can you please make a video explaining how you create out of focus/blurry distance backgrounds please? i always put too much detail in the background which makes the piece too busy, but without the detail i don't think you can tell what the background is properly. please help with finding a balance! i absolutely love your work and videos, youre truly an inspiration. i hope you realise how much of a positive impact you have on so many peoples lives every day

I loved this video! I've been drawing a lot of portraits lately (as you can see in my avatar), and decided to make them more creative, so I've been entertaining the idea of backgrounds. This video came at a great time! I think what I learned the most from this one, is that sometimes the answer to what to draw is in the questions you should ask yourself. I had never thought of that and would love to learn more!

This was one of the most informative videos you have ever uploaded. Following the thought process that goes into creating a painting is so exciting. I find that if you have specific elements in your piece, i.e. trees, flowers, etc., they often look best when they're framing the subject(s) in a sense. Keep atmospheric distance in mind. Things that are further from the foreground tend to take on a misty, greyish look. They also lose finer details. Pay particular attention to negative space, the space where there isn't anything. Depending on how far the background is from the subject, certain placement decisions can throw off the depth of the piece. For instance, if the edge of a background element overlaps with the edge of a foreground or mid-ground element, it can pull the background forward in an awkward fashion. Hope some of these are of some use to someone.

I've always admired you're mystical backgrounds so I enjoyed you're advice on this topic a lot. One way to do an interesting background is to paint that first - it can be an abstract painting - and then paint the main figure/topic on top how ever it fits. I kinda used this in my Tyrannosaurus painting.

I love your videos so much and I always find them very helpful but I am really happy I actually came across this one as I usually have quite a lot of trouble with backgrounds. Okay so my art style is very detailed, like this super detailed line art pattern thing I don't go over absolutely everything but I do go over most of the objects in my piece with the outliner pen; the thing is, when it comes to backgrounds, because my character is very detailed and I love details, my background is very detailed too. The use of shadows and highlights does help a lot and I just want to say thank you for some awesome tips😃👍 love ur art

JamieRose Art Could rubbing alcohol help get paint out from your nails/hands? Maybe that could help if you don't have gloves. I've never tried it so I don't really know if it will work 100%
@7thKrownTarot7 жыл бұрын
It's generally a good idea to wear gloves when working with any art supplies, wash hands after using them, and not eat around your supplies because over time you could be absorbing a lot of harmfull chemicals, pigments, solvents etc. :) there's a lot of stuff that can cause real damage over time as well as cause cancer if you don't practice good habits. In the long run wearing gloves saves so much time, too. Anyway, those is my 2 cents. Make art as long as you can! Take care of your human vessel!

I fell in love with this painting video, it turned out so beautiful! 💞 Quick question,How did you become comfortable with painting portraits from your imagination and not looking at references to paint? I'm having a difficult time having the portraits I paint from my imagination look as realistic as the reference portrait drawings I sketch for practice. ( I want it to look really realistic) I know it's requires a lot of practice and patience,but I would love to hear some of your tips and advice that helped you. Thanks💞
@AutomHatter7 жыл бұрын
Even when artists are painting characters from their imagination they still use references. Instead of looking at one photo to paint the face, they will look at many photos to get a good reference from specific features. Maybe one photo for the eyes, one for the nose, the face shape, the lighting, etc... Whatever photos best fit the image they have in their mind.

Dear Happy, dear community, I may need your help. I always wanted to become a professional artist and I practiced a lot in my life, but since I went to university (I study german language) I just feel so insecure and I am so afraid of getting started and fail to do it well. I know that you have to fail in order to get better but it just scares me so much, that I just stop as soon as I have prepared the panel. I always try to not use a ton of detail in the background and instead use illusions to express the setting. So I use a lot of layers and looser brushwork. I find this creates interest and further contrast where the main subject has a lot of specific detail against a background that doesn't have too much to take in and look at.
