Sanding tip : You may want to use a lower grit such as 100,180 or 220. You need to really rough up the chrome finish so it is dull before paint. The paint I chose does not require a primer or adhesion promotor, but using some could be best!

@Donslife Today while at our local GMC dealership, the service manager recommended a tent shop that they send their vehicles to for PPF (this local dealership is doing a courtesy delivery, we ordered our truck from a dealership in TN delivered to CA...anyway) the owner of this tent shop recommended the powder coating when I mentioned that we'd like to black out the chrome. 👍✨️

So how’s the paint? Is it still holding up after this long? Love your vids btw. I have a black sierra AT4 and it definitely needs some more blackening in places but I like the splash of red here and there. Not sure what to do with the badges as blacking them out may be too much.
@Donslife Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the support! I can’t say for sure how they held up since I replaced the exhaust and tips with a Borla system. If I did it again on the cheap and couldn’t get them powder coated, I would just use HyperDip or PlastiDip. They shrouds don’t seem to get to hot.

New AT4 on order. May have to try painting after running these through a media blaster
@Donslife2 жыл бұрын
Mine held up and since then I have installed a new exhaust and tips. Media blasting and a primer would be better for the long haul. Honestly if I did it again, I would just use Hyperdip. They don’t get nearly as hot as I thought they would and some people have tried it and told me it works great. No blasting, sanding or scuffing.
@4961Studebaker2 жыл бұрын
@@Donslife thanks for that tip. That sounds easier. I haven’t checked GM parts yet but they did offer the black “HDMI port” tips with the carbon pro package- not sure if they sell as a stand alone item. But hyper dip sounds like a great option

Hey Don. Love the video. Where did you buy the Tremclad ?
@Donslife Жыл бұрын
Canadian Tire 😂 For the record, more sanding with a heavier grit is the best prep if you decide to paint. Otherwise a sandblaster and powder coating will last longer but cost more

Why did you chose not to use primer and clearcoat? I was getting ready to paint my attached tailpipes gloss black and wanted to do it in a way that doesn't result in future cracking/peeling.

The paint I used had a built in primer. I would still recommend a primer but you might want a high heat version. Powder coating will be better but more costly

Hey Donslife I did the same as what you did for painting my tips on my 2020 gmc. But after 2 weeks it is starting to peel off I used and done everything you did. Would you know my issue? Any info would be great please. Also I been learning some stuff from you. Great work.
@Donslife3 жыл бұрын
Sorry to hear Jade. Usually paint adhesion issues are from the following: Surface has insufficient surface tension: sand more, try using a 180 or 220 first. A wire brush drill tip can scratch up the surface well too. For any major scratches use a 320 or 400 grit to clean them up so they don’t show through the primer. Second issue could be the primer isn’t working well on bare metal. A DTM (direct to metal) primer or and etching primer should work. Also too much humidity will inhibit the paint from coalescing or bonding with strength. Light coats with the primer first is critical in many cases. If you only have some spots peeling, you can probably sand down or wire brush those then, prime those spots, lightly and all of it, wipe it clean and give it all some new top coats.
@JB-TM-20233 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the info I used the tremclad paint high heat.mind you I waited 5 minutes between coats maybe that wasn't enough? With that paint I probably don't need primer right? Also start with a light coat?
@Donslife3 жыл бұрын
If you are using the same paint, you shouldn’t need a primer. Maybe sand deeper, it certainly won’t hurt. Pay most attention to where the first peeling occurred. Apply some ‘tack’ coats with more dry time in between maybe. You could do a primer still. Might be better for long term. I have my new exhaust coming soon that will eliminate the factory tips, so I probably won’t know if they will last years with that paint.

Did the same on my exhaust pipes and paint peeled of in next day, do you think that paint is good for such temperature?
@Donslife3 жыл бұрын
Mine is still holding on. Humidity while painting can play a part in the curing. Honestly since the tips aren’t part of the exhaust, mine don’t seem to get too warm. Based on that, I would probably do the following for a better result: Sand with 180, scratch them up more. A wire brush drill tip can do wonders too. Use a direct to metal primer. Use a paint of your choice for automotive applications. Rustoleum, Tremclad, etc. Depending where you live different brands are available.
