Hi, Aubrey, I've just finished painting my front door and architrave using your methods - including the numbered post-it notes. Mine were colour coordinated, too. It was my first attempt and I wish I could post a pic so you can see the progression. I'm really proud of it and I've had so many positive comments from neighbours and friends! I visited B&Q today to buy a sealant for the glass panel above the door, and showed a staff member a picture I'd taken on my phone, pointing out the area I wanted to seal. I also thanked her for her advice on the correct paint. She did a double take and asked if the phot was of MY front door. She thought it was an example from a magazine. I was very flattered. Thank you so much for such a comprehensive tutorial. I''ve subscribed to your channel and will be sure to check your methods as I continue my decorating. 👍😀

About the paint, is it water based or oil based, I'd imagine if it was oil based eg gloss you wouldn't use kitchen towel to wipe excess paint off stile edges? And water based is easier to work with.

😂most of us are on a hop up for the top rail. Great straightforward intro to panel doors. 2 tecniques I was taught were to strike in the eye level and handle rails before the top one. Starting in the middle with the paint over strokes from laying off the muntings and painting out both sides evenly. A sponge plug in the handle hole stops your paintbrush picking up dirt, and it soaks up any excess around the edge.

A lot painters have different ways. However that more or less the way I do it. But I would suggest bringing both sides down at the same time to keep your wet edges going. Good video. Part of my job is doing the painting in rental properties and i always find it interesting to see other people's way of doing things. The way you do it is the way my dad advised me to do it. One thing i didn't hear you mention is the other reason why you wipe the paint off any section you are not painting at the time is because if that paint that has run over gets any chance to dry a bit, even for 5 minutes, when you paint that section it will show up brighter because it has received 2 layers of paint instead of one, then it will be patchy. The thing i would have done though is where you go over on to a different section ie painting the top horizontal piece, where it goes over onto the vertical side section i would have wiped it off in line with the joint as the same as i mentioned before, if you overlap , the bits that have had 2 coats will be brighter than the rest

Thank you so much for sharing your technique. I have painted many paneled doors in my lifetime, but was looking to refine my brush technique. Since moving to in Georgia, I have noticed the heat & high humidity can really affect how the paint lays down, even if I add in paint conditioner (not to mention drying/cure times are very wonky!). I tried your method, and I got a fantastic result. Just switching up the order in which I painted the panels, rails and stiles really helped me brush faster, with more focus, and the paint laid down super smooth as a result. Thanks again!

Hi Kimberly, I admire your determination to achieve high standards with your painting technique. Glad to hear you have persisted and got the high quality of finish in your completed work. New to painting doors due to the painters I know are totally booked up Never realised how much preparation goes into painting a door Anyway, I kept checking your video each time, to make sure I was doing it properly with the 1,2,3,4 system I'm so happy now and (exhausted) Now to the next one. Only 11 more to paint 😱

Sir Aubrey, thank you very much for this well done tutorial. Could one use a brush to paint the crevices around #1, then a roller as the applicator for all remaining flat areas? And, what nap would you advise should a roller be used?
@AubreysAbsoluteDecorating2 жыл бұрын
Yes, you can use that method. A 4" microfibre mini roller sleeve works well.

I have a three bedroom house, the whole house is been redecorated, all the woodwork gloss needs to be keyed up, skirting, door casing, doors, I'm using 120 gritt by hand, at the moment, feels like hard work, going to use scuff x satin brushed on as the finishing coat , but is there a better or quicker method, maybe using a detail sander or a sheet sander, or is that going to over key it?
@AubreysAbsoluteDecorating2 жыл бұрын
You could try using a palm sander, they are a good size for this type of work. However, they can generate quite a bit of dust but you can connect them to a hoover. They do leave a very good finish and save a lot of time and effort. Hope all goes well for you Paul 😊

Thank you for showing us and explain with details. Currently, I have a very headache problem with my wood skirting which had painted with vinilex 5000 by other people. But now when I take over, I want to repaint it with proper metal and wood paint (nippon Bodelac 9000) but I don't know how to start? I wonder how could I make the old paint removed and when I apply new wood paint it will last longer and will not easily have scratch or stain over time. Thank you. Hope you can help me with some advices.
@AubreysAbsoluteDecorating2 жыл бұрын
Hi, I can see why you are concerned as the vinilex 5000 is an emulsion paint which is not suitable for use on skirting boards as it is not tough and durable enough. I would suggest using a 120 grade aluminium oxide paper fitted to an orbital sander (palm sander) rub down the surface of the skirting board. This should remove most of the vinilex 5000. If necessary use arougher 80 grade abrasive. Wear a mask whilst sanding. Don't worry if some paint is left in any grooves of the skirting board. as this will not receive any wear and tear. Dust off and apply one or two coats of oil based undercoat leaving overnight to dry between coats. De-nib lightly with a fine abrasive before finally applying a coat of the Bodelac 9000. Hope all goes well for you.

Hi Aubrey, great video you said you used zinsser 123 undercoat would it be alright to use zinsser bin as that is what I have or do I need to use zinsser 123 Thank you
@AubreysAbsoluteDecorating3 жыл бұрын
Hi Keith it all depends what paint system is already on the door and what you intend to apply over it. If the existing paint is oil based (solvent based) then you could just apply oil based undercoat and gloss over it. If you want to change to water based I normally apply 2 coats of 123 followed by either a water based satin or gloss. This system does give very good results. You could use the Zinsser bin for the first coat but it does not have enough opacity to act as an undercoat so you would have to apply additional coats of your chosen water based finish paint. Hope that helps 😊

I have a house of 15 panel doors to paint. Do you think it would be good practice to absolutely minimise runs, if i was to do all 15+ doors edges first, then proceed to do all 15 door panels (no. 1) , then proceed to do each door's no.2, no.3 and no.4? I'd like to do the best job possible whilst also not going snow blind painting white on white, and simultaneously not missing anything.
@AubreysAbsoluteDecorating10 ай бұрын
I would recommend fully completing each door as you go to give the best possible finish. Just keep an eye out for runs after completing each door, particularly a the bottom corners of each panel. Hope all goes well for you .

I always thought on a wooden panel door, that the top and bottom of each panel still has the grain running vertically- which makes painting horizontally in those spots , against the grain. This fact has always caused me the most problem. Do you have any suggestions for addressing this inconvenience?
