Great video paw paw... I was going to try this a while ago but never did...i would have thought it would stick better its made for sticking to,wood for drawers etc.....i bet your painted surface caused it to not stick well...this is a great idea and not costly...i bought some contact paper from dollar store and will try some day

Great, let me know how it works.

Great video. I like to use the transfer paper tape that I use with my vinyl stickers. It masks off really nice and seems to stick well. 12” x 100’ roll is $20 on amazon. I don’t like the clear plastic roll. I use the opaque paper. It’s almost like a big fat roll of masking tape.

ShaneHamme. Thanks, I’ll have to check that out. I was trying to stay local and find something that would work. Certainly, I really don’t want to have to spray it every time. Thanks for the suggestion.

I use Oracal contact paper ,no need of extra adhesive, I also use a laminate roller to press onto wood helps to get rid of some of the air bubbles

This was an attempt to use some cheap alternative. I now use Oramask 813 for all of my masking needs.

Great video, I'll definitely have to try this method!

The masking works very well. Look in the comments.Gregory Lawhorn suggested a different material to do the masking. Having the material stick well during the carve and easy release it very important. The material I used did require the extra glue. It's worth finding a material where that is not necessary. Gregory Lawhorn may have the answer.

I read his reply as well. I may look into that. But overall, your video answered pretty much all of the questions I had about masking haha. So thank you very much for that! I did a project for my kids first day of school, where i painted the whole surface after the cut. Allowing the paint to settle into the carved out area. Then sanded off the surface revealing the natural wood but with the carved portuon still painted. Turned out very well.

Thank you for your comments. I'm happy that the video answered most of your questions. Most of the painting that I do is where I carve the project, seal the wood with several coats of sealer, then paint. Once dry, I sand away the paint on the surface leaving the carved portion with the paint. Last step is to seal the wood again. This works great and is a fairly simple process.

Recently, I asked you a question which you were gracious in answering. I have another question, but it would require including an image of a project I'm considering. Is there a way to send you an image through your KZbin channel? Larson Bennett, Safford, AZ

Paw Paw, Do you have a video showing how you painted the Multi Layer Sign?
@larsonbennett59033 жыл бұрын
Nice video. Could I use the exact same process for sealing and painting as you used, except use MDF instead of wood? Thank you.
@PawPawsWorkShop3 жыл бұрын
Yes, just seal the MDF really good to begin with then mask and paint

Why is it important to seal the wood with shellac, if in the end, you apply several coats of clear coat?
@lizardbar13314 жыл бұрын
Great video as always. Question: the masking I use (oramask 613) adheres so well that it pulls the paint off the wood. I didn’t catch the brand of paint you were using?
@PawPawsWorkShop4 жыл бұрын
Most often I use acrylic paints. If it is a spray can it is Rustoleum 2x You can get it at Walmart and the big box stores.

Another alternative that works is to paint and lacquer the project then use yellow painter's tape to mask the project.

Great sign. Thanks for sharing. I've tried the contact paper with my x-carve also and had the same issues with it still sticking. Did the super 77 leave any residue?
@PawPawsWorkShop6 жыл бұрын
M Mays . It left very little residue. The can that I used is also about eight years old. Not sure if a new can of glue would cause more or less residue. Thanks for the comment and question. It did carve very well with the glue. The masking worked well.

This was my main concern as well. I'll have to give this a try with some of the adhesive spray I've got in the shop.

Also, i have been using an airbrush and craft paint which dries in minutes...give it a try and you will be amazed at the outcome.

I like the idea of an air brush. I will have to give that a try. Thank you very much.

Paw paw have you tried a downcut bit? interested if it would prevent it from pulling up. I f anyone has tried this some feedback would be appreciated
@PawPawsWorkShop4 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your comments. This masking turned out to be terrible. Oramask 813 works extremely well. Normally you want to use an upcut bit on PVC to get the chips up and away. The problem is that is pulls up the masking. Yes, when using masking use a down cut bit.

can anyone tell me if shellac is better than polyurathane?
@PawPawsWorkShop3 жыл бұрын
Hopefully a lot of people will join in. I like shellac for sealing the wood and low use finishes. Heavy use items I like poly. For pens I will use CA Starbond glue. It will last for years with heavy use.

Sometimes it is good to show examples of things that do not work as planned and then how to solve the problem. Everything is not always perfect in the shop.
