of the entire crowd at every event. If I have an assistant I get in the picture too. I agree with mixing the dinner music but half the events I do, I do not have an assistant or 2nd dj. So in those cases I’m not mixing the entire dinner as I need time to eat. But if I have a 2nd dj I will definitely mix the whole dinner. It’s more fun for myself and the crowd, plus it’s great intel and people are ready to party by hearing me mix all night prior to the dancing portion. It really does prep the crowd! Also separates you as the dj from all the other djs they’ve heard.

I agree Nick that works great at private event parties like Bday, Anniversary or corporate parties. But need advice for midwest weddings where after dinner. We start the special dances and garter stuff. Then after that we do into dancing. So what do u think is a goood way to start without using a slide

Ben Boylan I explain how important dinner is to the client saying that dinner is a great opportunity to get the guests loose and feeling good and creating a perfect vibe etc and I tell them how I like to play dinner for all the reasons I talk about in the video. If the client says they still just want to hear a certain genre or list, then I make do but I still mix the whole thing and pick out the most sing a longable songs in that genre they want to hopefully get people going.
