Love your enthusiasm. Get 100% cotton paper and mix your own darks. Dump the black and the white: your darks will sing!

Thank you! I do mix my own darks, Black is convenience. The white is gouache but I don’t really ever use it. It’s more for emergencies lol

How are you enjoying watercolour compared to oil? Watercolour is my favourite medium. You can also do your clouds by painting the sky blue (or whatever colour) and dab out the clouds with a sponge, or paper towel or your brush. Then add light shading if necessary. It gives a great effect.

Thanks for that tip about the clouds! I'm really liking it - the simplicity and quickness with which I can start painting, especially outside is great. Watercolor was actually the first painting medium I tried back in 2009/2010 and I did for a little over a year but then moved to acrylics and now oils. So I'm kind of just returning to it but definitely better at it than I was lol. It's a lot of fun.

I"ve found doing a watercolor painting prior to oil really helps. Try painters tape, blue or green, or masking tape, to avoid tearing the paper.

I'm using artist's tape. I think it's just crappy paper lol. I recently got some better sketchbooks with 100% cotton rag paper, haven't tried them yet though.

Would you recommend someone new to landscapes starts with photo reference or just plein air? These videos are so inspirational 🙌

Good question! I think a mixture of both is a good way to go. Obviously painting from life is quite powerful and mother nature is a great teacher but sometimes when you're just starting out, it can be pretty tough to replicate what you're seeing - the light changes so quickly, etc.. So I think creating some paintings in a controlled environment with photos and doing some slower paintings can be really helpful. Then using that practice and knowledge of the studio, out in the field to help you paint from life outside. Hope that helps.

What cotman paints do you recommend?:)

Av sna don’t use cotman, just get five or six core colours artist quality and it will be a true saving.....u will be able to mix colours and the paints will be super pigmented
