Great video. I've just started a Primaris Fists army, to support their smaller yellow brethren. I use a different base approach - army painter demonic yellow in a spray can to get a nice flat base; if you apply a few light coats it eventually builds up to a stronger yellow colour, but I think I will try your shading/highlighting approach (with a few variations as I use game color/vallejo etc in places). I also really liked your guides on eyes and faces for Marines as well. Keep up the great work.

Depends on a few things - check my video on paint thinning - might help a little Outside of that I find a wet palette really helps, and making sure the brush doesn't habe too much paint on it - as even if it's super thin too much paint will flood an area

Excellent explanation and a super clean result, congratulations sir! By the by, Dorn Yellow is still in production, it's just under the layer paints now since GW got rid of the "edge" branding. I've wanted to do an Imperial Fists army for a long time, but I've always struggled with yellow. So my "quarantine project" has been trying various techniques but I never quite got the effect I wanted. Your video has been the breakthrough I needed. Especially the part about using contrast paints for recess shading. Washes always ruined the tone I wanted, and I had to choose between something too dark and dull like Agrax, or too weak like Reikland or Sepia. Guilliman Flesh is perfect, flows nicely but stays where you put it, and it's fairly easy to tidy up the occasional Oops. I love how you've been able to acheive a warm, golden yellow without being too dark and brown, or too lemony and bright. THESE are the Fists I've always wanted to play! And you've shown it can be done without an airbrush (I simply don't have the room for one, as my painting desk is my work-from-home desk during the day). I've got three test models done and now I'm confident that I can start on an army. Thanks!

Hi. First up, great vid -thanks very much! I'm painting up a test Imperial Fist following this approach, but wondering if I'd have better luck swapping the Yriel Yellow and Guilliman Flesh panel lining step. I'm having trouble doing a clean Yriel coat that doesn't muck up the panel line detail work. What would you say to building up a clean layer of Yriel first and then going and panel lining? Also trying out a Tamiya enamel wash instead of gulliman flesh and reckon that'd be very easy for cleanup. thoughts?
@ThePaintingCoach3 жыл бұрын
You can do that - the reason I did Averland first was because it is easier to clean any mistakes - you can definitely go straight to yriel yellow however, especially over a bone colour base I'm not a fan of the enamel wash - I actually prefer an oil wash as cleanup is a bit easier
@inf32433 жыл бұрын
Interesting! Haha yeah I think doing Yriel after panel lining on whole squad at once might drive me batty, so I'll try swapping em around. Wish me luck! @@ThePaintingCoach haha well I've learned that covering up mistakes with Yriel is not something I wanna do too much of! Think the workflow that's gonna work for me is : - prime, then base in averland sunset - block out any other colours: black rubber, metallics, red chest eagle, trim - clean up any mistakes with averland - yriel yellow over all the armour, being careful not to hit the other colours - gloss varnish, then panel line wash (either enamel or oils) - clean up, then matte varnish - highlighting with flash gitz & dorn, then everything else.

@the painting coach, If I do the base coat in averland sunset with airbrush, would I need to gave a wash down coat out of pot to make sure it’s same colour to tidy up mistakes ?
@ThePaintingCoach4 жыл бұрын
Hi Michael - 100% depends on how good the Averland base coat is - theough an airbrush I imagine it would be pretty good - I also recommend dojng the Yriel Yellow stage through and airbrush if you have it, then shading - hope that helps!
@michaeldorn53304 жыл бұрын
The Painting Coach what I was thinking of doing. Was undercoat with wraithbone with air brush. Than base coast with airbrush, I never thought of yriel yellow true airbrush! It’s my first time ever using a airbrush I have a Iwata go-cs 3.5 needle
@ThePaintingCoach4 жыл бұрын
Cool - i think I'd use the airbrush for as much as possible - especially if you are painting a whole army! Just shimmy the steps around a bit - and make sure you prime it first - wraithbone from the pot isn't a primer, whereas the can of spray is

Thanks again, you have any other hints/tips or other things I need it would be greatly appreciated.

Hi there. I was looking for some advice, in your video I see you made the edges of the shoulder pads black. But I have seen others using red for imperial fists as well. Does the colour make any difference?

Thanks for the comment! The only real difference is from a lore amd aesthetic point of view. The shoulder pad trim denotes company: White/silver: 1st company veterans Yellow/Gold: 2nd company Red: 3rd Company Green: 4th Company Black: 5th Company Orange: 6th Company (Reserves) Purple: 7th Company (Reserves) Grey: 8th Company (Reserves) Blue: 9th Company (Reserves) No colour: 10th Company So it really depends which you prefer :)

How much would it cost to make a small army of imperial fists because I'm thinking if getting into playing warhammer
@ThePaintingCoach4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment! I guess it depends where you are in the world and how big an army you want to make - i guess for 25 power level which i think is the new norm for starting a Crusade ready army, you'd be looking at some troop choices, an HQ etc, so probably in the region £100 - £150 for the models and also maybe another £50 - £100 for paint That covers a Primaris Captain, Primaris Librarian, 2 x 5 Intercessor Squads and an Aggressor squad - but that's just one option among many!
