We’re painting these two fenders and we’re going to show you that you don’t have to prime these parts to paint over it with another color.
We’re going to show you one fender which we sprayed base coat over and another fender which we primed it then sprayed gold base coat over.
We’re also going to be doing it a few different things on this door which I already did. Continue watching this 2-part series video. Don’t forget to Like, Share and Subscribe to my videos! Also comment below and grab your FREE 85-Page Auto Body And Paint Manual.
If you want to get a comprehensive guide on DIY auto body work and paint, check out the LearnAutoBodyAndPaint VIP Course.
Check out the video now!
Before body and paint, always make sure that your parts are clean. We are going to wet sand with 400-grit. You’ll be fine as long as it’s a wet silicone carbide sand paper.
I like to buy 8×11 sand paper sheets which I cut down to quarter sections. I fold them into a palm size so it’s perfect for wet sanding.
When you sand, don’t use your three fingers like how I show you in the video. Use your entire hand when sanding. Check out the demo!
The key is to get it flat looking. Another quick way to find out if you’re sanding over base coat clear coat is that if you see white while sanding. On the other hand, if you’re sanding over single stage, the color will be coming right off because there’s no clear coat on it. If this car is just single stage, you’ll see red coming right off at this point.
However, if we sand too much and cut through the clear coat, you’re going to see the red coming out of your hand because you’re getting into the base coat.
There’s a couple of dents but we’re not going to worry about that for now because this is not a dent repair video but mostly finishing. We can fix the dents later on and then repaint the car.
This is pretty much done with the 400-grit. That’s how quickly you can have it completed. This is ready to spray base coat over.
A lot of people ask what color they can paint over. It depends on your final color. You can pretty much put any color over a base coat, especially if you’re going darker. You won’t hurt it. If you’re shooting white over this, you need to make sure to spray a few coats to cover it. Put enough white to cover it.
In this project, we used the Atom Mini X16 Spray Gun with a 1.0mm tip size. The 1.2mm tip size is recommended for larger pieces for better material coverage. If you want to check out these awesome spray guns, head on over to Zoolaa now.
Continue watching the video to learn more to help you with your own custom projects.
It’s Tony from LearnAutoBodyAndPaint. Thanks everyone for watching and I hope you enjoyed this video.
Talk soon! Cheers!

When I joined your VIP program, around 6-7 years ago now I think it’s been, I only knew a little bit about auto painting and body work and had no experience at all doing it. I signed up with you to learn a new hobby really, but I ended up really getting into it and got good pretty quick. Within the first 2 or 3 months after I joined I was doing small repairs and paint jobs for people on the side. Within 2 years I rented out a little shop, built a paint booth in it and started doing paint and body work full time for myself. Literally everything I know about painting and body work I learned from your website. Just wanted to say thanks man, keep up the awesome work.

I like this vid. As a tech, I sometimes don't understand why people complicate paint repairs. This vid shows the simplicity. I like it. So many people I talk with don't seem to view clear coat as a paint, but clear coat is indeed a paint. So, roughen it up a little and paint right over it.

Hey, Tony, You are a good teacher! Please let your audience know when painting to do all you cutting in first like wheel wells edge, front and rear edges or door jams, etc. any hard to get areas then spray the main panels. so you don't overspray the panel. Keep up the good videos

Tony I think your spray bomb spitting and sputtering is from not shaking it up enough. think about how long they "sit" after being put in the can. Possibly days/weeks in the factory. On a truck for a day or 3-4-5. Then in a distrubition warehouse for f knows how long then on the self in the shop yu bought it from. Thats a long time for settling to happen. To help with knowing the gunk build up at the bottom has been suspended flick the bottom of the can with a small screwdriver. Little pocket one. Listen to the tone of the sound. Then do it again after you shake it. You will hear the difference. Then shake it for another 4-5 mins so it gets mixed into whats already suspended. When I know im going to use one I toss it in the shaker and set it for 15 mins. Spitting and sputtering is never an issue.

They say hold the can about 12 inches back or you'll get runs , and this man held the can up close to where he wanted to and no runs nothing but straight smooth. Man you're a bad man in a good way , i quess when a person practice whatever they might do , they became pros at what they do. You're a cold man , you know every step of that work and makes it look easy.

Things to consider before spraying over sanded clear without priming is how easy the color you're going to be spraying will cover. You wouldn't wanna spray a red fender with a white base coat obviously itll take more passes to hideout the color which will result in using more paint. Another thing to consider is the thickness of mils of paint on the surface if it has reached or borderlined the recommended mil thickness and you paint over it then the paint is subject to crack fade etc. and wont last very long

Now I know that I don't have to prime but just sand it with 400 grit. It will save me a lot of trouble and money!😃😄😁 Thanks so much! I'm an avid fan, Tony! Godbless...

Good tip Tony. I recently painted a car for my first time using an air compressor and HVLP spray gun and tried painting with primer and without primer over the old colour of the car (scuffed and sanded) and also could not visually tell the difference! Saves time and money to skip the initial primer but just make sure it's prepped nicely and you're good to go.

Quick tip for the sandpaper instead of folding it, just put duct tape on the back of it then you don’t have to fold it over and it’ll help even out where your fingers are when you’re standing. Also in my opinion I think the Eastwood 2K clear in a spray can is better than the spray max. Long story short I had issues with spray max but none with Eastwood. Just my opinion anyway thanks for the video.

Thank you for the very informative video!! I just wished that I would've researched this prior and watched this first before jumping into sanding down my fender! Tony - I read your book, incredible detailed information. And watched this video as well, my focused was the red side obviously. I have not ever worked on a car, but am inspired by you with the vast education you provide to all of us. I have a black car with relatively good condition except for some hail damaged on the hood and trunk as well. I decided to fixed the small dents with bon-do, prime it, etc. and paint the whole car over sanded clear. Since the car paint is still in good condition, how many coats of paint would you recommend? The clear is going to be 2-3 coats for sure. Thank you Tony!
@HowToPaintYourCar
@HowToPaintYourCar 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you. If your spraying base clear... I like to say spray enough until it covers which is normally 2-3 coats. Also 2-3 coats of clear. If spraying single stage, 2-3 coats med-wet. Good luck! 👍🏻

OK thank you so much! I've been thinking to myself when watching people do touch up videos, that the paint is overlapping some onto the old paint and sticking, and then I saw someone else do a scuff up with 1500 grit paper to half a hood as a blend in from the other half that he primed, and I'm going, "ok that's sticking..." I want to freshen up the paint on my dodge ram '01 with the same paint, so I don't want to ruin the color I already have with gray primer. I was going to try doing a scuff up with 400 grit and giving it a go with the dupicolor color match paint in the can and now after watching this, I'm totally going to do it! (then add clear over that).

So the trick is to lightly sand the previous clear coat to spray paint (primer, base and clear coat) over it? Can you blend a panel to repair a section of the panel without having to sand the previous clear coat? I see a lot of blending videos where the base coat is blended to surrounded areas of the panel without sanding the clear coat. Wouldn't the new clear coat seal the new base coat even if the previous clear coat wasn't sanded?

Thanks, you answered my question of can i paint over my red door with yellow. I'll rub it down and give it a couple of coats of paint then clearcoat. I'm not looking for a Rolls Royce result, just a yellow door to match the rest of the car. The red door i've got is perfect in every way, apart from not being yellow enough... I might even go mad and sort out the roof which lost half of it's clear coat when i pressure washed one saturday morning.

If I could offer one suggestion. Never sand with your hand and sand paper. There are a crazy bumps, pressure points, and so on that create not only uneven sanding but deeper scratches in the primer/paint due to the different way the hand is designed. I would strongly recommend buying a small sanding block, or larger for long areas. Another trick is to use wet/dry sandpaper cut big enough to wrap in a med grade sponge. This will provide a more smooth grind and gives you better control over your paper.

How about a all out color change inside and out, down to the bare metal taking out dents by hand with the absolute minimum of any bondo and wrap it all up with a true show shine finish? I'm doing a 100% frame off restoration on a crew cab dually so I definitely have my work cut out for me. I know very little about body work but I don't believe in bondo or fiber glass repairs.

I am a part of your VIP program but do not know where to ask questions. I have a car with peeling clearcoat but the actual basecoat revealed looks fine. can I just sand off the clear coat then add another coat a base then clear coat? thanks

You could six hundred it down flat removing feathering the bad clear and then base over it
@HowToPaintYourCar

I said this in the video... You'll need to prime that, then wash it flat with 400 grit. Then proceed with new fresh base, followed by your clear! Good luck keep me posted!

I want to clear over 1985 paint to protect the original faded paint. I want the truck to look old, but protected. Please advise on preparing the original paint and then a semi gloss clear. Thank you.

Hi Tony it's comforting to Know that I'd get a good finish , but how about in terms of strength? Will it Hold ? Will the base hold on the clear to last ?
@markchimmy

Just wanted to add that unless you are painting a part that has been previously painted single stage paint you should properly sand it and then prime it! to avoid all sorts of problems that will develop sooner or later! Base coat clear coat on top of just sanded single stage paint dont ever mix well!

I had my car repainted, let's just say some incorrect materials were used resulting in lots of orange peel. The painter buffed out the orange peel but induced lots of swirls and even pretty much took the clear coat off. The car is due to go back to the painter for a new layer of clear coat. Obviously I don't intend to let him do the detailing with paint this time but let's say its a normal sized sedan how much clear coat should I get sprayed to be on the safe side for any future correction? The car had primer before the repaint job, he will be sanding down the car to get the clear coat whatever is left off and then do a layer of base coat to refresh and finish with clear. I am assuming from your video the clear coat should be taken all out before the new base coat and clearcoat is applied - dealing with same color here.

So will this work on the whole car? The clear coat is peeling on my Honda all over and plan to paint, but if I can get away with no primer to save a buck that be great.

Hi Tony question for you. Can I do the same for alloys. Basically my alloys are silver and I have sanded it down and cleaned and got it looking dull. Now I want to spray it black?can I paint it black without primer. As the paint before had the rust proof on there already. Or do I have to put etch primer? Before spraying it black. Thank you.

Hey what’s up dude actually you might want to prime it because painting directly over any type of metal is not recommended. I mean I think you can do it but I’m not sure how long it would last. It would last for sometime but it might start peeling if left in the weather in the sun for long periods of time over the years. To get a long lasting finish you’ll have to prime it send it then spray it black with your clearcoat. Good luck and keep us posted.

Tony B. Richie - Car Mods & Entrepreneurship! Thank you. I live in London and I had a friend from the US came round and started sanding the alloys down. Tony he premiered but used the normal car body primer. When I went to the shop to buy black paint i told them what we did,and they said normal primer will peel off and I should of used etch primer. Now that the wheel has primer shall I sand it down to 320 grit and use etch primer.... or shall I ignore what the shop told me.and just carry on..? Also in normal circumstances before the top coat goes on do you sand down the primer on alloys or not necessary.? The next alloy this is what steps I’ll do. Sanding it down to 320 Etch primer Normal body primer. Sand down (if you advise) Top coat flat colour non metallic. 1000 grit polish it out. Is this correct? Thank you

I like the comparison of using primer vs. not using primer. But you really will not know how it holds up in the sun until 5 or 10 years later. So we really do not know the difference in the two processes. Do you have a long term comparison you can show us?

Hey Man! Sorry as of the moment I don’t have. And it depends with different climate as well. If you’re spraying over a solid topcoat like even a new paint job it doesn’t require primer and it will hold up for a very very long time.

Great video and thanks for sharing. I painted two boat out drives which came out spotless until I sprayed the COLORRITE clearcoat which came out as yellow dust like pollen on a clean car. Wet sending the clear coat and applying the same paint should work? And than reapply clear coat. Also how long do you wait from coat to coat?

I'M SO PISSED! SOMEBODY HELP ME.... I applied 3 coats of turbo black spray paint in my truck door and got a few small drips so gave it two hours to dry and I lightly sanded it and when I went to apply another light coat over it to cover it the paint came on and is looking like cracks or shatter glass of that makes sense... How do I fix this!?!?!?

Smooth application! How much is the CFM of the gun used also the CFM of your compressor ?

Thanks buddy! For auto body I recommend using at least a 30-gallon tank because it takes a while to refill the tank and you’ll run out of volume. Volume is very important when you’re painting because you need to make sure you have a lot of air volume to supply your paint time. Ideally, larger air compressors with at least 30 gallons are recommended to hold larger compressed air for you to use during your painting. On the other hand, your motor is the one recharging the air tank for you. It’s better to have a bigger horsepower and stronger CFM to recharge your air tank for faster recovery and overall volume. To learn more about air compressor settings and other auto body tools to help you get started check out our VIP program vip.learnautobodyandpaint.com/special-oto-e

Ok so if you can wet sand the clear coat n spray top coat directly on it without priming...is it " Best Practices " to prime then? The finished product should be better over sanded primer, right?

Great video answered some questions I had. I’m in the process of re clearing a peeling vehicle I been wet sanding the old clear coat and feathering it down to the base coat with 600 grit and itlooks like I will need to hit it with a sandable primer to get a even surface correct? Do I only prime around the feathered sanded areas? And do what u did sand off the rest of the panels clear coat with 400 or 600 and start blasting it with the base coat. Or prime the whole panel ,sand flat then base coat it
