I loved this video!!! You made so many amazing points. I always see my artist friends compare their half finished works with someone's completed work and get discouraged. You will always have that "ugly phase" when you first start working on a piece, and that isn't a bad thing! You just have to keep pushing through and refine the piece more. Awesome video Happy!

Definitely nailed the high expectations right. I push myself so much sometimes. I picked up digital art less than a year ago and pushed myself to learn so many different things at once. And I did improve at a very fast rate but it was so draining, and I almost regret doing it because whenever I moved to a different style I hated it so intensely and it was my only motivation to improve. It's such a toxic way to go about it.

practice quick figure drawings, it'll help a lot with making your characters look less stiff and more natural and flowy. Also find reference photos and try to re create their poses. IMO it's much easier to make a pose more look more natural with reference then with out it. and PRACTICE! you probably won't see a ton of improvement the first time you do this, but over time if you put in GOOD practice you will see improvements and your poses wont look as stiff

Have you ever tried a gesture drawing exercise or study? It is a great way to help you loosen up your wrists and elbows and learning how to do loose lines.
@NocturnalisMoth7 жыл бұрын
You're probably going about drawing as a two dimensional thing. Always try to observe the figure you are drawing as a 3D object in front of a camera. Take space into consideration, and start learning perspective and foreshortening, it can bring so much dynamic to the piece. Also never sketch characters with straight lines and boxes, rather use curved lines and ellipses, observe how human body works (in the mirror is just fine) and look up anatomy of bones and muscles. Once you see how it all connects it'll click in your mind how to position each body part in any pose to keep the natural flow, and stiffness will fade from the picture naturally.

Thank you for this inspirational video. I am feeling this way right now and this somehow alleviated that thought. I have just started drawing only after I resigned due to back injury. And embarrassing as it may be, I am in my late 40's and all I could ever do is image reference cartoons. I know that the chances are too slim to develop, but I just keep on. More power to your channel as you bring a lot of inspiration to struggling art aspirants like me.

Senim Zitro You’re never too old! My best friend is 42 and he has been learning to draw since he was 41. His improvement is staggering.His lines slice along the page perfectly straight, he draws circles seamlessly and has created stunning product designs of razors etc. In one year he just improved so drastically and he started from zero. He hadn’t a clue how to draw. It’s something I tell my students-talent is a myth, with enough hard work anybody can learn to draw. The amount of students I’ve seen in my classes improve and learn to draw is heartening.

Madame Cristina Thank you so much for these encouraging words. It has been a passion of mine since I was still young and never got the chance to pursue art school because it was extremely expensive. My parents opted me to take business course in college so I wasn't able to pursue it. As of this time, I merely just draw reference based.I guess this brought about my insecurities when I joined an art community and most members are kids and teens who draw like a pro. Thanks again for these inspiring words. It boosted my low self esteem.

I really love the pale blue tones in this piece. My favorite pieces by you are always the weird ones. :) On another note, to expand on your point about comparing your best work to your not so great work and not leveling up every time; I've noticed that I'll go through a time period where I feel content with my work but after a while start to get a little bored. Then I will try something new and maybe make a piece that surpasses my expectations and makes me feel really proud and excited. Then, the piece I make after that does not stand up to the previous work that I was really proud of. It's like I make a huge leap foreword and then take a step back. The reason for this is that although I discovered something that helped with my improvement, I had not yet mastered that improvement. The newest piece I make after the really good one is just a reflection of what I had already mastered and had I not created something nicer than that I may not have been disappointed continuing with my usual style. After going through this numerous times, I've noticed that often when I make a really nice piece that I am proud of, I end up being reluctant or even afraid to start my next piece because I'm worried about being disappointed with myself. The way I learned to move past this is to clear my mind and just focus on putting marks on paper without having a goal. It gets me into the flow, takes away the fear and sometimes I even learn more new things.

Great advice, and painting :-) I have a question related to what you talked about with comfort zones. You hear artists talk about the discomfort/difficulty of going from monochromatic/graphite drawing to color painting, but what if someone (in this case me lol) is attracted to art for the color, has a natural intuitive understanding of how color works and naturally feels comfortable with that, but finds monochromatic, graphite drawing difficult/uninspiring? What can I do to get more into it so practicing doesn't feel like torture? Up until recently, I have only done abstract art focused on color, shape, and texture. Painting these things is what attracted me to art- as a hobby. I'm 35. I have 3 small children, so I can't send 8 hrs a day practicing. I'm probably never going to be a professional artist and that's ok. It's just something I want to do well for myself. And if that leads to something bigger later, that's fine too. Anyway, If the answer to "what do I do if I find working in pencil drawing boring?" is simply that I need to suck it up and push through, I'm ok with that. I'm working on that now. I just want to ask an actual artist because maybe you have some tips or advice or ideas I'm unaware of.
@julzgulz19927 жыл бұрын
Try doing monochromatic drawings with one color instead of black. Use a purple or blue color pencil and then progress to adding warm colors for effect . Experiment and have fun! There are "rules" but remember that art can break rules, too. Just practicing getting tone and shape right is enough and anything you create is a success! :-)

A little saying I've heard lately, "The definition of a genius is the ability to take infinite pains". I believe it's by Rockwell. As an artist I set my goals high and strive to be my best self; all that comes with pain and dedication. We are programmed to do the easy things in life, to take the short cuts, but if we refuse to go down and push against our very nature, we will go far.

Have you ever had the experience of creating an art piece you get into almost a trance working on and find it very difficult but energizing at the same time, and find yourself very proud of the results, and then look at the same piece a week or so later and don't feel anything? Or gotten bored with a piece that you were passionate about before you even finish it? I'm struggling with this lately. It's a much better struggle than the creative block I had that lasted over a year, but it still sucks. I don't trust my own creative high anymore, or my ability to stick with a project until it's finished

Hello happy D I have a question for you, in your drawings and paintings. Why do you paint the noses red?
@GenreChowderStudios7 жыл бұрын
One thing you can try to do is to not generalize your comparison to other artists. Don't just look at their work and then back to yours and say "I'm soooo bad!" Look at theirs and ask yourself "Can I identify a few very small things they do that I like but that I don't do? If so, what are they, and how can I learn from them?" For instance, I follow this artist called Kiwi Byrd, and I noticed that they seem to never use pure white for eyeballs. "Yeah," I thought. "Pure white does look really artificial, I suppose. Not usually what I'm going for with organic body parts. Maybe I should see what I can do with that." So I played around with that, and not only did I pretty much stop using pure white for eyeballs, I went a step further and pretty much stopped using pure white entirely. I usually use an extremely light/pale version of a relevant color near it. Obviously, you don't want to just steal people's everything, so be mindful of what techniques you appropriate. Try to LEARN more from experienced artists as opposed to just COPYING them. Also, the picture in my avatar was from a long time ago. That's why it has white in it. _>

I'm finally going to a school that somewhat gives anything art related.. wish me luck xd But art is like food. When mom makes it with her love and you are always surprised with the results. Hey this may seem like a stupid question but, I don't hate my artwork and I'm worried that's bad. As an artist I would say in I'm in an awkward stage between novice and average. But despite my pieces imperfect nature, I still like them and I still feel pride in them. I tell myself "I'll get better once I get proper training" or "look how much I've improved from two years ago." Of course I've made artworks I don't like, but I don't let it ruin my day. And as I write down it may seem like I have nothing to worry about, but I always hear about artist at and above my current skill level being displeased with their art and it makes me worried that maybe I'm not passionate enough or I'm not as serious about art as others. And I'm voicing this because I want advice, I in no way want to come off as a victim. So I hope I didn't come off wrong, I understand that this probably shouldn't be a concern. I just can't make the thought that me not feeling displeased with my art is a bad thing go away.
