Very easy to follow and very informative, thanks! One observation from me, it seems like shading the white with the various greys is time consuming. Do you feel like this recipe for painting white is fairly quick or would you suggest a different method to paint many models quickly?
@BrushstrokePaintingGuides
@BrushstrokePaintingGuides Жыл бұрын
@@shimomurai So, I've found this is the least frustrating way I've found to get a silky smooth white. Other approaches may be quicker but they always end up having to compromise the end result. That said, if you have an airbrush you can increase the speed of this by priming white, base coating it all in celestra grey and then zenithal with ulthuan grey. Then you can just do the recess shades of dawnstone and eshin and finish with the highlight of white thats my batch method for armies and believe me, you can get damn quick at doing that. And it still looks amazing at the end :D

Any thoughts how you would modify thus for epic scale white scars? I'm thinking prime vallejo white primer, base coat ulthuan grey... then maybe 1-2 recess shades pure white highlight?? Epic painters advise maximise contrast so I guess shadows more darker greys. I was originally gonna try the white contrast or a thinned grey or black wash bur do you find the thinned paint easier to control for shade?

White is always challenge. It's not quite as unforgiving as yellow in my experience, but it comes with a whole different challenge: it can look like a light grey instead. Using greys to shade the recesses instead of a wash or contrast is a cool trick. It's essentially the old way of doing things as I understand it. Apparently the 'Eavy Metal painters used to thin down black for panel lining before Nuln Oil became a thing. Personally I've always had a lot of success with Corax and Apothecary White. Although, Corax needs a little dash of Lahmian Medium to work its magic.

New subscriber and fascinated with you videos. Your techniques always achieve such amazing results. They are new to me as I am reentering the hobby after a long sabbatical and I have to rebuild my skills while getting used to the extreme evolution of material and kit variety. I had been building 1/72 and 1/48 scale aircraft priming and painting with airbrush. You mention priming in black, I do see people using that but have not tried it. I do have one bronze statue ( with very strong detail), I will attempt shortly, have you or any of your subscriber's done a total bronze look? In the interim I am going to follow your recommendations on priming specific areas based on final color

This is also another easy to follow tutorial it does have I think a few extra steps as compared to the yellow one, which is understandable with a colour like white your essentially working with shades and values and not hues. And I do see what you mean by the camera playing tricks, but I think if seen in person the mind sort of blurs the lines and sells the illusion of white in the end after seeing the pure white edge highlights. Instead of registering it as grey so I think that's essentially the lesson here with white, is that you are really selling the illusion of white not white itself. ❤

I think two things were super good in this video those tips at the very start the "Painting white rules", Why make your life harder! Too true, and at 3:25 where you talk about you changing some of the levels with the picture to make things work better, your super honest with the audience, and telling them why you did something. I really like this as a guide but still think I hate painting white, but I am surprised that ulthanwan grey is the midtone its already super bright

The first guide I ever used to learn white was from a lotr warhammer magazine in like 2005ish that suggested using a black primer on Gandalf the White and Saruman. 2 Saruman and 4 Gandalf's later I realised it'd be easier if I just didn't prime it black and how to use greys to layer because the rest of the guide was literally 'just slap on white' and no other steps and had more detail in how to paint the beard than the white which ended up being more of a cream colour thanks to the black base. Had to learn the hard way and I gave up on guides back then because of it. Guides like this hopefully help new starters learn much better and us old guard refresh or update our techniques. I just try not to paint white tbh, but sometimes you need a lot of white

@@BrushstrokePaintingGuides thank you! For some reason whenever I paint white, it's hard for me to get it smooth, and it always gets chalky even with me thinning it and try all sorts of things. Is this because the pigment?
@BrushstrokePaintingGuides
@BrushstrokePaintingGuides 4 ай бұрын
@@user-tm1zn9wy6c generally speaking yes. The pigment for white at a molecular level is chunky and as a result when it’s made into a paste it wants to clump up. I’m no chemist, but that’s my crude understanding. Now, some newer paints have crazy other ingredients to help combat that and the Two Thin Coats one is the best I’ve found so far. Another alternative is to go with a white ink. This is great if you’re wanting to do glowing runes and want a pure white in grooves. Ink isn’t good at layering like a paint though, but good at edge highlights So hope that helps a bit more

What I find difficult is shading loose clothing without getting odd hard edges. Something you don't have to worry about in this video. I use washes and drybrushing , but this can lead to rough textures.
@BrushstrokePaintingGuides
@BrushstrokePaintingGuides 2 ай бұрын
OK, so the colours used for painting white clothing is the same but you're right the application is different. You still start from your midtone colour and then you add the grey into the bottom of the folds. Then you have to create a transition or blend up the sides of the fold from your grey up to your midtone. This is done by adding thin layers of increasingly brighter / lighter paint. I generally will add the lighter colour I'm wanting to get to, to the darker colour I'm moving from, in increasingly larger amounts until it is the same as the end colour. By which I mean paint your grey into the bottom of the fold, then for the next layer add a small amount of the midtone colour into your grey to make a slightly lighter colour. Add a thin layer of that leaving some of the grey still showing at the bottom. Next layer, add a little more midtone into your grey mix and apply a thin layer but leave some of the two previous layers showing. And so on. Then for the highlights it's the same process but in reverse. You start with the midtone and add increasingly larger amounts of your highlight colour and work from the middle of the fold up to the top. Now, you can make things easier on yourself and instead of having to mix custom shades each time you can use ready mixed colours instead, as most companies already make gradients of colours for this purpose and when you add them as thin layers they make a decent transition without the need for the mixing. For white cloaks these colours work well for the steps facebook.com/brushstroke.painter/photos/pb.100044188281721.-2207520000/2053593954881858/?type=3 I'm planning on making a fundamentals video on painting transitions and blending, so I'll be sure to include white in that as an example Hope this helps in the meantime

I do have a question regarding volumes. I want to try learning how to paint with volumes. Ive bascially got red sorted, but with white. Would you use the same colours you used in this video? White and black are basically the bane of me as its hard to paint them with volumes but also make it so they still register as white and black. And not grey
@BrushstrokePaintingGuides
@BrushstrokePaintingGuides Жыл бұрын
OK, for volume painting the short answer is, yes. Use the same colours listed here for white. Longer answer However, as you will have found with painting red, the key for volume painting, is the transitions between those colours in order to form smooth blends. In this video, I opted for the "easier" approach of harsher shadows. For the volumes, you're going to need to introduce intermediate steps between each colour. So, rather than jumping from one colour to the next, you'll mix a small amount of the next colour into the one you're currently using and apply that, then a bit more and repeat. So you soften the visible steps between the colours. I should probably do a video on volumes, as it's easier to show than write I hope this gives you the gist though?

Have you watched my paint thinning video? That’s the consistency I use. Or, if you’re really struggling you could brush on with the air brush version of Ulthuan grey rb.gy/32hti

@@BrushstrokePaintingGuides Thank you for the advice and i will make sure to use it. I think i may have found my issue tho. I never knew i had to mix the bottle for longer than around 20 sec. But if i find no luck ill makes sure to skip the hassle and buy the air version. One more question tho, I have a Redgrassgames wet palette so i'm not sure if you know what i speak of but does a sheet have a time before it is unusable? By that i mean, can sheets become damp for so long that they become faulty? if so, that might be another contestant in my issues.

@@Itz2Cat ah yeah, Ulthuan does need a good shake, as most greys and whites do, to make sure that pigment is fully mixed. Otherwise you’ll basically just be painting with a pale medium. In terms of the Redgrass palette, I’m really sorry I don’t know. I don’t have one and I’ve never tried one. However, I’m sure someone else on here may be able to help you?

My go to is Vallejo surface primer but I use that through an airbrush. Rattle can wise, I used to get good results from motorcar brands of plastic primer. Specifically, here in the UK a brand called Halfords did a lovely white spray. Cheap too

I was curious but it became obvious that you were not doing white but grey. Back in the 90's I did an Apothecary, metal using the original Citadel paints. The ones in the taller straight pots that you see Cote D' Arms use now. It was a metal miniature which I primed black, then painted three layers of white. The result is a paint job that still has not worn through and makes the Apothecary bright and shiny on the battle field. The marine that is the beacon for the continuation of the Marine Gene Seed. So no, I don't think grey with white trim is a good white. It is grey. But personal taste and aesthetic applies because this is everyone's hobby. Just saying

Hey, thanks for commenting. I get what you’re saying but the problem with painting something pure white is it is then impossible to highlight it and that’s not how real white objects look. If you look at a large object which is white, it is not pure white all over. It is in fact a series of different grey tones as shadows from the light bouncing off it effect its surface and only the tiniest highlights on it are pure white. So, in order to paint a true scale representation of a “white” surface we actually have to paint in tones of grey and our brain then interprets it as being a white object because that’s how real white objects look to us. All that said, at the end of the day, if you get results you like then that is all that matters. Your hobby, you do you. Thanks for watching 👍

Thank you Yeah, I do try and make the effort to show how good results can be achieved WITHOUT an airbrushing. My thoughts being the recipes can easily be applied by airbrush too, if people have them. But a sign of a good recipe is one which doesn't need one Thanks for watching :)

@@BrushstrokePaintingGuides All sarcasm aside, they're great tools. I just don't have a proper space in my home to set up and use one conveniently. So it's much appreciated whenever I find a video about something that's hard to do with a brush that doesn't just boil down to "don't use a brush." See also all those "How to get two hive tyrants out of one box!" videos that boil down to "3D print most of a second hive tyrant"

@BrushstrokePaintingGuides

I think the main problem is just that people start with pure white and then have nowhere to highlight up to. That and the fact they probably start with GW’s whites and they just don’t work.
