A great way to get a more vivid and natural result is the following - one thin coat of a nice brown, for example a mix of dryad bark and mournfang brown, just so that you can see the black undercoat shine through. Let it dry - Drybrush with the same brown - Add a good amount of screaming skull to the remaining brown color, getting a creamy type colour. Drybrush everything, especially the raised areas and edges - Repeat this with only screaming skull - Drybrush with white scar for the final highlights on the raised areas and the bricks as done at 09:44

As well, I would really like to see a video about your approach to drybrushing and stippling, most videos just tell you to keep things as dry as possible and then you end up with a dusty powdery look, whereas you wet the brush and keep things looking smooth and buttery. Hey dude, great question! You have a few options: Do this and weather per layer (popular with SF airbrushing terrain, looks cool, but a bit unrealistic) Do this way more gradually top to bottom Do gradually, but also do things like dark towards recesses, e.g. either side of pillars, etc, providing variation in more than one way, looks fairly realistic. #3 is my fav, not too hard, looks great, you can also add weathering, which I am a real fan of.

Are there any good options for stone mottled with various colors interspersed? Seems like most examples come across go very wet using a bunch of washes. Also are there any adaptations in technique suggested for working with much larger terrain pieces? Also any magic/tech portal effects would be great to see.
@ArtisOpus4 жыл бұрын
100%, washes is an efficient way to do it, but if you want to avoid them you can do it by mottling a couple of mid-tones, with the same base and highlight you'll get variation but also coherency! If you're going bigger it just takes a bit longer :) perhaps airbrush or use another brush for the base-coating to save your XL some mileage!

Dark blue-greys at the start and then mix a faint amount of light blue with your whites (like baharroth blue)? Or you reckon this method but a final light blue glaze would get the same effect?
@ArtisOpus4 жыл бұрын
Great question dude, I think there's a couple of approaches: 1.) Exactly the same, drop some blue ink in each 2.) (Interesting one) Deep blue base (incubi darkness/Deep Blue), then normal, but then highlight with a light blue white

If I recall correctly, the texture palette is mdf, or similar, so washing wouldn't be an option, but it's not too likely to get slicked with paint, given how it's used... But replacement, should it be needed, should be inexpensive.
@ArtisOpus4 жыл бұрын
Rather than washing I just re-prime black :) (this is great, as you can test if your colours cover over black well on it, if they don't... you find ones that do ;)). I tend to use 'fresh' ones because they screw with recording less, however I prefer a heavily used/primed one, myself.
@ArtisOpus4 жыл бұрын
Yeah it's MDF, if you go super heavy then you can purchase a replacement (to keep the 'sharp edges' on the design for testing for miniatures, however there is a useful beauty when you really build up a load of different colours and textures. You get the ability for accidental learning then, when you put your wash over last week's metallic drybrush testing, and discover something amazing :)
