I just tried this technique for the first time, and while it doesn't look anything like what you have on the screen, it's worlds better than any hair I have done before. I wish I could post pictures in youtube comments. Unlike most things I try to paint, the more I messed with it, the better it looked.

The only thing left on my shardspeaker for Holy Wars is the hair and I wanted brown to go with the blues, purples, & gold of the model. Perfect timing on this video, thank you sir. See you in February on Herner’s amazing tables!

Vince, the way you explain the idea of using the brightest down to the midtone for the upper/sricky uppy parts, and the darkest up to the midrone for the lower /turned away from the light parts (I hope im making sense) immediately this clicked in my head with the new Fanatic paints from Army Painter, with each color family having 4 triads in it. Its as if they designed it for you!

What I would like to see would be a guide on painting curly hair. There's the admitted unfortunate that so few models have curly hair but I'd love to see a painting example that isn't straight hair. But beside my griping, the actual tutorial is good, as usual.

Hi Vince. Another really lovely result 👍 You emphasise that it is a process of back-and-forth (futzing as you used to call it!) I would be interested as to how you manage your wet palette to keep track of all the different mixes that you use. As something of a noob to mini/figure painting I sometimes find it difficult to remember which colours/mixes of paint I have used where when I come back to repaint bits.. Perhaps this would be enough of a topic for a video in itself?
@VinceVenturella
@VinceVenturella Жыл бұрын
Glad it was helpful. I have an older video on how I manage my wet palette, so you may want to look into that, essentially, I just work out from the original colors and create a little map.

Just finished a dwarf using tips from your red hair vid and was pleased with my rudimentary implementation (more with the tonality) so thanks Vince, the richness & realistic light play/volumes in this one will certainly be in mind on whatever my next project is, what sculpt/line is this beautiful model from?

Great teachings, Vince. I do have a question regarding your glazing technique. When glazing, are you supposed to be glazing with a brighter or darker tone? Or does it vary? I never know which tone to apply to create the "seamless transition".
@VinceVenturella
@VinceVenturella Жыл бұрын
It varies, the answer is it's easier to glaze down because those colors tend to be more transparent. I have several videos specific to glazing, so definitely check those out. But yes, a darker color and glazing into the shadows is generally an easier time.

Have you ever made a video on under-skin veins? I see these on many muscular models and I’ve studied enough anatomy to know that different color protruding veins can be quite clear and a great accent detail on models.

Hey Vince. I have an unrelated question. When I zenithal with white ink, my 2.0 speed paints reactivate the white ink. I’ve tried doing a gloss coat of varnish, but that “muddies” up the zenithal to look bland and gray. Any suggestions? Wait longer for cure? Idk. Thanks in advance.
@VinceVenturella
@VinceVenturella Жыл бұрын
A quick level of varnish before you start painting is generally the answer (I don't use ink for zenithal, they reactivate with anything too easily, I use white paint or primer), but varnish is the answer.

Silly question: how does this work when the hair are “horizontal”, say pulled back into a bun? Having the halo perpendicular to the hair does not feel right, but going parallel, you can’t really pull the lines up or down… Any tips?
@VinceVenturella
@VinceVenturella 5 ай бұрын
The real world is our guide, so if we look at examples with hair in that style, it can help. That being said, the zones still remain the same for light and you trace out the highlight strands with the direction of the hair.

Great work, loved the hair series. But...does anyone paint 28mm -35mm gaming scale figures any more!? EDIT: juys, i meant, are any youtube content creators painting gaming scale anymore, which is itself use of exaggeration as rhetorical flourish to say Vince, can you do more gaming scale paints cause its hard to translate bust painting down to a 28 mm human (or at least, id like to see examples of that more).

KZbin content creaors,@@billdefranza4927? Certainly pretty rare for Dr. V to paint non-busts or giant sized gaming minis. Feels like most of the content creators I follow are doing amazing large scale paining, but few focus on the kind of painting most of their viewers are doing. In short I was using rhetorical exaggeration to ask VV to do more gaming scale paint videos pls.

Sure, I tend to use these larger figures because 1) they are more what I am painting and 2) They are much easier to film and show on camera when explaining techniques, but there will be lots of gaming figures as well. :)

COuldn't say sadly, I don't often use citadel paints, but the exact paints don't matter, it's the techniques. Pick an equal number of paints that look roughly in the area and you're good.

Brown hair isn't that obvious to us colourblind folk. The thing holding us back? Doubt. Doubt that the colours are correct.
@VinceVenturella
@VinceVenturella 7 ай бұрын
Makes total sense. FOrtunately, most of the challenge here is in the value (the light) not the hue (color). The hue can actually be a wide range of colors, but the value is what sells it. :)
