When I joined your VIP program, around 6-7 years ago now I think it’s been, I only knew a little bit about auto painting and body work and had no experience at all doing it. I signed up with you to learn a new hobby really, but I ended up really getting into it and got good pretty quick. Within the first 2 or 3 months after I joined I was doing small repairs and paint jobs for people on the side. Within 2 years I rented out a little shop, built a paint booth in it and started doing paint and body work full time for myself. Literally everything I know about painting and body work I learned from your website. Just wanted to say thanks man, keep up the awesome work.

I like this vid. As a tech, I sometimes don't understand why people complicate paint repairs. This vid shows the simplicity. I like it. So many people I talk with don't seem to view clear coat as a paint, but clear coat is indeed a paint. So, roughen it up a little and paint right over it.

@bonnivilleblackcherry97455 жыл бұрын
Tony I think your spray bomb spitting and sputtering is from not shaking it up enough. think about how long they "sit" after being put in the can. Possibly days/weeks in the factory. On a truck for a day or 3-4-5. Then in a distrubition warehouse for f knows how long then on the self in the shop yu bought it from. Thats a long time for settling to happen. To help with knowing the gunk build up at the bottom has been suspended flick the bottom of the can with a small screwdriver. Little pocket one. Listen to the tone of the sound. Then do it again after you shake it. You will hear the difference. Then shake it for another 4-5 mins so it gets mixed into whats already suspended. When I know im going to use one I toss it in the shaker and set it for 15 mins. Spitting and sputtering is never an issue.

Good tip Tony. I recently painted a car for my first time using an air compressor and HVLP spray gun and tried painting with primer and without primer over the old colour of the car (scuffed and sanded) and also could not visually tell the difference! Saves time and money to skip the initial primer but just make sure it's prepped nicely and you're good to go.

@clh99336 жыл бұрын
Things to consider before spraying over sanded clear without priming is how easy the color you're going to be spraying will cover. You wouldn't wanna spray a red fender with a white base coat obviously itll take more passes to hideout the color which will result in using more paint. Another thing to consider is the thickness of mils of paint on the surface if it has reached or borderlined the recommended mil thickness and you paint over it then the paint is subject to crack fade etc. and wont last very long

I’m in the process of re clearing a peeling vehicle I been wet sanding the old clear coat and feathering it down to the base coat with 600 grit and itlooks like I will need to hit it with a sandable primer to get a even surface correct? Do I only prime around the feathered sanded areas? And do what u did sand off the rest of the panels clear coat with 400 or 600 and start blasting it with the base coat. Or prime the whole panel ,sand flat then base coat it

So the trick is to lightly sand the previous clear coat to spray paint (primer, base and clear coat) over it? Can you blend a panel to repair a section of the panel without having to sand the previous clear coat? I see a lot of blending videos where the base coat is blended to surrounded areas of the panel without sanding the clear coat. Wouldn't the new clear coat seal the new base coat even if the previous clear coat wasn't sanded?

Tony - I read your book, incredible detailed information. And watched this video as well, my focused was the red side obviously. I have not ever worked on a car, but am inspired by you with the vast education you provide to all of us. I have a black car with relatively good condition except for some hail damaged on the hood and trunk as well. I decided to fixed the small dents with bon-do, prime it, etc. and paint the whole car over sanded clear. Since the car paint is still in good condition, how many coats of paint would you recommend? The clear is going to be 2-3 coats for sure. Thank you Tony!
@HowToPaintYourCar3 жыл бұрын
Thank you. If your spraying base clear... I like to say spray enough until it covers which is normally 2-3 coats. Also 2-3 coats of clear. If spraying single stage, 2-3 coats med-wet. Good luck! 👍🏻

Hi Tony question for you. Can I do the same for alloys. Basically my alloys are silver and I have sanded it down and cleaned and got it looking dull. Now I want to spray it black?can I paint it black without primer. As the paint before had the rust proof on there already. Or do I have to put etch primer? Before spraying it black. Thank you.
@HowToPaintYourCar5 жыл бұрын
Hey what’s up dude actually you might want to prime it because painting directly over any type of metal is not recommended. I mean I think you can do it but I’m not sure how long it would last. It would last for sometime but it might start peeling if left in the weather in the sun for long periods of time over the years. To get a long lasting finish you’ll have to prime it send it then spray it black with your clearcoat. Good luck and keep us posted.
@idris07865 жыл бұрын
Tony B. Richie - Car Mods & Entrepreneurship! Thank you. I live in London and I had a friend from the US came round and started sanding the alloys down. Tony he premiered but used the normal car body primer. When I went to the shop to buy black paint i told them what we did,and they said normal primer will peel off and I should of used etch primer. Now that the wheel has primer shall I sand it down to 320 grit and use etch primer.... or shall I ignore what the shop told me.and just carry on..? Also in normal circumstances before the top coat goes on do you sand down the primer on alloys or not necessary.? The next alloy this is what steps I’ll do. Sanding it down to 320 Etch primer Normal body primer. Sand down (if you advise) Top coat flat colour non metallic. 1000 grit polish it out. Is this correct? Thank you

I like the comparison of using primer vs. not using primer. But you really will not know how it holds up in the sun until 5 or 10 years later. So we really do not know the difference in the two processes. Do you have a long term comparison you can show us?
@HowToPaintYourCar2 жыл бұрын
Hey Man! Sorry as of the moment I don’t have. And it depends with different climate as well. If you’re spraying over a solid topcoat like even a new paint job it doesn’t require primer and it will hold up for a very very long time.

Smooth application! How much is the CFM of the gun used also the CFM of your compressor ?
@HowToPaintYourCar2 жыл бұрын
Thanks buddy! For auto body I recommend using at least a 30-gallon tank because it takes a while to refill the tank and you’ll run out of volume. Volume is very important when you’re painting because you need to make sure you have a lot of air volume to supply your paint time. Ideally, larger air compressors with at least 30 gallons are recommended to hold larger compressed air for you to use during your painting. On the other hand, your motor is the one recharging the air tank for you. It’s better to have a bigger horsepower and stronger CFM to recharge your air tank for faster recovery and overall volume. To learn more about air compressor settings and other auto body tools to help you get started check out our VIP program vip.learnautobodyandpaint.com/special-oto-e

Great video been watching a lot of videos past couple weeks so glad I found this one. I have a question I can't seem to be able to find an answer to anywhere. I just painted the rear fender of my Harley-Davidson Fatboy using aerosol cans I ordered online with the OEM paint code. I did not get enough paint I thought two cans would be enough and for someone more experienced it probably would have been this is my first attempt at any kind of body work or paint. But my question is since I'm going to be waiting almost a week for my new paint to arrive can I just spray right over what I already put down or should I scuff it up first using 400 or 600 and if so should I do it wet or dry it may be important to know that my paint has metallic in it. It's Harley's Pacific Blue Pearl. Thanks!

Quick tip for the sandpaper instead of folding it, just put duct tape on the back of it then you don’t have to fold it over and it’ll help even out where your fingers are when you’re standing. Also in my opinion I think the Eastwood 2K clear in a spray can is better than the spray max. Long story short I had issues with spray max but none with Eastwood. Just my opinion anyway thanks for the video.

OK thank you so much! I've been thinking to myself when watching people do touch up videos, that the paint is overlapping some onto the old paint and sticking, and then I saw someone else do a scuff up with 1500 grit paper to half a hood as a blend in from the other half that he primed, and I'm going, "ok that's sticking..." I want to freshen up the paint on my dodge ram '01 with the same paint, so I don't want to ruin the color I already have with gray primer. I was going to try doing a scuff up with 400 grit and giving it a go with the dupicolor color match paint in the can and now after watching this, I'm totally going to do it! (then add clear over that).

I have a shop available to me for about 3-4 days. I’m trying to get a quick but durable paint job in using urethane. I do have a few dents I plan to fix. My question is, can I spot prime the repairs with a 2k rattle can and go straight to sanding and applying new base coat? Or will the primed spots show up?

What about if you have deep scratched clear coat or if it was roughly sanded and you wanted to fix it and make it blend with the rest of the paint, would it be applicable to respray just clear? or would you have to repaint that area again

Hello, I thought I had good coverage with the base coat, and clear coated twice. Paint was not sprayed on thick enough I guess. I want to correct by sanding clear coat I sprayed, then spray base the clear coat again. Is that a good thing to do.? FYI, everything was spray can. Thanks

Hey ,I wanna paint my car,it has a terrible done paint job where its flaking just from a cleaning with a water hose .would I need to sand it down to metal or what? And also in general how much cans of paint I would need for a smaller car ? And primer if necessary ? And clear and where can I find car paint??

Question: Does the same apply for plaster (pyroxylin)? Can I apply to sanded clear coat without applying primer?

How about a all out color change inside and out, down to the bare metal taking out dents by hand with the absolute minimum of any bondo and wrap it all up with a true show shine finish? I'm doing a 100% frame off restoration on a crew cab dually so I definitely have my work cut out for me. I know very little about body work but I don't believe in bondo or fiber glass repairs.

So will this work on the whole car? The clear coat is peeling on my Honda all over and plan to paint, but if I can get away with no primer to save a buck that be great.
