Ive had art block really bad for the last year. Im a caregiver for my mom. I adore your videos. Ive been subbed since Sandi had just 7 thousand subs. I rewatch videos all the time. Im trying to get back into art 🎨. Im trying to paint/draw like Sandi. I have PTSD among other things. Its hard to let go of the perfectionism and not knowing what to paint. As part of my therapy, my therapist and I will have "art appointments" sometimes. Im slowly getting back into it. Thank you Sandi for all your hard work on these videos cause they are a comfort to me and motivation to try harder! ❤

I do a few paintings every year for an animal rescue that has an auction where artists create paintings of some of the dogs or cats rescued. (My three paintings sold for $1300) Other than that I lack motivation. BUT, after watching you, and taking you class showing how you organize, etc. your paints I am starting to create again. Being loose has been my problem for a long time. I have started drawing with my left hand...I am right handed. It has made a huge difference. It forces me to slow down. Also, your suggestion to hold ones paintbrush at the end...WOW! I did two drawing of you while watching your videos. You're a great model. LOL

Sandi , love the key analogy ! May I add to it by saying : you are a maestro with your paintbrush ! The way you dip in and out of those pots is magic to watch . Grazie !

Girl. You have transcended. This video suggests such a leap forward in your reach as an artist and as a teacher. I'm blown away by these two paintings and the depth of mood and emotion (even pathos) they convey. Your landscapes and still lifes are one thing, but these portraits (all of your animal and human-based art, really) are where you truly TRULY shine. Gorgeous.

Hi Sandi, I just thought I would chime in with a story from University. My painting instructor was talking about using black in a landscape , he remarked that in a print (woodblock or linoleum), where all the blacks are black it works, but where there is color in a print, the shadows do not have to appear as if they are ' a piece of black velvet is rolled out along the ground', and that a painting should have a variety of color within the shadows.😊 This is a very inspiring warm up! I am looking forward to the 'whites', thanks again!

I like to use Prussian blue for my shadows and I add burnt umber if i want it darker. I use it transparent so the item colour mixes with it. These are some beautiful colours. the teals are gorgeous. it is always surprising to see what colours can make teal.

Thanks for sharing your knowledge and wisdom, Sandy! Beautiful dark examples! And I so enjoyed your darker painting examples on this video. I have followed you for a few years now. You inspire me to paint more loosely. Although at this moment, I still paint tight. lol. I will get there eventually. 🤞🏼

Sienna + Thalo = yumminess! Last year for Christmas I received a set of Daler Rowney fluorescent acrylic inks. Since the nature of fluorescent paints is transparent, I decided to have fun & mix them with blacks. So much fun, but I will keep working with different ratios. And now I also want to break out my Turners & continue with experimenting. Great vid Sandi🩷

I love mixing dark darks. Just recently I did a painting with a giant brooding night sky. The lower part of the sky needed to be super dark with the upper part of the sky being nearly as dark but with a bit more luminosity. I used a dark mixed with a purple base for the lower part and an indigo base for the upper part. The difference is subtle, but there is a definite difference in the luminosity that makes the sky more lively than if I'd just used either of the darks in isolation. Lovely video, I really enjoyed it.

Do you follow any order of value when you paint... like blocking in value masses, and then paint from darks to lights? (like common with oils and pastels) My impression is you start with a response to objects, and then use value, mark making, and color to emphasize contrast and patterns. But I'm just guessing.

This is so helpful to watch.Maybe you said this and I missed it (apologies if that is the case) - I am curious why you say the black should be "not a bluey black"? I follow another artist who only has a Paynes gray instead of black on her palette and I have been trying that on for few months but I already have an ivory black and a lamp black and am ready to bring it back to my palette. I would love to know what makes you recommend pure black over bluey black?
