This is a really good tutorial for that higher standard of skin on a hero. For massed troops a similar effect can be created very quickly by starting with the midtone blue and then using a purple wash to establish shadows and then as you build the highlights using Pale Sand (Vallejo) or Fair Skin Highlight (Reaper), for example, instead of white to lighten the blue, with the final highlight just being the warm off-white.

Thank you for explaining that painting isn't baking! When people ask what paints are used it is very rarely colours that come in the pot that give an effect, and I think that really is one of the skill ceilings that people need to learn to overcome if they want to truly improve their painting.

This is actually the first video I've watched of Vince. Fresh back into the hobby after 15 years, back then I cared only to get the army fielded as quickly and "efficiently" as I could. Turns out efficient only meant awful to my wiser eyes now... 3000 pts of chaos demon soup from the days of metal cast beasts of nurgle, kairos , karanak etc, soaked and toothbrushed clean, filings, mold lines, green stuffs, proper priming, very tzeench focused. This video has inspired me to finally commit to a fat pool of blue horrors. Insta like and subscribe

I have painted an Orc with the mint green skin tone you had shown in one of your previous tutorials and it turned out great. I've done a couple of past videos on red skin, so certainly check those. I would say the real key is pushing those shadows to a rich tone (you can even mix green in) and then deciding if you want to go to yellow or pink for highlights.

Hiya Vince(y V), long time first time all that. I must admit that blue skin is a subject that fascinates me greatly and one I'm hungry to explore barring the time needed to do so, speaking as a fan of T'au, though mostly Tzeentch, and I suppose the Blue Man Group? It's also a pretty common go to alien skintone in fiction outside of green or gray. Something I'd love to see explored (by which I wanna if/when I get the chance but I'm sure the topic might interest you) is making the concept more realistic through melanin/skin pigmentation variation like we humans have. Like, T'au have such a populace living across various colony worlds. Surely some of the blue aliens might look a little blue-green? Idk it is just a thought I've had and wanted an excuse to try myself.

If you would let me I would gladly send you a Ghorgon to add to your 5 for the mighty Vincent V. Quakefray force. I’ll never use it. I bought 2 of the BoC start collectings a while back for a particular dedicated practice thing and that’s it lol. Beasts are not anything I’ll ever do anything with anymore I don’t think so it’s just space hogging now. I have this idea of it being a good way to feature in a video very acutely how it isn’t necessary to strip a mini because you would certainly want to take what I’ve done further (it’s already Tzeentchy though! :) ).

this was a huge help, I was looking for some ways to paint blue skin ever since i decided to make my daemon/tzeentch themed word bearers have blue skin. @VinceVenturella
@VinceVenturella Жыл бұрын
The orange is going to be pretty crazy, what you see here (purple and the teal would work). If you go Orange, it will feel pretty clown fiesta unless you really desaturate it AND spread it evenly around the model. I mean the neutral colors of something like black or ivory would also work.

I have an interesting question. How would you do blue skin with oil paints? I used cerulean blue, thinned it down into a pre glaze, added a bunch of white and some teal for my highlights, and for the shadows, I added some ultramarine and cadmium red. It came out pretty decent for shadowsun's face. But I'm wondering how you would approach it?
@VinceVenturella

I think that is fine, but I would maybe include a flesh tone in the highlight mix, it could help make it feel a little more natural.

Hi Vince, I have a question to you. Whould you say, that there are big differences, in paintig techniques and styles between miniature painting and scale modeling, especially when it comes to create realism? Whould you say, that things like, edge highlighting or other miniature painting techniques are common in scale modeling to or not that much? Kind regards Mark L.
@VinceVenturella
@VinceVenturella Жыл бұрын
Oh yes, absolutely, huge differences in style and techniques, how the figure is approached, how its executed and more. The contrast is often different, the focus on light. The nature of the color used even can vary.
@sirbobulous

How would you approach painting feathers? I'm thinking mostly in smaller amounts like a headdress or a random dangling feather on a necklace not full blown Tzeentch polychromatic chicken-o-doom.
@VinceVenturella
@VinceVenturella Жыл бұрын
Depends on the specific features, but I have tackled them individually before in some videos. If we're talking traditional eagle features or something, then almost like ivory and then draw some subtle washes and filters toward the bottom, then carefully highlight the striations of the individual raised elements of the feather to create a transition from ivory to dark black/brown.
