BIG CHECK! Never EVER stuff the sleep system. You can only make it so small and it’s round and fucks up your weight distribution as things settle on the move. Don’t stuff it in the stuff sack, but make sure you bring the stuff sack in case you have to do a layout. You’ll get scuffed up for not having it if it’s on the packing list. Really great advice sir.

Always handy to have a few bags handy anyway, store a couple of hammock/tent bags in your bags sack, drawstring ones are good but I carry various bags for various things, mesh for tinder collection, peg bags handy to chuck a pebble in and launch a line over a river/tree branch, a thick fabric one could be used for filtering/water etc.

Great video, and coming from obvious experience. The only thing I would add is gallon sized zip lock bags for all clothing items. Being at Ft. Lewis and a rotation to Panama taught me this lesson. Even though everything is inside the trash bag, once you have to start digging into your ruck as it is actually raining things get wet. An additional bonus is you transfer your old funky socks/undies/t shirts into the now empty ziplocks to keep them from making everything else smell. Last benefit is you can burp out all the air and make things almost vacuum sealed for compactness.
@TimPopeamericathebattlefield11 ай бұрын
I have a cheap vacuum sealer and keep my extra socks, underwear, and t-shirts in the vacuum-sealed bags. They take all of the air out and compress down like a pancake. 👍

Excellent point about load balancing. (1) Warning: baggies with a slider can not be waterproof. I used two big bags: one for sleeping bag, and one for clothes. You can just pull out the top bag on put it on wet ground without messing with everything. Redundancy on the waterproofing: gallon baggie with socks/underwear/t-shirt so you only open one complete set at a time and even if inside the bag gets soaked your clothes stay dry. Put dirty clothes in mesh, not air-tight, so they don't become toxic. Army issued waterproof bag will leak (you mentioned that in other video) or let water ooze through slowly. When you first get it, put it on the ground and hold it up while you fill it with water so you know where to patch. (2) Keep the rain gear / poncho outside of your waterproof / garbage bag. No need to open it up when raining, and rain runs off the folded poncho and down the outer sides of the bag. (3) Twist the top of the waterproof bag, then FOLD IT OVER, then tie it off. My gear could float in Swamp Phase and never got wet. (Earned tab in '77, we used leftover Vietnam gear with outer metal frame. Afterwards, bought, still have, all my gear so I turned back in pristine clean, never used, issued gear without a problem - worth it!) Load Bearing Equipment / L.B.E. ---> Fighting Load Carrier / F.L.C. ---> Tactical Assault Panel / T.A.P. and I bet the guy who thought of each of those got an Army Commendation Medal / ArCom. P.S. Has the Army stopped issuing entrenching tools and bayonets? No bad guys will ever hit us with indirect fire or close assault?

Surprisingly this was an amazing refresher as it's been over a decade as a 13B who lived in the field and was remaking a bugout bag! This is 100% one of these best ways to load out your ruck, only thing I'd add is baby wipes as TP tends to go fast and take up more room + needs to be ziplocked for obvious reasons. Wet wipes are also great at cleaning yourself and easily disposable/biodegradable. Glad I came across your video cus you also had some amazing points, especially when it came to weight distribution and setting up your shoulder/back strap cus you'll definitely know if you did it wrong not even a mile in and you may not be able to adjust it on the fly!

Really good packing method. Agreed with the waist strap pointer. I'm 5'7" and tried it in upside-down position. It was uncomfortable that way after about a mile. So I switched back to original orientation and never had problems since.
@gunsmoke3301 Жыл бұрын
How much do you weigh? Seems like the 5’7” guys that are stockier do better with rucking than the lighter ones. I’m 5’7”, 140, I’m a great runner, but throughout my Army career I’ve always had major back and shoulder problems from rucking.
@rhysgoodman7628 Жыл бұрын
I’m also 5’7 around 140lbs, and I’m currently a civilian training for WOCS (I’m going through street-to-seat WOFT), and I’m in a similar position to you. I’m good at running, but rucking sucks a lot for me and I can never get it just right. My times are to-standard, but I’m always in pain in places that I don’t think you’re supposed to be in pain. My ruck packing and rucking form are definitely sub-optimal. Much to learn before shipping out to BCT and later WOCS.

OK, so you have one of the best, most clear, and concise videos out there, so thank you, and I have looked at HUNDREDS of them over the years. The only thing I wish SOMEONE covered, was the *other* essential gear for deep field time. The stuff that is issued, and expected to be used by a solder, but clearly never used in training/schools (as NOBODY ever shows that stuff in these videos). The canteens, the canteen cups, that whole canteen carrier (e.g. Does it go on your TAPS, the back of your ruck, or on the waistbelt of your ruck?). The IFAKs, the tents, the sleeping pads, the MREs, the Entrenching tool, etc. Even the small errata and miscellany: compasses, lights, and bayonets, etc. If you could maybe just touch on it here as a comment, a brief breakdown of what is individual carried, and if so how much (0 canteens? 1? 2?, 9 MRE's for 3 days? Case by case?) Do these things typically go on the vest/TAPS now, or just selectively chosen and hung on the Ruck? Do the Assault packs get loaded up too, and then placed on the ruck, or are they put on the lid empty, and only loaded up from things within the ruck as required? What is crew-carried split among multiple soldiers (stoves?), and what is expected to be dropped in for you at a base camp? Or are these things only ever rarely used? If you could just help people see what is a deployment load ("Pack all the gear, you're crossing the oceans, now"), vs. a genuine field load ("You're heading out for a few weeks") vs a training field load, vs a Mission load ("Shove magazines, MRE's, hydration system and fork into the Patrol pack and go!") and just how a soldier manages all the... *stuff*. Thank you!

99% of the Army has changed in the last 35 years. The woobie was then known as a poncho liner, it was not issued; most guys did not have them but those of us who did LOVED them. I had 2, one of which I had sewn into my rain jacket. Never wore my field jacket in the field. We had different sleeping bags. Stuff a woobie into a sleeping bag, strip down, and you could sleep toasty warm on top of a track in the winter. Greatest invention known to soldiers after the P38. Ruck marching was unknown then, as a general Army concept. Maybe the leg infantry guys did it in the field. If I needed to know how to properly pack a ruck, this is the only video I'd need.

Instead of a trash bag i would recommend a Kanoe sack as they’re a lot more robust and individually waterproofing items of kit with smaller kanoe sacks or clear resealable bags. It also pays to put your sleeping bag in the bivvy as if it does rain you wont have the fear of it becoming wet while removing it from the ruck. This is however from a british soldier and not an American.

Thank you for the great insights. I was always taught that one should load a pack with the heaviest weight at the bottom and as close to the body as possible. The idea being that this keeps your center of gravity low so you can balance an maneuver better. Also, legs are stronger than shoulders so this puts the weight more on your hip belt. For example, when backpacking your food is typically the heaviest item so you would put that at the bottom of the pack. Can you help us understand why you recommend that the heaviest items be at the top, "on your shoulders"? Thank you

It's better to have heavier stuff in the middle of the pack so to distribute the weight.
@jukkatalari38962 жыл бұрын
Heavy at the bottom is good on uneven ground, easier to keep your balance when walking thru some difficult ground. Heavy on top is easier to carry overall because you don’t have to lean as much forward to get your point of balance over your feet (same reason for keeping heavy items close to your back)

The weird rules about cold/wet weather gear the Army has makes me so happy I'm an airman, because outside of training the rule is as long as it's the appropriate cold weather gear for the uniform you are wearing you're good to wear it, regardless of if anyone else is wearing it as long as it's weather appropriate. I'm Security Forces so I spend a lot of time outside. My unit issued us both the rain pants and the cold weather MASSIF pants, even though no one else wears the MASSIF pants if I see the weather forecast is supposed to be below 30 degrees I'll wear them. Okay, where to put the full ballistic armor will be the question at the end from Ukrainian watchers. The answer is simple, it's always on a soldier. Regarding the clothes, my personal preference is a ranger roll. Each pair of uniform + socks and underwear is a single roll in a separate garbage bag to be double sure it's dry under any circumstances. All utility things from a jetboil and MRE to specific tools are separated into separate utility mole pouches. In other, following the same approach of packing, however, it's not a training mode but a real war environment. Because each mission which sounds like you gonna go for a few days to some positions ends with you living there for months and you need to take everything from your personal pack to chain saw. We don't have such a great supply chain near the frontline to have only personal bags. Also, you need a cat or as many cats as you can catch since tons of mice in tranches will eat your whole bag including the plastic frame, it's not a joke.

I've never been a fan of using a trash bag. They work great, but are too easy to puncture. I just stuffed everything in my wet weather bag. MRE beverage bags are great for storing anything you really don't want getting wet. They're durable, small, and most importantly, free. For my 5-50 cord I make a rope donut. It's compact and keeps it from getting tangled.

Have you ever trained in the Pōhakuloa Training Area on the big island? The lava rock sliced up my boots really bad. I went through a pair of jungle boots every time I went there.
