Don't Hate, Decorate!! Give that dull porch or patio NEW life with a coat of Behr Premium Floor Coating. Through a lil trial and error I came to the conclusion that my way was easier than their directions. Overall I am impressed with the outcome and love the new look. Prepare the surface prior to applying the new coating and you too can achieve great results.
My porch is around 80sq. ft.
2 gal. of Behr Premium floor covering @ 45.00 ea.
The Porch was painted red prior to all the prep and a few spots were left. After the 2nd coat onlt a 2ish square foot area i saw some red still bleeding through so when i do the walk way ill do another coat on that spot. But for about $150, for the walk way and porch, the look is worth it to go from drab to WOW!

Great job scraping to prep the surface. After scraping you should have used the Behr #880 Bonding Primer. After the bonding primer dried apply 2 thin coats using a 1/4 adhesive roller. Granite Grip is meant to be layered in multiple thin coats. 1 gallon covers 50sq ft with 2 coats. 3rd coat if necessary. Finished product looks good!

Thanks for the video. My plan is to paint an old patio too, one with at least two (very old) coats of paint. So...I will be scraping the entire section first; followed by pressure cleaning; then it's on to applying the paint. If there is a primer available, I will use the primer first instead of using the coating first. As you say, "preparation" is the key to getting the desired results!

I used this same product and followed the instructions from the BEHR video. It took way more gallons than expected and it didn't look quite as nice as yours. On the second coat, I started to do double roll method in the same area to help it spread easier. I was thinking of pouring it on, which I should have done, but decided not to risk wasting all the granite grip. Like several people already mentioned, I wish I would have seen your video first. I did this on my outdoor slab in the backyard that I keep my BBQ pit on. I still lack some cracks that were filled in to paint over that I was letting dry while I did my painting. This was the practice area so I know what to do for the garage. Thanks for posting this video and I will definitely use this method on my garage. I can't wait to see more videos and I do have pictures of the steps I took to coat my slab. Still have more to do this weekend.

Thank you Steve for viewing. Very true I watched their videos and after just a few rolls I knew this wasn't going to work. The roller just wasn't picking up the granules just the liquid so pouring it was the only option. I have a small area that the red still bleed through so when I do the walk way I’ll put another coat on that area. Good luck on the garage that’s a big project.

I have a project I'm going back to fix because Granite Grip is pealing up at the edges on a concrete patio. This was a raw concrete application. When I first applied Granite Grip..I had to call Behr because I kept getting streaking from rollers. They told me to rent a texture sprayer. They did reimburse me for the rental and 12 gallons of extra product. However..fast forward to 11 months later and I am going to the same project to scrape up the edges and I have to re-spray! I'm not a happy camper about this

I wonder if I could paint a wood floor with this paint!?
@donkeypart9158
@donkeypart9158 4 жыл бұрын
I would have put a blocking primer on the bottom edge of the wall, then done some touch up white to cover the slopped paint from the previous diy'er, bringing the wall edge onto the floor, then created a false line - so that none of the floor color went up onto the wall or got jammed into the texture or cracks where they meet. That way, when you want to change the floor color, you don't have to keep climbing up the wall more and more just to cover the last. Summarized: where two surfaces meet, stop BEFORE the edge so that it doesn't look like you were going to paint the other, but stopped Just make it a straight line.. try it next time Peace.

I wonder if you were to use a less expensive base coat/sealer of a similar color to even everything out to start off with.. then use the Behr grit stuff as a final coat. I know back in the day when I painted cars, whenever we used meta-flake or candy colors we'd always start off with an even base-coat making it easier to cover the final desired effect/colors..

Thank you for this video. I want to do this to my brushed concrete patio. We had color tinting adding to it when it was poured and it looks awful because it is so uneven and dirty looking:( So the the concrete guy stained it and it barely lasted a year. I'm trying hard to remove the leftover stain, in some areas it comes off easy with a power washing but in some it is very stubborn. Now I'm trying paint stripper. If I've tried paint stripper and then power washed again and there is still some leftover color, how concerned do I need to be? Will the granite grip last? I'm really trying to avoid using a concrete sander.

@TheShackHome 7 жыл бұрын
JWJ it's Behr Premium Floor Coating. The sand or grit is premixed in the paint. You could most definitely use this in your basement. As i stated preparation is key. make very sure it is clean and completely dry before you apply this. Also it is around $50 a gallon so a basement depending on how much your square footage is this could be costly. You don't want this to go to waist if not applied properly. Thank you for the compliment. Thank you for viewing

What would you recommend to fill the cracks and then use the Granite Grip? Looks nice.

How do you prep when it's been previously painted and you want to repaint? I've scraped all the loose stuff off but should I be scraping right down to the cement?
@TheShackHome
@TheShackHome 4 жыл бұрын
Sandy Marion personally I'd scrape it real good give it a once over with some pool acid. NOTE: if not comfortable using this DON'T. It can burn and cause real problems if inhaled. Just saying this is what I would do. I have experience with it and at one time transported hazardous chemicals so I had proper training, Just make sure it is clean and ALL loose material removed. Should be fine. This porch was somewhat painted fortunately it wasn't painted with very good paint.

Best way is to rent a Concrete Scarifying Machine. Especially when you have to remove old, flaky paint. If it's just bare concrete, it's even easier. Forget the acid. Acid washes cannot possibly rough up the surface as well as a scarifying machine.

Was the paint in your can, and when you applied it look really blue? It looks like yours dried to the gray as promised, I'm having trouble with getting past the initial blue color of the paint in the can.
@TheShackHome
@TheShackHome 8 жыл бұрын
Before I applied the coating I mixed the coating with a 5" double paddle joint compound mixer, I attached to my drill, to thoroughly mix the coating. When I was applying the coating to the edges in this video you can see it was gray but may had a blue hue to it, I think due to the granules in the mix. But never did look blue at all. The store you purchased it from should've mixed it for you or at least shook it I would have them open it up to make sure that it is the correct color if you can I would return it maybe it's just a bad batch. I will say though I recently repainted my room in my house, little man cave, and during certain times of the day the walls are a light gray but they do take on a blue hue. It could be just because of the gray itself but really should not look blue. Thank you for viewing. Sorry I can't help more.

Question for you... if I just barely poured new concrete (tall curbing) would there need to be any etching, preparation, etc? The concrete now is like a week or so old. I would love to just roll this stuff on to make it pop a bit more.
@TheShackHome
@TheShackHome 8 жыл бұрын
Thank you for viewing Michael great question. Personally I would let that thing dry for 30 days makeing sure it cures completely just because you just never know. I always use acid on the driveway just because they're not new and you want to make sure it's very clean from the oils and rubber from the tires. aftertime rubbing and walking on it naturally natural smooths the surface. Personally I would do the extra step mix a 50-50 batch just to guarantee a good surface for the flooring to adhere to but not necessary it's just something I personally would do I rather spend a couple extra hours and dollars for a better outcome and longevity. I would recommend waiting let that thing dry for a good two more weeks then go gung ho

What else can you use to clean and etch the concrete? I have vinyl siding right next to the concrete step and the muriatic acid will destroy that vinyl.
@TheShackHome
@TheShackHome 3 жыл бұрын
earl0520 I have 2 suggestions either Zep or Super Clean. Both work well as degreasers. Use them full strength do not dilute them scrub the concrete, you just want to make sure it is clean, no oil at all rinse with a pressure washer if possible help get in the pores and wash away any oil residue. You should be fine. Super Clean is in a purple bottle you can find it at an auto parts store and Home Depot. Zep will be an orangeish color, it’s the citrus that breaks down the oil, I get that trough Home Depot. Both 1 gal containers and are full strength.

John Lazzari sorry it was my rental. I did it because the porch as slippery when it got wet and this has grit in it so it was a must for the safety for my tenants. Being close to the beach just a little moisture and you could slip and fall. sorry don't know what I'd charge

I love the video, But being a widow at 60 I am trying to fix things on my own could I use this on my garage floor ?
@TheShackHome
@TheShackHome 4 жыл бұрын
Dorothy Moos Thank you. I wouldn't recommend this for a garage floor. Mainly due to the grit in it. Having a car tire roll over this could cause rubber marks all over the floor. A good epoxy resin is the best for a garage floor. Garage should be a smooth surface. If that is a bit pricey they have many good paints on the market if your just looking to clean it up. Thanks for viewing.

how does this product stand up to shoveling in the winter. here in Canada, most home depot decorative coatings don't last long unless you use a primer, then a waterproof varnish over final finish. microcements are amazing, and you can create any design you want. but that's another episode. but you got the technique down brother. check out isomat microcement deco finish and deco flex. very strong and easy to apply. available in Europe and Canada only. oh crap sales pitch!! hahaha.
