Lots of sign painters say hold the brush in the middle or the end of the handle. You hold it like a pencil the way I’m always told not to. It shows do what you are comfortable with, you have great brush control. Thanks for the video. I’m still learning and always appreciate people like you!

My dad and grandfather used to paint signs years ago. I loved just sitting there watching them paint. My grandfather actually also got into craving wood and sign foam.

I'm on the Big Island and being 84 I love the art work and still striping, did very little sign work. I use to use One Shot and sign painters paints that are hard to find here. The art supply store here has a good supply.

@@maxkilbourne3142 I'm looking at a set of brushes I know cheap brushes can be a nightmare. What's your opinion on the Mack/Tidwell monster stix 6 brush set?
@maxkilbourne31423 жыл бұрын
David! Okay, I looked at those brushes. And I will say this: they are very short. The whole concept behind longer, softer hairs in a brush is, the length allows the artist to pull longer, smoother strokes, much easier than with shorter hair brushes. And it all completely depends on what you will be painting! For Me, I rarely ever use short hair brushes unless I am doing acrylic on canvas. I'm sure they are great brushes, I just wouldn't be able to use them in my sign painting stuff. What are you planning on painting?
@davidbruski6373 жыл бұрын
@@maxkilbourne3142 I am painting a red exit only sign with white letters. I appreciate your advice on the brushes and I believe your advice to be spot on. I'm on my third attempt and I do believe the length of the bristles have been keeping me from getting that smooth finish.
@tr71983 жыл бұрын
What paint treatment do you recommend for greater drag control on the brush? The more drag the easier to lay down the letter. If the paint is to fluid with no drag it tends to slide. I always painted letters using a mall stick. As the surface inclined at an upright 85 degree angle not flat. Do you find it easier flat. I draw flat as well.

Are all 3 jars filled with the same thing? Mineral spirits?
@maxkilbourne31427 ай бұрын
Yes, mineral spirits. Sometimes I will use something stronger if a brush has sat for a long time and stiffened up.

When I use acrylic on canvas, I find the strokes don’t carry even 50% as much as yours are on metal. Even then if I used any old acrylic on metal I bet it wouldn’t carry and I’d have to refill my brush constantly, running out halfway through a line etc. So is it the paint thinner that is allowing your paint to stay loaded in the brush for so many repeated strokes? I’m blown away by how effortless and long your strokes can be. I still feel lost on how to create that consistently with any colour of acrylic on canvas…wondering if you have advice? Anything helps thanks!
@maxkilbourne31422 жыл бұрын
I do not have any advice. I don't letter on canvas with acrylics. I also don't use acrylics on metal. So I am afraid I can't help at all. The reason My strokes seem so nice is because I am painting with enamels on metal.
@Gabriel-mb8ks2 жыл бұрын
@@maxkilbourne3142 understood. You would be able to achieve the same quality of line on wood as long as its smooth and you use enamels? The key is enamels + smooth surface?
@craigr4 ай бұрын
Recently got back into learning this. Try using the supplies Max listed in part one, you'll LOVE it. I've used house paint, artists acrylics, and sign writing enamel on a variety of surfaces. After you're frustrated using short brushes and cheap paints on rough surfaces, spend the money on the right tools for the job and you'll feel like a much better painter!! Long haired brushes hold more paint and the length of bristle touching the surface helps with smoother strokes. Sign writing or pinstriping paint thinned properly flows out great and covers with one stroke.

Where do you find the fonts to use? One painter said I should use the classics. Okay, what's that. Lol. Clearly a novice here. Thanks
@maxkilbourne31426 ай бұрын
That depends on what font you want to use!! Try typing in classic sign painting fonts. There are some sugn painting font on signs that you can't find anywhere! Some guys make stuff up. Check out a website called Letterheads. And, Sign Craft magazine. And of course Facebook sign stuff. If you see a sign that you like, write the artist and ask what it is.
