I love the technique with the oil paints. I want to do that with entire armies. Right now I use that style as a filter of sorts, it's quite satisfying to paint that way for some reason. I love just taking a small dab of paint and being able to work with it for so long on the model!

Just discovered the channel. Really enjoyed several videos that have given me some great ideas, but I have to say one of my favorite things about them is how often you show the figures before and after each step. A lot of washes and highlights are quite subtle on their own, so seeing exactly the difference each step makes is really cool and very educational for an inexperienced painter like me. Super helpful and not as common as it should be.

Seeing a lot of people using oils over the last few years I happened to mention it to my Dad, and then he went off and dug out all his old oil paints, probably older than me! So I used a few on a model, really liked painting with them, but they never seemed to dry? I didn't wick them on cardboard, as I didn't know about that at the time but how long should you leave oil paints for and expect them to be dry, a day, several days? It was a disappointing foray into using oils that they just stayed wet and smeared around. Should I have vanished them between stages? Even though I've collected models for nigh on thirty years, my painting hasn't much progressed beyond basic Citadel style tabletop quality, hence watching videos like this to improve.

Hmm, I don't know what's in your oil paints, but I presume the oil used in them would play a huge role in how long it takes for them to dry. My oils have linseed oil and possibly some other additives in them that makes them dry overnight on a canvas, but a few days if it's on a miniature, but they tend to be fairly easy to work with otherwise. If you want to "thin" your oil down to something more like acrylic and washes, try mineral spirits. They will also make your oil paints matte afaik. Varnishing before they actually dry feels like it will lead to a disaster though... 😅
