Use ing playing cards or something similar around the rim works well, it’s much easier then using tape on a round surface. After you use the cards then you can use tape to hold the bag on. A can of flat black paint is good for over spray. Preparation makes the results last for a long time.

I just refurbished four Infiniti 17" alloy wheels, using the methods outlined in this video. I am happy with the color and the overall look of the wheels but the finish is not smooth. It is somewhat gritty despite wet-sanding the wheels with 220, 320, 600, and finally 1,000 grit sandpaper. Did I spray the clear paint too lightly ? Would a thicker coat dry to a smoother finish ? If not, is there a way to polish the grit away ? And yes, I cleaned the wheels thoroughly between every coat of paint, colored or clear so the grit is not airborne debris. Any advice is appreciated.
